A Novel Case of Cerebral Diplopia Secondary to a Posterior Parietal Cortex Ischemic Infarct: Proposal of a Mechanism of Generation of Polyopia Due to Convergence Insufficiency.

All reported cases of cerebral polyopia in the literature are associated solely with occipital lobe disease, as seen with ischemic infarcts, … PPC [Formula: see text] frontal eye field (FEF) [Formula: see text] paramedian midbrain and pontine reticular formation leading to convergence insufficiency, which leads to horizontal diplopia. The evidence ranging from tracer studies in macaque monkeys to functional MRI (fMRI) studies in patients with convergence insufficiency is presented to bolster our hypothesis. …

A Brainstem-Spinal Circuit Controlling Nocifensive Behavior.

Response to danger needs to be rapid and appropriate. In humans, nocifensive behaviors often precede conscious pain perception. Much is known about local spinal cord circuits for simple reflexive responses, but the mechanisms underlying more complex behaviors remain poorly understood. We now describe a brainstem circuit that controls escape responses to select noxious stimuli. Tracing experiments characterized a highly interconnected excitatory circuit involving the dorsal spinal cord, parabrachial nucleus (PBNl), and reticular formation (MdD). A combination of chemogenetic, optogenetic, and g…

Specific populations of basal ganglia output neurons target distinct brain stem areas while collateralizing throughout the diencephalon.

Basal ganglia play a central role in regulating behavior, but the organization of their outputs to other brain areas is incompletely underst … luding the motor and intralaminar thalamus as well as the pedunculopontine nucleus and the midbrain reticular formation. These findings establish that SNr signaling is organized as dense, parallel outputs to specific brain stem targets concurrent with extensive collateral branches that encompass the majority of SNr axonal boutons.

Anaesthetic implications of hyperekplexia--'startle disease'.

This report describes anaesthesia for consanguineous siblings with the rare genetic condition hyperekplexia. This condition is also known as 'stiff baby syndrome' or 'startle disease'. Hyperekplexia can present in major and minor forms and is caused by a mutation in chromosome 5 which results in a defect in the alpha-1 subunit of the inhibitory glycine receptors in the caudal pontine reticular formation leading to neuronal hyperexcitability. The patients present with a potentially life-threatening exaggerated startle reflex. Life-threatening spasms may be terminated by forced flexion of the he…

Sympathetic skin response: a decade later.

Sympathetic skin response (SSR) is a simple, reproducible test of function of a polysynaptic reflex having diverse afferents, a common efferent pathway through the spinal cord, pre and post-ganglionic sympathetic fibers and with sweat glands as effectors. The reflex is co-ordinated in the posterior hypothalamus or upper brainstem reticular formation. It has been used in a variety of disorders of peripheral and central nervous system. Methodology, possible anatomic substrates, changes in SSR in various diseases and their correlation with clinical features of dysautonomia, bed side tests for dys…

Neuropathological background of oculomotor disturbances in olivopontocerebellar atrophy with special reference to slow saccade.

Neuropathological findings responsible for abnormal eye movements in olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) are reported. The material consists … tion of the zona reticulata of the substantia nigra, the superior colliculus and the pontomedullary reticular formation. A review of the literature showed that all the cases of spino-cerebellar degeneration with slow saccade were hereditary OPCA, and that almost all cases had primary nigral degeneration. The neuropathological background of the oculomotor disturbances …

Effects of microinjection of a cholinergic agonist into the locus coeruleus on the gain of vestibulospinal reflexes in decerebrate cats.

An electron microscope study of lymphatic tissue in runt disease.

The thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes were studied in runt disease induced by a graft of intravenously injected homologous splenic cells into newborn rats and mice. Adult Long-Evans cells (70 x 10(6)) were injected into Sprague-Dawley rats. Adult DBA cells (7 x 10(6)) were injected into C57BL/6 mice. Runted rats were sacrificed at 14 to 28 days of age; mice at 10 to 20 days. The thymic cortex is depleted of small lymphocytes. Those remaining are severely damaged and phagocytized. Evidence of damage includes swelling of mitochondria, myelin figure formation, margination of chromatin, and sharp an

What Time Is It? It Is 8 and 1/2 Time: A Rare Case of Ischemic Stroke Consistent With Eight-and-a-Half Syndrome.

Eight-and-a-half syndrome is a rare neuro-ophthalmic syndrome characterized by conjugate horizontal gaze palsy, ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and ipsilateral facial nerve palsy. It results from a lesion affecting the paramedian pontine reticular formation, the medial longitudinal fasciculus, and the abducens nucleus of the same side, at the level of the lower pons. We present a case of a 49-year-old man with 2-week diplopia and 3-day right-sided facial droop, drooling, and dysarthria. CT angiography of the head and neck revealed atherosclerotic disease, with decreased caliber of th…

Geotropic ocular deviation with skew and absence of saccade in Creutzfelt-Jakob disease.

Three patients with Creutzfelt-Jakob disease (CJD) showed characteristic ocular manifestations. The head was turned left or right with the e … cens, vestibular and perihypoglossal nuclei, medial longitudinal fasciculus and para-median pontine reticular formation were preserved. These patients had a supranuclear disorder, probably caused by combined disruption of the direct and indirect frontal eye field to the brainstem pathways plus impairment of the superior colliculus-mediated saccade pathways.

A hindbrain segmental scaffold specifying neuronal location in the adult goldfish, Carassius auratus.

The vertebrate hindbrain develops as a series of well-defined neuroepithelial segments or rhombomeres. While rhombomeres are visible in all vertebrate embryos, generally there is not any visible segmental anatomy in the brains of adults. Teleost fish are exceptional in retaining a rhombomeric pattern of reticulospinal neurons through embryonic, larval, and adult periods. We use this feature to map more precisely the segmental imprint in the reticular and motor basal hindbrain of adult goldfish. Analysis of serial sections cut in three planes and computer reconstructions of retrogradely labeled
