Nitric oxide evokes an adaptive response to oxidative stress by arresting respiration.

Aerobic metabolism generates biologically challenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the endogenous autooxidation of components of the electron transport chain (ETC). Basal levels of oxidative stress can dramatically rise upon activation of the NADPH oxidase-dependent respiratory burst. To minimize ROS toxicity, prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms express a battery of low-molecular-weight thiol scavengers, a legion of detoxifying catalases, peroxidases, and superoxide dismutases, as well as a variety of repair systems. We present herein blockage of bacterial respiration as a novel strategy …

Transient CFD simulation of the respiration process and inter-person exposure assessment.

It is known that the person-to-person spreading of certain infectious diseases is related with the transmission of human exhaled air in the indoor environments, and this is suspected to be the case with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. This paper presents the numerical analysis of the human respiration process and the transport of exhaled air by breathing, sneezing, and coughing and their potential impact on the adjacent person in a modeled room with displacement ventilation. In order to account for the influence of the thermal plume around the human body, a three-dimensi…

Cheyne-Stokes respiration in stroke: relationship to hypocapnia and occult cardiac dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Central sleep apnea (CSA) and Cheyne-Stokes respiration have been reported in association with stroke, but their pathophysiologic correlates have not been well described. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that (1) CSA in patients with stroke is associated with nocturnal hypocapnia and (2) in those stroke patients with CSA and with left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction, periodic breathing (PB) will have a Cheyne-Stokes respiration pattern in which cycle duration is greater than in those without LV systolic dysfunction. METHODS: We prospectively performed polysomnography and e…

Cheyne-Stokes respiration in patients with congestive heart failure: causes and consequences.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration is a form of periodic breathing in which central apneas and hypopneas alternate with periods of hyperventilation, producing a waxing and waning pattern of tidal volume. This review focuses on the causes and consequences of Cheyne-Stokes respiration in patients with congestive heart failure, in whom the prevalence is strikingly high and ranges from 30% to 50%. Several factors have been implicated in the genesis of Cheyne-Stokes respiration, including low cardiac output and recurrent hypoxia. The key pathophysiological mechanism triggering Cheyne-Stokes respiration is h…

Changes in respiration in NREM sleep in hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Sleep hypoventilation is common in hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may contribute to daytime hypercapnia. The contributions of respiratory drive and respiratory mechanics to alterations in minute ventilation VI during sleep in this group have not been assessed. We assessed VI, breathing pattern, upper airway and total lung resistance (UAR, RL), intraoesophageal diaphragmatic EMG (EMGoes), intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEPi), dynamic compliance (Cdyn), pressure-time product of oesophageal pressure (PTPoes), tension-time index of the diaphragm (TTIdi),

Respiration-dependent removal of exogenous H2O2 in brain mitochondria: inhibition by Ca2+.

In brain mitochondria, state 4 respiration supported by the NAD-linked substrates glutamate/malate in the presence of EGTA promotes a high rate of exogenous H2O2 removal. Omitting EGTA decreases the H2O2 removal rate by almost 80%. The decrease depends on the influx of contaminating Ca2+, being prevented by the Ca2+ uniporter inhibitor ruthenium red. Arsenite is also an inhibitor (maximal effect approximately 40%, IC50, 12 microm). The H2O2 removal rate (EGTA present) is decreased by 20% during state 3 respiration and by 60-70% in fully uncoupled conditions. H2O2 removal in mitochondria is lar…

Mitochondrial respiration and Ca2+ waves are linked during fertilization and meiosis completion.

Fertilization increases both cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration and oxygen consumption in the egg but the relationship between these two phenomena remains largely obscure. We have measured mitochondrial oxygen consumption and the mitochondrial NADH concentration on single ascidian eggs and found that they increase in phase with each series of meiotic Ca(2+) waves emitted by two pacemakers (PM1 and PM2). Oxygen consumption also increases in response to Ins(1,4,5)P(3)-induced Ca(2+) transients. Using mitochondrial inhibitors we show that active mitochondria sequester cytosolic Ca(2+) during sperm-tr

Respiratory modulation of heart rate and blood pressure during Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) is a form of periodic breathing associated with oscillations in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP), which have previously been attributed to the effects of intermittent hypoxia and arousals from sleep. We herein review the major findings from a series of experiments, in which we explored the possibility that the ventilatory oscillations of CSR can independently modulate HR and BP. Using frequency spectral analysis, we showed that CSR in patients with heart failure causes oscillations in HR and BP that are eliminated by abolition of ventilatory oscillations,…

Effects of vagus nerve stimulation on respiration during sleep: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is associated with respiratory effects such as hoarseness, dyspnea, and laryngeal irritation. The … eliorated VNS-related apneas and hypopneas. CONCLUSIONS: VNS is associated with adverse changes in respiration during sleep. In patients without preexisting OSA, this VNS effect is probably not clinically significant. In patients with preexisting OSA, VNS should be administered with care. Lowering VNS stimulus frequency or prolonging off-time may prevent exa …

Effects of Photofrin photodynamic action on mitochondrial respiration and superoxide radical generation.

Cyanide-resistant respiration increases after irradiation of isolated mitochondria in the presence of Photofrin. This suggests an enhancement of electron leakage which has been evaluated by measuring superoxide radical formation in submitochondrial particles incubated with 6 micrograms/ml Photofrin in the medium and irradiated with increasing doses of light at 365 nm. After a dose of 4.5 kJ/m2 has been delivered, superoxide generation increases by a factor of approximately 2.5 at the level of NADH dehydrogenase and by a factor approximately 1.5 in the cyt bc1 region. These effects have been co…

O2 supply dependence of respiration in patients with mitral stenosis undergoing valvuloplasty.

Although systemic oxygen consumption (V O2) is independent of O2 delivery (Q O2) in normal subjects, studies have suggested that supply dependence of V O2 may occur in patients with chronic diseases associated with reduced Q O2. In this regard, we previously found that Q O2 and V O2 increased when cardiac output was improved after balloon valvuloplasty in patients with aortic stenosis. However, their increases in Q O2 were relatively small, and it was not known whether the increase in V O2 was caused by the increase in delivery or was merely a response to the transient hypotension induced by v

Coordination between respiration and deglutition in a preterm infant mammal, Sus scrofa.

In adult mammals, the path of a swallowed bolus of solid food crosses the laryngeal opening, so that coordination between respiration and deglutition is critical for airway protection. The nature of such coordination in preterm, low-birth-weight infants with immature nervous systems, is not clear. Using preterm pigs as a model, two measures of respiration were recorded and then coordinated with a high-resolution cineradiographic record of swallowing. Swallows, divided into three distinct events, began before inhalation ended, but expiration did not start until after the milk had passed around …

Lysosomal enzyme activity influenced by various types of respiration during extracorporeal circulation.

The hypoxic damage of the lung as seen after extracorporeal circulation (ECC) is in correlation to lysosomal hydrolase and protease activation. In the recent study the effect of various types of respiration during ECC on lysosomal enzyme release were studied. 53 patients undergoing open heart surgery were divided into 4 groups: Apnoea, low frequency, continuous positive airway pressure, combination of low frequency and continuous positive airway pressure. Paired blood samples were withdrawn from the superior vena cava (SVC) and the left atrium (LA) throughout the cardiopulmonary bypass. A cont…

Effects of anionic xenobiotics on rat kidney. I--Tissue and mitochondrial respiration.

The polar 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) metabolite, 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)acetic acid (DDA), and the phenoxyacetic ac … h alpha-ketoglutarate or pyruvate-malate), all three agents also depressed State 3 (ADP-stimulated) respiration. Again, DDA was more effective than 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T. These results suggest that accumulation of these or other anionic xenobiotics may lead to toxicity in those tissues possessing the organic anion transport system.

[Echocardiographic findings of pulsus paradoxus: cardiovascular changes due to respiration (author's transl)].

Echocardiographic studies were performed in two cases with pulsus paradoxus (Case 1: a 13-year-old boy, acute viral pericarditis with massive pericardial effusion; Case 2: a 25-year-old woman, status asthmaticus) and in a normal subject when his intra-airway pressure rapidly fell on a deep negative level, e.g., during Mueller maneuver. During inspiration in both clinical cases, the anterior mitral leaflet showed a diminished diastolic excursion, and the right ventricular dimension increased accompanied by a reciprocal decrease in the left ventricular dimension. In Case 2, in addition, an abrup

Respiration and acid-base balance of blood after diffuse experimental brain injury.

Diffuse brain injury in rabbits was caused by injecting olive oil and saline into one internal carotid artery. In this report, the fourth of a series, the effects of this experimental brain injury on respiration and acid-base balance of blood are analyzed. The animals that withstood the injury best were those that had a lower pre-traumatic pCO2; the animals that suffered a rise in intracranial pressure and succumbed to the injury quickly did so in spite of pronounced hyperventilation after the injury. Arterial pCO2 immediately before the injury was the only significant prognostic factor in thi…
