We examined the senses of smell and taste in 240 patients with verified hypersensitivity reactions of the respiratory tract. Olfactometry was performed according to Elsberg and Levy's method and followed by electrogustometry. We have evaluated the effectiveness of cetirizine in 40 patients (25 males and 15 females, mean age 32.8 yrs) suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis due to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. Patients were treated for 30 days with oral cetirizine (10 mg once a day) and had to report the severity of the symptoms considered (sneezing, runny nose, itching and congestion) on daily card. During the study no other medication was allowed. After 4 weeks symptoms were statistically improved and this beneficial effect increased at the end of the treatment. No side effects were reported. DESIGN: Blood cadmium levels were measured in 30 patients with allergic rhinitis, 30 patients with nonallergic rhinitis, and 16 normal control subjects using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Correction of a saddle nose deformity due to atrophic rhinitis is a formidable task. The thick and puckered skin secondary to long standing disease makes the creation of a dorsal subdermal pocket difficult. On the one hand, these patients tolerate synthetic implants poorly and on the other they show an unusually high rate of absorption of autologous bone graft. Our experience of treating 15 patients with saddle nose deformity secondary to atrophic rhinitis is presented.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study, the antihistamine acrivastine, was used over prolonged periods for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. After the initial treatment period of 10 days, 8 mg acrivastine three times daily was significantly superior to placebo in controlling the symptoms of sneezing, itchy nose, running nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes and itchy throat. To examine the sources of IgG in nasal secretions, nasal provocation tests with histamine (H) and methacholine (MC) were performed on 22 subjects. Nasal lavages were assayed for IgG, total protein, albumin (Alb), nonsecretory IgA (nonsIgA), and secretory IgA (sIgA).
