Anti-VEGF therapy for central retinal vein occlusion caused by tuberculosis-associated uveitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB)-associated uveitis presents periphlebitis, occasionally causing central retinal vascular occlusion (CRVO). Intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) is an effective treatment for CRVO, which improves macular edema (ME) by reducing vascular permeability and prevents progression of retinal nonperfusion in CRVO. We report a case of CRVO due to TB-associated uveitis, which initially remitted by repeated IVR as an adjunct to anti-TB therapy and systemic corticosteroids, but subsequently led to severe vitreous hemorrhage (VH). CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old man was

Central retinal vein obstruction in a neonate occurring during laser photocoagulation treatment for retinopathy of prematurity.

A premature infant who developed central retinal vein obstruction in one eye during laser therapy for high-risk prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity is described. Systemic investigations were done to detect the cause of such an acute and unreported episode. Acquired deficiency of protein C levels was detected. Premature infants are at risk of thromboembolic episodes due to deranged hematological parameters. Acquired protein C deficiency possibly precipitated acute retinal vein occlusion during laser therapy in this infant. Intravitreal bevacizumab was used successfully to treat the episode …

Case report of optic disc drusen with simultaneous peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage and central retinal vein occlusion.

A 52-year-old Chinese gentleman presented with right eye floaters and photopsia over one week. His visual acuities were 20/20 bilaterally. Posterior segment examination showed a right eye swollen optic disc and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) associated with an area of subretinal hemorrhage adjacent to the optic disc. Fundus fluorescein (FA) and indocyanine green angiographies (ICGA) of the right eye did not demonstrate choroidal neovascularization (CNV), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), or retinal ischemia. Ultrasound B-scan revealed optic disc drusen (ODD). In view of good visi…

Bilateral central retinal artery occlusion and vein occlusion complicated by severe choroidopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Severe retinal vascular occlusions resulting in blindness is a rare occurrence in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Herein, we report a case of a 33-year-old female who developed combined central retinal artery occlusion, retinal vein occlusion, and choroidopathy and rapidly became completely blind in both eyes within a week. The electroretinogram revealed a severely attenuated a-wave and b-wave, indicating a profound dysfunction of both choroidal and retinal circulation, respectively. The current case demonstrates objectively the functional impact of severe choroidopathy in SL…

Follow up by colour Doppler imaging of 102 patients with retinal vein occlusion over 1 year.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is one of the most frequent ocular vascular diseases and leads to severe vision impairment. Colour Doppler imaging (CDI) is the first method which allows distinct evaluation of arterial and venous velocities in RVO. CDI is valuable for diagnosis of RVO and shows the effects of isovolaemic haemodilution. Patients with RVO were monitored by CDI for 1 year in order to clarify venous and arterial involvement in the pathogenesis of this disease. METHODS: Patients with RVO were monitored prospectively for 1 year with clinical examinations, fluorescein an…

Activated protein C resistance--low incidence in glaucomatous optic disc haemorrhage and central retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: Activated protein C (APC) resistance has recently been reported as conferring a sevenfold increase in the risk of venous thrombosis. It is linked to a genetic mutation in the factor V gene which occurs commonly (about 2% to 4% of the community have the mutation). Glaucoma patients with nerve fibre layer (NFL) haemorrhages on the optic disc and patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) were tested for APC resistance to determine if there was an association. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with glaucomatous NFL haemorrhages and 23 patients with CRVO were tested. The CRVO cases…
