Bismuth increases hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity of histamine H2-receptor antagonists.

The effects of histamine H2-receptor antagonists, alone or in a combination with bismuth, on *OH-provoked degradation of deoxyribose were st … ing drugs. These findings might be one more explanation why bismuth salts, in combination with acid-reducing agents, are more effective anti-ulcer agents.

Treatment of acute neuroleptic-induced movement disorders.

Acute extrapyramidal syndromes (EPS), including dystonia, parkinsonism, and akathisia, are associated with the use of virtually all neuroleptic agents. They may be alleviated by reducing the neuroleptic dosage, switching to a lower-potency drug, or administering an adjunctive agent such as an anticholinergic, amantadine, benzodiazepine, or beta-blocker. Akathisia may be only partly dispelled by anticholinergics; alternatives are beta-blockers, benzodiazepines, and clonidine. In patients receiving long-term neuroleptic therapy, both the prophylactic use and the duration of treatment with concom

Efficacy and safety of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blocker therapy for IgA nephropathy: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Published reports evaluating whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blocker (ACEI/ARB) therapy could bring improvements to the prognosis of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) have yielded confusing results, which entails a systematic review of those reports. In this study, we summarized currently available evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of ACEI/ARB therapy of IgAN. METHODS: PubMed, International comprehensive biomedical information bibliographic database produced by the National Library of Medicine (MEDLI

Techniques for navigating postsurgical adhesions: Insights into mechanisms and future directions.

Postsurgical adhesions are a common complication of surgical procedures that can lead to postoperative pain, bowel obstruction, infertility, as well as complications with future procedures. Several agents have been developed to prevent adhesion formation, such as barriers, anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic agents. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of physical barrier agents, but they have been associated with conflicting clinical studies and controversy in the clinical utilization of anti-adhesion barriers. In this review, we summarize the human anatomy of the perito

Topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: a new perspective in glaucoma therapy.

Oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been used extensively in the treatment of all types of glaucoma. These agents reduce intraocular pressure by suppressing the rate of aqueous humor formation. Despite their efficacy as ocular hypotensive agents, these agents are not always used for protracted therapy because of significant systemic side effects. Consequently, topically active carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been a goal of glaucoma researchers for many years. Recently, a new class of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors has entered clinical trials as ocular hypotensive agents. The thienothiopy

Cardiac Cell Membrane-Coated Nanoparticles as a Potential Targeted Delivery System for Cardiac Therapy.

Cardiomyopathies, a cause of heart failure, are a predominant cause of death globally and may lead to discernible myocardial abnormalities. Several therapeutic agents were discovered, developed, investigated, and evaluated to save patients' lives and improve their quality of life. The effective administration of drugs improves therapeutic outcomes while reducing side effects. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilised for the delivery of therapeutic agents and demonstrate promise in reducing myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury. However, significant limitations of NPs include non-specific targe

Comparing the effects of mannitol and hypertonic saline in severe traumatic brain injury patients with elevated intracranial pressure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Controlling elevated intracranial pressure following brain injury with hyperosmolar agents is one of the mainstay treatments in traumatic brain injury patients. In this study, we compared the effects of hypertonic saline (HS) and mannitol in reducing increased intracranial pressure. METHODS: A total of 637 patients from 15 studies were included in our meta-analysis. The primary outcomes were mortality, the length of stay in the hospital and ICU, and the Glasgow Outcome Scale at follow-up. RESULTS: The mortality in the mannitol group was not statistically different compared to the

Chemokines in the Pathogenesis and as Therapeutical Markers and Targets of HCV Chronic Infection and HCV Extrahepatic Manifestations.

Cytokines and chemokines, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection-induced, participate in viral control and liver damage. The complex cytokine network, operating during initial infection allows a coordinated and effective development of innate and adaptive immune responses. "HCV interferes with cytokines at various levels and escapes immune response by inducing a T helper (Th)2/T cytotoxic 2 cytokine profile". A predominance of the Th1 immune response (and related cytokines) has been evidenced in chronic hepatitis C infection and in extrahepatic manifestations. Interferon (IFN)-γ and IFN-γ-inducible

The role of antiplatelet therapy in patients with peripheral artery disease and lower extremity peripheral artery revascularization.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although antiplatelet agents are frequently prescribed to patients with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD), there is an overall lack of consensus among published evidence and guidelines with respect to this practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Antiplatelet agents are prescribed to patients with PAD to reduce both cardiovascular and limb-based events during the follow-up period. A large evidence base supports the use of antiplatelet monotherapy with aspirin or clopidogrel in patients with symptomatic PAD or a history of peripheral artery revascularization. However, antipl

Meta-analysis of calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing regimens in kidney transplantation.

Calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing strategies in kidney transplantation may spare patients the adverse effects of these drugs, but the efficacy of these strategies is unknown. Here, we conduct a meta-analysis to assess outcomes associated with reducing calcineurin inhibitor exposure from the time of transplantation. We search Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials for randomized controlled trials published between 1966 and 2010 that compared de novo calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing regimens to calcineurin-inhibitor-based regimens. In this analysis, we include 56 studies comprising

Aberrantly increased hydrophobicity shared by mutants of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase in familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

More than 100 different mutations in the gene encoding Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) cause preferential motor neuron degeneration in familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although the cellular target(s) of mutant SOD1 toxicity have not been precisely specified, evidence to date supports the hypothesis that ALS-related mutations may increase the burden of partially unfolded SOD1 species. Influences that may destabilize SOD1 in vivo include impaired metal ion binding, reduction of the intrasubunit disulfide bond, or oxidative modification. In this study, we observed that metal-defici

Establishment of enteral nutrition: prokinetic agents and small bowel feeding tubes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutritional support is vital to improving the clinical outcomes in patients in the intensive care unit. Enteral nutrition should be administered early and aggressively, thereby reducing the need for parenteral nutrition. Because nasogastric feeding is often associated with gastrointestinal intolerance, recent research has focused on the use of prokinetic agents or small bowel feeding tubes to enhance the successful establishment and maintenance of enteral nutrition. RECENT FINDINGS: Prokinetic agents (such as metoclopramide and erythromycin) improve markers of gastric empty

Treatment and prevention of intraepithelial neoplasia: an important target for accelerated new agent development.

Precancer or intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) is a noninvasive lesion that has genetic abnormalities, loss of cellular control functions, and some phenotypic characteristics of invasive cancer and that predicts for a substantial likelihood of developing invasive cancer. The AACR Task Force on the Treatment and Prevention of IEN has delineated the relationship between IEN and cancer risk as well as the clinical benefit that can be derived from reducing IEN burden. Although several effective endoscopic and surgical treatments for IEN have become standard medical practice, these interventions can

[Anthracycline-Induced Cardiotoxicity and Exploration of Cardioprotective Drugs].

Many anticancer drugs, including anthracycline drugs, pose a risk of cardiovascular damage as an adverse reaction. This can detrimentally impact the prognosis and quality of life of patients, potentially leading to the interruption of cancer chemotherapy and compromising cancer treatment. Recently, onco-cardiology (or cardio-oncology) has developed as a new interdisciplinary field that focuses on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular toxicity of anticancer drugs. In this review, we explore the mechanism underlying the cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines and examine pharmacological agents

Weighting Material in Drilling Fluids: Sagging Mechanisms, Influencing Factors, and Prevention Strategies.

Drilling high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) formations requires high-density drilling fluids, commonly formulated using weighting materials such as Barite, hematite, Micromax, ilmenite, magnetite, and manganese tetroxide. However, these materials are prone to sagging, resulting in density variations that compromise wellbore stability, pressure control, and overall drilling safety. This review addresses the critical challenge of weighting material sagging by summarizing recent advances in understanding sagging mechanisms and mitigation strategies. The sagging behavior of weighting materi
