Transgenic rats with the P23H mutation in rhodopsin exhibit increased susceptibility to light damage, compared with normal animals. It is known that light-induced retinal damage requires repetitive bleaching of rhodopsin and that photoreceptor cell loss is by apoptosis; however, the underlying molecular mechanism(s) leading to photoreceptor cell death are still unknown. Photoproducts, such as all-trans retinal or other retinoid metabolites, released by the extensive bleaching of rhodopsin could lead to activation of degenerative processes, especially in animals genetically predisposed to retin…

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorders that cause progressive vision loss. Gene therapies based on adeno-associated virus vectors have achieved notable progress in IRDs, but their limited packaging capacity and potential long-term toxicity constrain broader applications. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have been clinically validated as nonviral delivery vehicles for nucleic acid therapeutics. Previous ocular studies have primarily focused on strategies such as surface modification and polyethylene glycol lipid engineering, which have p…

We describe a 45-year-old man with bilateral bifoveate retinas, an exceptionally rare human phenotype. Spectral-domain OCT demonstrated two distinct foveal pits per eye: a deep central fovea and a shallower temporal fovea with grade 1 foveal hypoplasia features. OCT-angiography revealed paired foveal avascular zones bilaterally. Unlike previously reported cases, which were predominantly unilateral and nonfunctional, both temporal foveae in this case show well-developed architecture closely resembling the bifoveate visual system of Anolis lizards. We propose this represents a rare partial failu…

GABA is the major inhibitory amino acid in the central nervous system (CNS), and its homeostasis is crucial for inhibitory/excitatory balance. Its reuptake is mediated by GABA transporters, including type 1 (GAT-1), a high-affinity GABA plasma membrane transporter. Ethanol (EtOH) consumption enhances GABA inhibitory effects; however, the impact of acute EtOH exposure on GABAergic function during development remains to be understood. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether acute EtOH exposure modulates GABA transport in chicken retina, a well-established model for investigating neurochemical st…
