Teratogenicity and developmental toxicity of carbon monoxide in protein-deficient mice.

Experiments were carried out to determine the teratogenicity and developmental toxicity of carbon monoxide (CO) in mice fed protein-deficient diets. Pregnant CD-1 mice were fed 27 (control), 16, 8, or 4% protein diets throughout gestation and each group was exposed to 0 (control), 65, 125, 250, or 500 ppm of CO from gestation days 8-18. The CO exposure was continuous except for daily watering, feeding or cage changing. The animals were killed on gestation day 18. Pregnancy status of the dams was examined. Fetuses were examined for gross and skeletal malformations. The percentages of dead or re

EEG oscillations and related brain generators of phonation phases in long utterances.

While the role of brain rhythms in respiratory and speech motor control has been mainly explored during brief utterances, the specific involvement of brain rhythms in the transition of regulating subglottic pressure phases which are concomitant to specific muscle activation during prolonged phonation remains unexplored. This study investigates whether power spectral variations of the electroencephalogram brain rhythms are related specifically to prolonged phonation phases. High-density EEG and surface EMG were recorded in nineteen healthy participants while they repeatedly produced the syllabl

Estimating Lung Volume During Cough: A Comparison of Respiratory Calibration Tasks and Methodologies.

PURPOSE: Effective cough function requires sufficient respiratory support. To estimate lung volume, respiratory inductance plethysmography measures circumferential changes of the rib cage (RC) and abdomen (AB) during various behaviors, such as coughing. During speech breathing, the accuracy of these estimates is influenced by calibration tasks and analysis methods. Measurement error can introduce bias and confound results, yet the optimal approach for assessing lung volume during cough remains unclear. METHOD: Twenty participants with Parkinson's disease (Mage = 69 years; M disease duration =

MRI-compatible abdomen phantom to mimic respiratory-triggered organ movement while performing needle-based interventions.

PURPOSE: In vivo studies are often required to prove the functionality and safety of medical devices. Clinical trials are costly and complex, adding to ethical scrutiny of animal testing. Anthropomorphic phantoms with versatile functionalities can overcome these issues with regard to medical education or an effective development of assistance systems during image-guided interventions (e.g., robotics, navigation/registration algorithms). In this work, an MRI-compatible and customizable motion phantom is presented to mimic respiratory-triggered organ movement as well as human anatomy. METHODS:

Respiratory distress in small animals: Pathophysiology and clinical approach.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress is a common reason for animals to present to the emergency room. An understanding of respiratory physiology is helpful to facilitate accurate localization of the patient's source of respiratory distress. This knowledge will aid implementation of more appropriate therapies. PHYSIOLOGY/PATHOPHYSIOLOGY SUMMARY: Respiratory distress can occur secondary to lesions at any location of the respiratory system. Diseases affecting different portions of the respiratory track (eg, upper airway, lower airways, parenchymal, or the pleural space) lead to distinguishing clinic

The NeoAPACHE Study Protocol I: Assessment of the Radiographic Pulmonary Area and Long-Term Respiratory Function in Newborns With Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

In newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), the radiographic lung area is correlated with functional residual capacity (FRC) and represents an alternative method to estimate lung hypoplasia. In a cohort of newborn CDH survivors, we retrospectively evaluated the relationship between radiographic lung area measured on the 1st day of life and long-term respiratory function. As a secondary analysis, we compared radiographic lung areas and respiratory function between patients undergoing fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) and patients managed expectantly (non-FETO). Thoraco-abdominal asymmetry and asynchrony in congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) consists of an incomplete formation of the diaphragm and the subsequent herniation of abdominal bowels. Diaphragmatic defect can be repaired by primary closure or placing a patch. Respiratory follow up usually focuses on spirometric and clinical evaluation. The aim of the study was to assess thoraco-abdominal volumes in CDH patients and to verify whether the action of the diaphragm on the chest wall is altered leading to an asymmetric and asynchronous expansion of the different thoracoabdominal compartments. Biomechanical evaluation of predictive parameters of progression in adolescent isthmic spondylolisthesis: a computer modeling and simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic incidence, sacral slope and slip percentage have been shown to be important predicting factors for assessing the risk of progression of low- and high-grade spondylolisthesis. Biomechanical factors, which affect the stress distribution and the mechanisms involved in the vertebral slippage, may also influence the risk of progression, but they are still not well known. The objective was to biomechanically evaluate how geometric sacral parameters influence shear and normal stress at the lumbosacral junction in spondylolisthesis. METHODS: A finite element model of a low-grade L5

Tuberculous spondylitis and paravertebral abscess formation after kyphoplasty: a case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To report a patient with spinal tuberculosis (TB) and paravertebral abscess formation after kyphoplasty of L1. The literature is reviewed, and diagnostic options are discussed. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Kyphoplasty is a well-established procedure in the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures and metastatic tumors of the vertebrae. Although complication rates are low, there is evidence for an increased risk of serious local infections after kyphoplasty in patients with any history of systemic infection. Spinal TB accounts for 2% of all TB cases

Pulmonary function and spinal cord injury.

Injury to the cervical and upper thoracic spinal cord disrupts function of inspiratory and expiratory muscles, as reflected by reduction in spirometric and lung volume parameters and static mouth pressures. In association, subjects with tetraplegia have decreased chest wall and lung compliance, increased abdominal wall compliance, and rib cage stiffness with paradoxical chest wall movements, all of which contribute to an increase in the work of breathing. Expiratory muscle function is more compromised than inspiratory muscle function among subjects with tetraplegia and high paraplegia, which c

Cardiorespiratory-based sleep staging in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea.

A cardiorespiratory-based automatic sleep staging system for subjects with sleep-disordered breathing is described. A simplified three-state system is used: Wakefulness (W), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (R), and non-REM sleep (S). The system scores the sleep stages in standard 30-s epochs. A number of features associated with the epoch RR-intervals, an inductance plethysmography estimate of rib cage respiratory effort, and an electrocardiogram-derived respiration (EDR) signal were investigated. A subject-specific quadratic discriminant classifier was trained, randomly choosing 20% of the sub

Risk factors for construct/implant related complications following primary posterior hemivertebra resection: Study on 116 cases with more than 2 years' follow-up in one medical center.

BACKGROUND: Posterior hemivertebra resection has become a safe and effective procedure for congenital scoliosis due to hemivertebra. However, there are still complications following primary posterior hemivertebra resection in recent reports. No risk factors associated with construct/implant related complications were identified so far. The purpose of this study is to analyze complications following primary posterior hemivertebra resection and to investigate the possible risk factors associated with construct/implant related complications in congenital scoliosis cases due to hemivertebra. Comparative morphological study of the liver in immature and mature local breed cat ( Felis catus ) in Iraq.

BACKGROUND: The cat liver is a crucial organ located in the upper abdomen, which is important for digestion and various body functions. It is shaped to fit within the rib cage and moves readily with breathing because of its connection with the diaphragm. AIM: This study aimed to observe the anatomical differences that occur in young and mature domestic cats (Felis catus) and the impact of environmental changes (represented by environmental pollution resulting from the accumulation of pollutants in recent years in the country) evident in the anatomical findings of the current generation of thi

[Moroccan experience in the surgical treatment of multiple hydatid cysts in the liver].

We studied 94 cases of multiple hydatid cysts in the liver, over a period of ten years. These cases accounted for 31.3% of all cases of hydatid cysts treated surgically in the Visceral Surgery Department of Avicenne Military Hospital in Marrakech. In these patients, who were often young and male, the principal symptoms were pain in the right hypochondrium (71.3%) and hepatomegaly (24.5%). In about 10% of cases, the cysts were discovered by chance. Ultrasound and CT scans facilitated diagnosis and determination of the position of the cysts, with reliability reaching 100% for CT scans. The cysts

Thoracic range of motion, stability, and correlation to imaging-determined degeneration.

OBJECT The degenerative process of the spinal column results in instability followed by a progressive loss of segmental motion. Segmental degeneration is associated with intervertebral disc and facet changes, which can be quantified. Correlating this degeneration with clinical segmental motion has not been investigated in the thoracic spine. The authors sought to determine if imaging-determined degeneration would correlate with native range of motion (ROM) or the change in ROM after decompressive procedures, potentially guiding clinical decision making in the setting of spine trauma or followi
