Antiulcer effects of nomifensine, a new antidepressant, on stress-induced ulcers in the rat.

The effectiveness of the antidepressant agents 8-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-phenyl-isoquinoline (nomifensine, Alival) and amitriptyline on various ulcer models was tested by using at least 300 rats. Oral application of 3 mg/kg nomifensine resulted in a 50% decrease of stress ulcers produced by water immersion. Using an immobilisation ulcer model the ID50 of nomifensine was calculated to be 1.89 mg/kg p.o. Amitriptyline proved to be less active in both models. Neither er of the two compounds had any beneficial effects on ulcers produced by pyloric ligation. Gastric acid secretion stimu

Psychological Coercion in Human Trafficking: An Application of Biderman's Framework.

This study examined coercive conditions experienced by trafficked persons in the context of Biderman's theory of coercion. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 adult women trafficked into Los Angeles County, from 10 countries, for domestic work and/or sex work. Participants described health problems they experienced in relation to their trafficking experience and their perceptions of conditions that caused health problems. Utilizing a framework analysis approach, we analyzed themes using Biderman's framework. Participants reported experiencing the range of nonphysical coercive tacti

Ethical Issues Perceived by Nurses Involved in Endoscopic Practices in Japan.

Endoscopy departments tend to prioritize task efficiency, which may sometimes limit individualized and patient-centered nursing care. Structured workflows and time constraints can make it challenging for nurses to fully address patients' needs and ethical concerns. However, the ethical issues specific to endoscopic nursing remain largely unexplored. This study aims to clarify ethical issues perceived by nurses involved in endoscopic practices. A qualitative study was conducted with 14 nurses working in departments performing endoscopic practices in 3 hospitals in Japan. Data were collected usi

Psychobehavioral and nutritional predictors of weight loss in obese women treated with sibutramine.

OBJECTIVE: To reveal whether baseline body mass index (BMI), and psychobehavioral and nutritional markers were significant predictors of the change in BMI observed after 4 and 12 months in obese women enrolled in a weight reduction program, including low-energy diet, increased physical activity, cognitive behavior therapy and sibutramine. The impact of changes in psychobehavioral and nutritional markers observed after 4 and 12 months of treatment on BMI changes was also investigated. DESIGN: During a double-blind placebo-controlled 4-month period, subjects received either sibutramine (10 mg/d

Factor structure of the Tonic Immobility Scale in female sexual assault survivors: an exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an involuntary component of the fear response that is characterized by freezing or immobility in situations involving extreme fear coupled with physical restraint. The present investigation evaluated the factor structure of the Tonic Immobility Scale (TIS; Forsyth, J. P., Marx, B., Fusé, T. M. K., Heidt, J., & Gallup, G. G., Jr. (2000). The Tonic Immobility Scale. Albany, NY: Authors)--a newly developed measure to assess components of TI in female sexual assault survivors. Study 1 (N=88) consisted of an Exploratory Factor Analysis of sexual assault survivors' responses

A randomized trial of early psychiatric intervention in residential care: impact on health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of psychological and behavioral disturbances among older adults living in residential care facilities is high, and it has been shown previously that people with such symptoms have poorer health outcomes. This study was designed to assess the efficacy of an early psychiatric intervention on the 12-month health outcomes of older adults admitted to residential care facilities in Perth, Western Australia. We hypothesized that subjects in the intervention group would have better mental and physical health outcomes than controls. METHODS: The study was designed as a rando

Effect of nonviolent self-defense training on male psychiatric staff members' aggression and fear.

OBJECTIVE: Male staff members at two state psychiatric hospitals were trained in nonviolent self-defense skills for dealing with potentially assaultive patients to determine whether such training could reduce the number of assaults and episodes of patient restraint. METHODS: Three groups of male staff received didactic training, didactic and physical skills training, or no training in the nonviolent self-defense skills of protective profile, repel, and push-off, as well as in evasive movement. Effects of the training were evaluated using the Buss-Durkee Hostility-Guilt Inventory; a questionna

Vorarephilia: a case study in masochism and erotic consumption.

Vorarephilia ("vore") is an infrequently presenting paraphilia, characterized by the erotic desire to consume or be consumed by another person or creature. Few data exist on vore though several cases have been reported which appear to be consistent with basic vorarephilic interests. Because this sexual interest cannot be enacted in real life due to physical and/or legal restraints, vorarephilic fantasies are often composed in text or illustrations and shared with other members of this subculture via the Internet. Similarities with aspects of bondage/dominance sadomasochism interests, more spec

Metastasis and neuroendocrine system in stressed mice.

The effects of experimental stressors have been examined for their differential effects on primary tumor growth and spontaneous lung metastasis in syngeneic mice bearing the weakly immunogenic tumor Lewis lung carcinoma. The effects caused by the early weaning, physical restraint and foot-shock are in general small, and affected by a high variability. On the contrary, spatial disorientation reproducibly causes a specific increase in tumor metastases. The effects of spatial disorientation are sensitive to the inhibition by treatment with bromocryptine and guanethidine, and particularly by a cen

The Adverse Effects of Auditory Stress on Mouse Uterus Receptivity and Behaviour.

Stress during gestation has harmful effects on pregnancy outcome and can lead to spontaneous abortion. Few studies, however, have addressed the impact of gestational stress, particularly auditory stress, on behavioural performance and pregnancy outcome in mice. This study aimed to examine the effect of two types of gestational stress on uterus receptivity and behavioural performance. Pregnant C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to either auditory or physical stress conditions or a control condition from gestational days 12-16. The auditory stress regimen used loud 3000 Hz tone, while the physi

Rapid Fire: Acute Brain Failure in Older Emergency Department Patients.

Delirium is common in older emergency department (ED) patients. Although associated with significant morbidity and mortality, it often goes unrecognized. A consistent approach to evaluation of mental status, including use of validated tools, is key to diagnosing delirium. Identification of the precipitating event requires thorough evaluation, including detailed history, medication reconciliation, physical examination, and medical work-up, for causes of delirium. Management is aimed at identifying and treating the underlying cause. Meaningful improvements in delirium care can be achieved when p

Pre- and Post- COVID-19 Pandemic Pneumonia Rates in Hospitalized Schizophrenia Patients.

Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia is a disabling psychiatric condition, affecting around 1% of people worldwide. It has been ranked among the ten most disabling conditions globally. Alongside the psychological and social burdens imposed on individuals suffering from this disease, there are also serious complications regarding the physical health of these patients. Pneumonia is a significant cause of death in patients with schizophrenia. This group of patients also has a higher risk of developing pneumonia and all-cause mortality compared to those without schizophrenia, along with an inc

Effects of sedation on haematological, biochemical, coagulation profile, and kaolin-activated thromboelastography in rabbits.

Blood sampling and analysis are essential procedures for assessing the health status of exotic pets. While careful manual restraint is generally recommended, sedation may be necessary in specific cases. However, the use of chemical restraint may introduce analytical variations. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of sedation with butorphanol, midazolam, ketamine and dexmedetomidine on haematological, biochemical and coagulation parameters (prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and fibrinogen), as well as thromboelastography in adult healthy New Zeal

The impact of trauma exposure on psychiatric symptoms and treatment of eating disorders in adolescents.

Potentially traumatic experiences are associated with eating disorders (ED). This study characterizes trauma exposures in a clinical adolescent ED population, considering types and impact on clinical course. Adolescents admitted for inpatient or partial hospitalization ED treatment completed ED, anxiety and depression questionnaires at intake and discharge. At intake, a Trauma Screener was completed, and if positive, the Childhood Posttraumatic Symptom Scale (CPSS-5-SR) was also completed. Participants were grouped based on number of trauma exposures reported (none, single, multiple), and line

Relief Following Chronic Stress Augments Spreading Depolarization Susceptibility in Familial Hemiplegic Migraine Mice.

Cortical spreading depolarization (CSD) is the electrophysiological substrate of migraine aura, and a putative trigger of trigeminovascular activation and migraine headache. Many migraineurs report stress or relief after a stress triggers an attack. We tested whether various stress conditions might modulate CSD susceptibility and whether this is dependent on genetic factors. Male and female wild type and familial hemiplegic migraine type1 (FHM1) knock-in mice heterozygous for the S218L missense mutation were subjected to acute or chronic stress, or chronic stress followed by relief (36 h). Association of stress-sensitive mid-insula activity with alcohol drinking and negative affect-like behavior during abstinence in mice.

Stress is central to many neuropsychiatric conditions, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Stress influences alcohol initiation, escalation, progression to AUD, and relapse. Identifying stress-activated neurocircuits and individual variability in these responses is critical for developing new AUD treatment targets. This study investigates the relationship between adult stress response and AUD hyperkatifeia-a prolonged negative emotional state in protracted abstinence. In C57BL/6J mice, repeated restraint stress did not alter ethanol consumption but heightened aversive behavior during abstine

Comparative Evaluation of Corticosterone Administration, Chronic Restraint Stress, and Their Combination for Depression-like Behavioral and Molecular Alterations in Mice: A Multi-Domain Assessment.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) involves dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, neuroinflammation, serotonergic dysfunction, and impaired neurotrophic signaling. Whether combining corticosterone (CORT) with chronic restraint stress (CRS) produces a more comprehensive depression-like phenotype than either model alone remains unexplored. Male C57BL/6N mice were assigned to four groups-Sham (n = 7), CORT (20 mg/kg s.c.; n = 7), CRS (3 h/day; n = 7), and CORT + CRS (C+C; n = 8)-and evaluated by behavioral tests, hippocampal qRT-PCR, Western blot, LC-MS/MS metabolomics, and immun

Pre-gestational restraint stress affects reproductive outcomes in adult rats by modulating ovarian and uterine function.

The impact of gestational stress on reproductive outcomes is well-established, but the effects of pre-gestational stress remain inconclusive. Using female Wistar rats, we demonstrated that pre-gestational stress negatively affects fertility and pregnancy outcomes. The rats were subjected to restraint stress (RS) for 15 days, with 3 h of stress each day, before mating. The RS group exhibited higher levels of corticosterone and prolactin, along with lower levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), indicating a successful stress model. Stressed rats showed reduced fertility and fecundity indic

Distinct mechanisms of transcriptomic habituation to repeated stress in the mouse hippocampus.

Chronic stress is a risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders, making the ability to adapt to repeated stress a crucial determinant of mental health. It remains unclear whether repeated stress exposure leads to habituation or new adaptive responses. Here, we investigated how the transcriptomic response to acute restraint stress changes - in the mouse ventral hippocampus - with repeated exposure. Using bulk RNA-seq across multiple timepoints, we observed widespread transcriptional habituation: stress-induced gene expression was blunted without the emergence of new response profiles or changes
