The elderly population is increasing and the response of the society was to provide them with services directed to them to cope with their needs. One of the oldest solutions is the retirement home, providing housing and permanent assistance for the elderly. Furthermore, most of the retirement homes are inhabited by multiple elderly people, thus creating a community of people who are somewhat related in age and medical issues. The ambient assisted living (AAL) area tries to solve some of the elderly issues by producing technological products, some of them dedicated to elderly homes. One of the …

BACKGROUND: The global population is undergoing rapid aging, making the promotion of successful aging a pressing public health priority. However, large-scale, longitudinal evidence examining the strength and consistency of the association between visual impairment and successful aging across diverse populations remains limited.
METHODS: The study displays and analyses the data extracted from six longitudinal cohorts, namely the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS), the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLOSA), the Health and R…

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. The C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index (CTI) integrates inflammation and insulin resistance. However, research on cumulative effects and longitudinal patterns of CTI combined with body shape indices for CVD risk assessment is limited. We examined association of cumulative CTI-CVAI (CumCTI-CVAI) exposure and longitudinal patterns with new-onset CVD, heart disease, and stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese adults.
METHODS: Data were from the CHARLS. A two-stage design (cross-sectional screening + longi

BACKGROUND: Identifying risk factors associated with the Motoric Cognitive Risk (MCR) syndrome (a pre-dementia syndrome) can assist in developing risk reduction strategies and interventions to delay progression to dementia. Tailored interventions require comparisons of high- and middle-income countries to determine if the same or different risk factors should be targeted. We examined risk factors associated with MCR in seven Health and Retirement Studies with harmonized measures.
METHODS: Data from adults aged ≥65 years (n = 20,036, mean age 71.2(SD 6.2)-80.1(SD 4.1)) from the U.S. Health and…

When older adults face age-related life challenges, anticipating what to expect and how to access potential coping strategies can both prevent and provide the possibility of easier recovery from crises. Aging-Related Preparation (ARP) is defined as the continuum of thoughts and activities about how to age well, often beginning with the awareness of age-related changes, or the anticipation of retirement, and concluding with specifying end-of-life wishes. In the current paper, we introduce the concept of ARP and related formulations regarding plans for aging well, describe both predictors and ou…

OBJECTIVES: We offer new insights on how older adults in the United States navigate the aftermath of gray divorce (i.e., divorce that occurs among adults aged 50+) by describing their living arrangements upon divorce and tracking the stability of these configurations over time. Living arrangements are important to decipher because they are linked to health, well-being, and longevity.
METHODS: Using data from the 1998-2014 Health and Retirement Study, we uncovered patterns of U.S. older adult living arrangements upon divorce (N = 1,057), distinguishing among those who lived alone, lived with o…

The long-term effects of repetitive head trauma on the brain have often been studied in boxers and American football players. The medical literature on this topic was reviewed in order to compare the findings related to boxing with those related to football. The evidence gathered from this review indicates that there are significant differences between the clinical and neuropathological descriptions of the chronic brain damage reported in retired boxers compared to those reported in retired football players. Differing biomechanics of head impacts in the two sports may help explain the differen

Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects an increasing proportion of workers, a trend that will compound with the ageing of the workforce. It is therefore important to consider DM in the workplace context. There is an interrelationship between DM and work. Indeed dysglycemia is associated with a greater risk of work accidents and long-term DM complications. On the other side work conditions can affect DM's stability. The consequences are absenteeism, presenteeism, early retirement or even disability with significant socio-economic costs. To keep patients with DM into the workforce, the evaluation of the…

BACKGROUND: Delays in bone age, the onset of puberty, and skeletal growth in gymnasts could be, in part, the reason for an interest in gymnastics, rather than being the result of vigorous exercise. We hypothesized that short stature and delayed bone age are present at the start of gymnastics, and training delays growth, producing short stature, even after retirement.
METHODS: Sitting height and leg length were measured in 83 active female gymnasts, 42 retired gymnasts, and 154 healthy control subjects. Results were expressed as age-specific SD scores (mean +/- SEM).
RESULTS: In the cross-sec…

Sleep and mental health are important aspects of human health that work concurrently. However, sleep and mental health disorders are often overlooked and undiagnosed in sport due to the negative stigma associated with them. Evidence suggests that athletes are disproportionately affected by mental health issues and sleep problems. Internal and external pressures contribute to psychological distress. Variable competition times, travel and stress are detrimental to sleep quality. Retirement from sport can deteriorate sleep and psychological wellbeing, particularly for those who retired involuntar…

In-vivo measurements of lead concentrations in calcaneus (mainly trabecular bone) and tibia (mainly cortical bone) were performed by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) in 70 active and 30 retired lead smelter workers who had long-term exposure to lead. Comparison was made with 31 active and 10 retired truck assembly workers who had no known occupational exposure to lead. After physical examination, all participants provided blood and urine samples and answered a computerized questionnaire. Since 1950, blood lead has been determined repeatedly in lead workers at the smelter, which made it possible to cal
