CT colonography for longitudinal in-vivo assessment of colonic lengthening in middle-age and older adults.

BACKGROUND: Although a general trend for longer colons among older adults has been observed, longitudinal demonstration of intra-patient elongation is lacking. We assessed colonic length at serial CT colonography (CTC), which allows for precise length measurement over time. METHODS: Longitudinal CTC evaluation (mean time interval, 12.8 years; range, 11.6-16.6 years) in 100 asymptomatic adults (mean age, 54.2 years at index study; 50 men, 50 women) were analyzed using a dedicated software system (V3D Colon, Viatronix). Segmental and total colonic lengths were obtained at interactive 2D and 3D

Computed tomography texture features can discriminate benign from malignant lymphadenopathy in pediatric patients: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of benign from malignant lymphadenopathy remains challenging in pediatric radiology. Textural analysis (TA) quantitates heterogeneity of tissue signal intensities and has been applied to analysis of CT images. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish whether CT textural analysis of enlarged lymph nodes visualized on pediatric CT can distinguish benign from malignant lymphadenopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified enlarged lymph nodes measuring 10-20 mm on contrast-enhanced CTs of patients age 18 years and younger that had been ca

Texture analysis of the liver at MDCT for assessing hepatic fibrosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate CT texture analysis (CTTA) for staging of hepatic fibrosis (stages F0-F4) METHODS: Quantitative texture analysis (QTA) of the liver was performed on abdominal MDCT scans using commercially available software (TexRAD), which uses a filtration-histogram statistic-based technique. Single-slice ROI measurements of the total liver, Couinaud segments IV-VIII, and segments I-III were obtained. CTTA parameters were correlated against fibrosis stage (F0-F4), with biopsy performed within one year for all cases with intermediate fibrosis (F1-F3). RESULTS: The study cohort consisted

Optimal abdominal CT protocol for obese patients.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the impact of different protocols on radiation dose and image quality for obese patients undergoing abdominal CT examinations. METHODS: Five abdominal/pelvis CT protocols employed across three scanners from a single manufacturer in a single centre used a variety of parameters (kV: 100/120, reference mAs: 150/190/218/250/300, image reconstruction: filtered back projection (FBP)/iterative (IR)). The routine protocol employed 300 reference mAs and 120 kV. Data sets resulting from obese patient examinations (n = 42) were assessed for image quality using visua

A Segmentation Framework of Pulmonary Nodules in Lung CT Images.

Accurate segmentation of pulmonary nodules is a prerequisite for acceptable performance of computer-aided detection (CAD) system designed for diagnosis of lung cancer from lung CT images. Accurate segmentation helps to improve the quality of machine level features which could improve the performance of the CAD system. The well-circumscribed solid nodules can be segmented using thresholding, but segmentation becomes difficult for part-solid, non-solid, and solid nodules attached with pleura or vessels. We proposed a segmentation framework for all types of pulmonary nodules based on internal tex

Diagnostic approach to retromolar trigone cancer by multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions.

Neoplasms of retromolar trigone have important peculiarities due to their spatial relationships with the surrounding structures. Tumours that involve this area can extend to nearby muscles; adipose spaces; and other anatomic structures, such as the soft palate, the tonsillar fossa, the parapharyngeal space, and the floor of the mouth. In spite of a relatively quick diagnosis, the real extent of these tumours is typically underestimated at clinical examination. Our purpose was to propose a systematic approach to the use of multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions to evaluate normal retro

Pulsatility of an intracavernous aneurysm demonstrated by dynamic 320-detector row CTA at high temporal resolution.

Studying the flow dynamics of intracranial aneurysms and the associated pulsatility of the aneurysm wall may help to risk-stratify unruptured aneurysms. Currently, in-vivo methods that visualize aneurysm wall movement at high temporal resolution are not yet fully established. We describe a patient with an intracavernous aneurysm in whom the area of increased aneurysm pulsatility as demonstrated by high-temporal resolution CTA was identical to the area of aneurysm growth on follow-up. A 35-year-old man presented with headaches and a sixth nerve palsy. CT including dynamic CTA demonstrated a pul

Visualization of neonatal coronary arteries on multidetector row CT: ECG-gated versus non-ECG-gated technique.

BACKGROUND: Multidetector CT (MDCT) seems to be a promising tool for detection of neonatal coronary arteries, but whether the ECG-gated or non-ECG-gated technique should be used has not been established. OBJECTIVE: To compare the detection rate and image quality of neonatal coronary arteries on MDCT using ECG-gated and non-ECG-gated techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve neonates with complex congenital heart disease were included. The CT scan was acquired using an ECG-gated technique, and the most quiescent phase of the RR interval was selected to represent the ECG-gated images. The raw

Evaluating the Google CT Foundation model for central pulmonary embolism detection on computed tomography pulmonary angiograms.

Early detection of pulmonary embolism (PE) is critical for clinical outcomes, yet existing deep-learning models often fail to generalize across institutions. The recently released Google CT Foundation model, pre-trained on a large, diverse CT corpus, produces compact volumetric embeddings that may transfer to downstream tasks without fine-tuning. We evaluate a classification pipeline that pairs these frozen embeddings with three lightweight heads - Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF), and a stacking ensemble - for central PE detection, training on the public RSNA CTPA dataset and

A novel quantitative method for CT assessment of bronchiectasis using AI-based airway segmentation and upper limits of normal airway caliber.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis represents a growing global health burden. While computed tomography (CT) is essential for diagnosis, current criteria rely on broncho-arterial ratios and visual assessments, which are subject to inter-observer variability and can be confounded by pathological changes in arterial caliber. This study aimed to develop a novel quantitative method for assessing bronchiectasis by incorporating artificial intelligence-based airway segmentation and establishing location-specific upper limits of normal (ULN) for airway dimensions derived from healthy controls. METHODS: We an

FF Swin-Unet: a strategy for automated segmentation and severity scoring of NAFLD.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a significant risk factor for liver cancer and cardiovascular diseases, imposing substantial social and economic burdens. Computed tomography (CT) scans are crucial for diagnosing NAFLD and assessing its severity. However, current manual measurement techniques require considerable human effort and resources from radiologists, and there is a lack of standardized methods for classifying the severity of NAFLD in existing research. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose a novel method for NAFLD segmentation and automated severity

A Dual-Branch Framework With Prior Knowledge for Precise Segmentation of Lung Nodules in Challenging CT Scans.

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers globally, and early diagnosis is crucial for patient survival. Pulmonary nodules are the main manifestation of early lung cancer, usually assessed using CT scans. Nowadays, computer-aided diagnostic systems are widely used to assist physicians in disease diagnosis. The accurate segmentation of pulmonary nodules is affected by internal heterogeneity and external data factors. In order to overcome the segmentation challenges of subtle, mixed, adhesion-type, benign, and uncertain categories of nodules, a new mixed manual feature network that enhances se
