Induced auto-allergic lesions in the submandibular glands of rats were studied by immunofluorescence. Direct staining with a goat anti-rat IgG conjugate was negative. Indirect immunofluorescence revealed a high incidence of anti-salivary-duct antibodies in sera from both control and experimental groups. In individual rats, no relationship was found between the presence or absence of serum anti-salivary antibodies and the presence or absence of salivary auto-allergic lesions. We conclude that the antibodies demonstrated do not play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Studies of anaemia and tissue iron distribution were carried out in copper-deficient rats and pair-fed control animals given Fe orally or parenterally in varying doses. Cyclosporin (U.S.A.N. cyclosporine) was used prophylactically to suppress the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in BB Wistar rats. Morphine anesthesia is often recommended in patients with reduced cardiac reserve. As the effect of morphine on the balance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand is not well understood, the effect of large doses of morphine (3 mg/kg, subcutaneously) on experimental myocardial infarction size in the rat was evaluated. Administration of tyrosine, the amino acid precursor of catecholamines, increased blood pressure 38 to 49 percent in rats made acutely hypotensive by hemorrhage; other large neutral amino acids were ineffective. Tyrosine's effect was abolished by adrenalectomy, suggesting that, in hypotensive animals, it acts by accelerating the peripheral synthesis and release of catecholamines.
