This clinical report describes a technique for fabricating a retrofit zirconia crown and clasp for an existing removable partial denture (RPD) using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). A 58-year-old patient developed acute pulpitis of a tooth, and the RPD clasp was broken on the tooth. A pre-preparation scan was captured using an intraoral scanner. The existing RPD was placed in the mouth, and scans of the post-preparation, antagonist arch, and interocclusal record were made. A zirconia crown was designed by superimposing the pre-preparation scan and the post-prep

Because adherence of base metal alloys is important for the long-term clinical success of adhesive fixed partial dentures, it has been necessary to improve adhesion to metal substrate by using different surface treatments. This study used different surface conditioning methods and two different luting resins to evaluate the shear bond strength of base metal alloys to dentin and enamel. Sixty noncarious freshly extracted human teeth were mounted in a plastic holder filled with autopolymerized acrylic resin. After the roots were removed and 30 flat enamel and 30 flat dentin surfaces were exposed

OBJECTIVES: Millions of restorative procedures are performed annually in the United States, yet very little is known about their distribution in the general population. With increasing concern about potential adverse health effects of some restorative materials, a better understanding of the extent of exposure to these materials in the population is important. The purpose of this study is to report the prevalence, patterns, and distribution of dental restorative materials in a population of male veterans.
METHODS: This collaborative study with the US Air Force examined 1,166 male veterans to

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer sealants are an alternative to resin-based sealants, especially for use in partially erupted permanent molars. The authors conducted a study to compare the retention, marginal staining and cariostatic properties of a glass ionomer sealant with those of a resin-based sealant during a 24-month period.
METHODS: We included in this study 39 patients aged 5 through 9 years who had bilateral partially erupted first permanent molars. One of us (S.B.) placed a resin-based sealant (Delton Plus FS+, Dentsply Professional, York, Pa.) (group D) on a partially erupted first molar

Amalgam does not bond to tooth tissue; therefore, restorations using such material are prone to leakage despite the deposition of corrosion products. This study evaluated the effectiveness of four cavity treatment systems placed in vivo in sealing restorations of amalgam. Four cavity treatment systems were investigated in this study: Cervitec, Gluma One Bond, Panavia 21 and Copaliner Dentin Varnish and Sealant. No cavity treatment was placed in an additional group to serve as a control. The teeth were extracted within 15 minutes of restoration placement. The specimens were thermocycled (5-55 +

The optical stability of thin ceramic laminate veneers may be affected by both the adhesive interface and the underlying substrate. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of immediate dentin sealing (IDS) on the color stability of lithium disilicate laminate veneers bonded to sound and eroded dentin after accelerated aging. Forty bovine dentin specimens were allocated into four groups according to dentin condition and adhesive protocol: sound dentin without IDS, sound dentin with IDS, eroded dentin without IDS, and eroded dentin with IDS. Lithium disilicate disks were cemented using a lig

Higher yttria content enhances the translucency and appearance of dental zirconia materials. Alterations in material composition also affect mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to compare the fracture load after artificial short-term aging of monolithic, full-contour zirconia crowns with different amounts of yttria-stabilization. Sixty crowns (thirty super high translucent crowns (5Y-Z) and thirty high translucent crowns (3Y-Z)) were produced to fit a model of a premolar with a shallow chamfer preparation. The crowns were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement on composite abutm

INTRODUCTION: MTA has good biological properties, and it is a mineralization-inducing material with different indications in endodontics. Initially this material was not recommended as root canal sealer. However, a resin sealer based on mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA Fillapex) was recently released with this indication. Because MTA is in contact with the periodontal tissues, bone, and pulp, it is important to know its cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of MTA canal sealer (Fillapex) compared with white MTA cement and AH
