Syrian civil war and assessment of tuberculosis among Syrian refugees and local citizens in Mardin.

BACKGROUND: We compared tuberculosis (TB) characteristics and outcomes between Syrian refugees and local citizens in Mardin, Turkey (2016-2023), a border province with substantial population mobility. METHODS: Retrospective, registry-based cross-sectional analysis of 491 patients (locals n = 456; refugees n = 35). Descriptive comparisons used χ 2/Fisher (categorical) and Mann-Whitney U (age). Annual incidence per 100,000 used mid-year denominators (locals: ABPRS/NVI; refugees: DGMM/PMM and UNHCR). For outcomes with significant crude differences (treatment success, BCG scar, transferred-out), …

Prevalence of mental disorders and related risk factors in refugees and asylum seekers in Campania.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the increasing presence of refugees and asylum seekers displaced from their country of origin, determined significant social, economic, humanitarian and public health implications in host countries, including Italy. These populations are exposed to several potential stressful experiences which make them vulnerable to psychological distress. In fact, the majority of studies addressing the topic found a higher prevalence of mental disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, in refugees and asylum seekers with respect to the g…

Good practice in reaching and treating refugees in addiction care in Germany - a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Health and adequate access to health care are human rights. Refugees are at risk for substance abuse. Despite the known structural and personal risk factors for abuse, refugees in Germany continue to face barriers to adequate addiction prevention and care, which is a violation of the fundamental human right to health care. The question arises as to how barriers for refugees in reaching addiction services and care can be overcome. In the presented study, strategies for good practices to deconstruct these barriers were identified. METHOD: A total of 21 experts participated in a thre…

Occurrence, resistance patterns, and management of carbapenemase-producing bacteria in war-wounded refugees from Ukraine.

We analyzed consecutive clinical cases of infections due to carbapenemase-producing gram-negative bacteria detected in war-wounded patients from Ukraine who were treated at one university medical center in southwest Germany between June and December 2022. The isolates of multiresistant gram-negative bacteria were subjected to a thorough microbiological characterization and whole genome sequencing (WGS). We identified five war-wounded Ukrainian patients who developed infections with New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase 1-positive Klebsiella pneumoniae. Two isolates also carried OXA-48 carbapenemases.

Challenges in substance use treatment as perceived by professionals and Arabic-speaking refugees in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Substance use (SU) and substance use disorders (SUDs) have been recently documented among forcibly displaced populations as a coping mechanism to migration and postmigration stressors. Although the literature exploring substance use among refugees has grown recently, little is known about SU among Arabic-speaking refugees and, more specifically, on the challenges and experiences in regards to SU treatment. This study investigates this topic from the perspectives of Arabic-speaking refugees and professionals in Germany. METHODS: Design and participants To expand our knowledge on th…

Explanatory models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among Afghan refugees in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The current situation in Afghanistan makes it likely that we are facing a new wave of Afghan refugees, warranting more knowledge about how to deal with mental health problems among them. This study aims to gain more knowledge on Explanatory Models (EM) of depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) among Afghan refugees resettled in Norway. METHODS: We conducted six gender-separated, semi-structured focusgroup interviews based on vignettes with Afghan refugees (total N = 27). The vignettes described a fictional character with symptoms of either depression or PTSD symptom…

Health Status of Afghan Refugees in Europe: Policy and Practice Implications for an Optimised Healthcare.

Four decades of civil war, violence, and destabilisation have forced millions of Afghans to flee their homes and to move to other countries worldwide. This increasing phenomenon may challenge physicians unfamiliar with the health status of this population, which may be markedly different from that of the host country. Moreover, several factors during their migration, such as transport in closed containers, accidental injuries, malnutrition, and accommodation in detention centres and refugee camps have a major influence on the health of refugees. By taking into account the variety of the specif…

A Systematic Review of Autobiographical Memory and Mental Health Research on Refugees and Asylum Seekers.

Research examining trauma, memory, and mental health among refugee and asylum-seeking people has increased in recent years. We systematically reviewed empirical work focusing on the link between autobiographical memory and mental health among these populations. The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42018095888). Six major databases were searched in August-2020 with no time limit for publication. Following PRISMA Statement guidelines, 22 articles reporting ten quantitative, nine qualitative, and three mixed-method studies were selected from 254 articles identified in the initial

How Refugees' Stereotypes Toward Host Society Members Predict Acculturation Orientations: The Role of Perceived Discrimination.

Refugee migration leads to increased diversity in host societies and refugees have to face many stereotyped attitudes in the host society. However, there has been little research on minority group stereotypes toward host society members and how these stereotypes relate to the acculturation-relevant attitudes of refugees in their first phase of acculturation. This study surveyed 783 refugees in Germany who had migrated mostly in the so-called "refugee crisis" between 2015 and 2016. At the time of the survey in 2018, they had been in Germany for an average of 27 months (SD = 15 months). These re…

Factors Influencing the Frequency of Airway Infections in Underage Refugees: A Retrospective, Cross Sectional Study.

Background: Infections are a leading cause of refugee morbidity. Recent data on the rate of airway infections and factors influencing their spread in refugee reception centers is scarce. Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study of de-identified medical records with a focus on respiratory infections in underage refugees was conducted at two large German refugee reception centers. Results: In total, medical data from n = 10,431 refugees over an observational period of n = 819 days was analyzed. Among pediatric patients (n = 4289), 55.3% presented at least once to the on-site medical ward …

Active and latent tuberculosis in refugees and asylum seekers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, there were 70.8 million refugees, asylum seekers and persons displaced by wars and conflicts worldwide. Many of these individuals face a high risk for tuberculosis in their country of origin, which may be accentuated by adverse conditions endured during their journey. We summarised the prevalence of active and latent tuberculosis infection in refugees and asylum seekers through a systematic literature review and meta-analyses by country of origin and host continent. METHODS: Articles published in Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science and LILACS from January 2000 to August 2017 …

A systematic review of risk and protective factors of mental health in unaccompanied minor refugees.

In recent years, there has been a rising interest in the mental health of unaccompanied minor refugees (UMR), who are a high-risk group for mental disorders. Especially the investigation of predictive factors of the mental health of young refugees has received increasing attention. However, there has been no review on this current issue for the specific group of UMR so far. We aimed to summarize and evaluate the existing findings of specific risk and protective factors to identify the most verified influences on the mental health of UMR. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature search. …
