Development and Application of Automated Vocal Fold Tracking Software in a Rat Surgical Model.

OBJECTIVE: The rat is a widely used model for studying vocal fold (VF) function after recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, but common techniques for evaluating rat VF motion remain subjective and imprecise. To address this, we developed a software package, called RatVocalTracker1.0 (RVT1.0), to quantify VF motion and tested it on rats with iatrogenic unilateral vocal fold paralysis (VFP). METHODS: A deep neural network was trained to identify the positions of the VFs and arytenoid cartilages (ACs) in transoral laryngoscope videos of the rat glottis. Software was developed to estimate glottic mid

Midazolam and isoflurane combination reduces late brain damage in the paraoxon-induced status epilepticus rat model.

Organophosphates (OPs) are widely used as pesticides and have been employed as warfare agents. OPs inhibit acetylcholinesterase, leading to over-stimulation of cholinergic synapses and can cause status epilepticus (SE). OPs poisoning can result in irreversible brain damage and death. Despite termination of SE, recurrent seizures and abnormal brain activity remain common sequelae often associated with long-term neural damage and cognitive dysfunction. Therefore, early treatment for prevention of seizures is of high interest. Using a rat model of paraoxon poisoning, we tested the efficacy of dif

RT2C: Predicting Time-to-New Caries with Structured Dental Data Using RNN.

Dental caries is a highly prevalent chronic condition requiring accurate tools to identify at-risk patients and guide preventive care. Most existing caries risk models provide only binary predictions and overlook time-to-event information. Considering that modern caries management relies on risk assessment during routine dental examinations, we developed RT2C, a survival model based on a recurrent neural network (RNN). This model supports caries risk management by assessing the likelihood (Caries Management by Risk Assessment [CAMBRA]) that a patient will be diagnosed with new caries by the ne

Addressing grading bias in rock climbing: machine and deep learning approaches.

The determination rock climbing route difficulty is notoriously subjective. While there is no official standard for determining the difficulty of a rock climbing route, various difficulty rating scales exist. But as the sport gains more popularity and prominence on the international stage at the Olympic Games, the need for standardized determination of route difficulty becomes more important. In commercial climbing gyms, consistency and accuracy in route production are crucial for success. Route setters often rely on personal judgment when determining route difficulty, but the success of comme

Time series models in prediction of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome cases in Shandong province, China.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV). Predicting the incidence of this disease in advance is crucial for policymakers to develop prevention and control strategies. In this study, we utilized historical incidence data of SFTS (2013-2020) in Shandong Province, China to establish three univariate prediction models based on two time-series forecasting algorithms Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Prophet, as well as a special type of recurrent neural network Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm. Rapid Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in Human Nasopharyngeal Specimens Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Deep Learning Algorithms.

A rapid and cost-effective method to detect the infection of SARS-CoV-2 is fundamental to mitigating the current COVID-19 pandemic. Herein, a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor with a deep learning algorithm has been developed for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in human nasopharyngeal swab (HNS) specimens. The SERS sensor was prepared using a silver nanorod array (AgNR) substrate by assembling DNA probes to capture SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The SERS spectra of HNS specimens were collected after RNA hybridization, and the corresponding SERS peaks were identified. The RNA detection r

Deep Physiological Model for Blood Glucose Prediction in T1DM Patients.

Accurate estimations for the near future levels of blood glucose are crucial for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) patients in order to be able to react on time and avoid hypo and hyper-glycemic episodes. Accurate predictions for blood glucose are the base for control algorithms in glucose regulating systems such as the artificial pancreas. Numerous research studies have already been conducted in order to provide predictions for blood glucose levels with particularities in the input signals and underlying models used. These models can be categorized into two major families: those based on tuning

Label-free detection of glioma radioresistance using exosomal SERS spectra and machine learning.

Glioma ranks among the most intractable malignancies. Given the intricate anatomy of the brain, complete surgical resection is seldom achievable, making radiotherapy a necessary adjunct. Nevertheless, radioresistance, which is closely linked to recurrence, still represents a critical clinical barrier. Effective tumor biomarkers and novel detection methods are urgently required to predict treatment resistance and monitor therapeutic response. Here, we employed surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with proteomics to profile, for the first time, the characteristic spectral patterns

Benzodiazepine-resistant epilepsy: unraveling molecular mechanisms and developing multimodal therapeutic strategies.

Epilepsy is one of the most common nervous system diseases, which is characterized by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal neuronal discharges in the brain. Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) brings great challenges to clinical treatment. Benzodiazepines (BZDs), as the first-line treatment for acute seizures and Status Epilepticus (SE), are widely used because of their potent inhibitory neuromodulation by regulating γ-aminobutyric acid-A(GABAA) receptors. However, long-term use of BZDs may induce drug resistance, leading to a significant decrease in efficacy and increasing the difficulty of treatm

A deep learning approach for non-invasive Alzheimer's monitoring using microwave radar data.

Over 50 million people globally suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), emphasizing the need for efficient, early diagnostic tools. Traditional methods like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans are expensive, bulky, and slow. Microwave-based techniques offer a cost-effective, non-invasive, and portable solution, diverging from conventional neuroimaging practices. This article introduces a deep learning approach for monitoring AD , using realistic numerical brain phantoms to simulate scattered signals via the CST Studio Suite. The obtained data is preprocessed using

Learning-Based Motion-Intention Prediction for End-Point Control of Upper-Limb-Assistive Robots.

The lack of intuitive and active human-robot interaction makes it difficult to use upper-limb-assistive devices. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based controller that intuitively uses onset motion to predict the desired end-point position for an assistive robot. A multi-modal sensing system comprising inertial measurement units (IMUs), electromyographic (EMG) sensors, and mechanomyography (MMG) sensors was implemented. This system was used to acquire kinematic and physiological signals during reaching and placing tasks performed by five healthy subjects. The onset motion data of eac

USMPep: universal sequence models for major histocompatibility complex binding affinity prediction.

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy is a promising route towards personalized cancer treatment. A key algorithmic challenge in this process is to decide if a given peptide (neoepitope) binds with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). This is an active area of research and there are many MHC binding prediction algorithms that can predict the MHC binding affinity for a given peptide to a high degree of accuracy. However, most of the state-of-the-art approaches make use of complicated training and model selection procedures, are restricted to peptides of a certain length and/or rely on heuristics. R

Machine learning applications in prostate cancer magnetic resonance imaging.

With this review, we aimed to provide a synopsis of recently proposed applications of machine learning (ML) in radiology focusing on prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). After defining the difference between ML and classical rule-based algorithms and the distinction among supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning, we explain the characteristic of deep learning (DL), a particular new type of ML, including its structure mimicking human neural networks and its 'black box' nature. Differences in the pipeline for applying ML and DL to prostate MRI are highlighted. The following pote

Automatic Cone Photoreceptor Localisation in Healthy and Stargardt Afflicted Retinas Using Deep Learning.

We present a robust deep learning framework for the automatic localisation of cone photoreceptor cells in Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) split-detection images. Monitoring cone photoreceptors with AOSLO imaging grants an excellent view into retinal structure and health, provides new perspectives into well known pathologies, and allows clinicians to monitor the effectiveness of experimental treatments. The MultiDimensional Recurrent Neural Network (MDRNN) approach developed in this paper is the first method capable of reliably and automatically identifying cones in both h

Increased involvement of the parahippocampal gyri in a sad mood predicts future depressive symptoms.

Behavioral studies suggest a relationship between autobiographical memory, rumination and depression. The objective of this study was to determine whether remitted depressed patients show alterations in connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC, a node in the default mode network) with the parahippocampal gyri (PHG, a region associated with autobiographical memory) while intensively recalling negative memories and whether this is related to daily life symptoms and to the further course of depression. Sad mood was induced with keywords of personal negative life events in participants

Development of Risk Prediction Models for Severe Periodontitis in a Thai Population: Statistical and Machine Learning Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Severe periodontitis affects 26% of Thai adults and 11.2% of adults globally and is characterized by the loss of alveolar bone height. Full-mouth examination by periodontal probing is the gold standard for diagnosis but is time- and resource-intensive. A screening model to identify those at high risk of severe periodontitis would offer a targeted approach and aid in reducing the workload for dentists. While statistical modelling by a logistic regression is commonly applied, optimal performance depends on feature selections and engineering. Machine learning has been recently gaining
