In the past, the rat model of experimental vaginal candidosis has been used to study the efficacy of antifungal agents in eradicating acute vaginitis. In the present study, chronic vaginal candidosis was induced to study the natural history of the infection. A total of 48 rats were run in a black-white discrimination (original) learning task to the learning criterion of 18/20 correct responses. Correct responses were rewarded by food and a non-correction method was used. Bone robustness of the major limb bones of 2-year-old and 3-year-old male Sprague-Dawley rats was determined and compared to that of 3-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The results were compared to the published data on two different breeds of laboratory rats to ascertain if the laboratory rat is an appropriate animal model for the study of senile idiopathic osteoporosis in humans. The results show that the limb bone that becomes the most osteoporotic is the male Sprague-Dawley tibia. If one were selecting for the most appropriate breed of rat, it would be the Buffalo rat.

Experiments on Wistar rats were made to examine serotonin metabolism in experimental thyrotoxicosis. Correlation analysis demonstrated a direct relationship between the number of detectable serotonin-producing cells and serotonin content in the gastric mucosa at early times of hyperthyroidism and a reverse one at later times.

The right eyes of anesthetized, 10-week-old albino rats were exposed to constant photon fluxes at 6 wavelengths for 6 hrs. The effects of naloxone, pentobarbitone, or their combination, on arterial blood gases were studied in urethane-anaesthetised rats. Naloxone itself did not significantly alter the blood gases. Pentobarbitone significantly decreased PO2 and elevated PCO2, and these effects were prevented by pretreatment with naloxone. Arterial blood pH was unaffected by any of the drugs. The findings suggest that naloxone lacks a specific analeptic effect, but can antagonise respiratory depression induced by pentobarbitone.

The teratogenicity of D-penicillamine was studied using the Sprague-Dawley rat. Fetuses from rats fed diets containing 0.83% D-penicillamine during pregnancy had a high incidence of malformations. Maternal and fetal tissue copper levels were significantly lower in the D-penicillamine group than in controls, suggesting that the teratogenicity of the drug may be due in part to the induction of copper deficiency by its chelating properties.

Crude RNA preparations from uteri of oestradiol-treated rats induced the implantation of delayed blastocysts when injected into the parametrium of ovariectomized pregnant rats.
