Successful snakebite treatment in three juvenile African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) with polyvalent antivenom: a Namibian case report.

This article reports the first documented treatment of venomous snakebite with a polyvalent snake antivenom from the South African Institute for Medical Research in endangered African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus). Three juvenile male animals (6.5 months of age) showed clinical signs after being bitten by an unidentified venomous snake. The signs included loss of appetite, disorientation, impaired locomotion, excessive facial swelling, profuse salivation, reduced respiratory effort and an apparent depressed mental state. Intravenous treatment with isotonic Ringer lactate solution, hetastarch 6% an

Vagus stimulation effects during various doses of fluid infusion in dogs.

Stimulation of caudal and cranial ends of vagi in vagotomised chloralose-urethane anaesthetised dogs with 7.5V, 30Cps pulses of 2 msec width after 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ml/kg body weight infusion dose of Ringer-Locke solution caused well known effects on heart rate, BP, amplitude of peripheral blood pressure waves, amplitude and frequency of respiration and amplitude of ECG waves. The vagal stimulation effects did not appear to be related to volume of fluid infused into circulation except that caudal end stimulation effect on QRS amplitude was prominent during higher infusion doses while its e

In vitro effects of some herbs used in Egyptian traditional medicine on viability of protoscolices of hydatid cysts.

The present work evaluated the effects of alcoholic extracts of salvia (Salvia officinalis), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), and 2 pure compounds (thymol and menthol) on the viability of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices in vitro. Four different concentrations of each extract (2,500, 1,500, 1,000, and 500 µg/ml) and 3 different concentrations each of thymol and menthol (50, 10, and 1 µg/ml) were used. Concentration of 2,500 µg/ml of both extracts showed a significant protoscolicidal activity on the 6th day. Complete loss of viability of protoscolices occurred with 500 µg/ml concentration of both

Bicarbonate-Based Solution for the Management of Established Acute Kidney Injury: A Pilot Open-Label Observation Study.

Background Administration of intravenous (IV) solutions constitutes a key component of acute kidney injury (AKI) management. However, the optimal IV fluid solution in the setting of AKI remains uncertain. In this study, we assessed whether the use of bicarbonate-containing solution in patients with established AKI is associated with early renal recovery as compared to bicarbonate-free solutions. Methods We performed an open-label observational pilot study in 59 patients with established AKI. IV fluid solutions that were used include bicarbonate-based solution with low chloride content (80 mEq/

Whole-bowel irrigation for mechanical colon cleansing.

The physiology, solution composition, indications, efficacy, and safety of whole-bowel irrigation (WBI) for mechanical bowel cleansing are reviewed. WBI with isotonic electrolyte solutions produces diarrhea when the infusion rate exceeds the capacity of the intestine to distend and absorb the solution. A number of solutions are used for WBI, including 0.9% sodium chloride, balanced electrolyte solutions, lactated Ringer's, mannitol, and electrolyte solutions containing polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG). WBI solution administration rates vary from 15-90 mL/min, by oral ingestion or nasogastric tub

Mitigating hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury with polyethylene glycol-enriched Ringer's lactate fluid: insights from an isolated perfused rat model.

BACKGROUND: Cold ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a multifactorial process detrimental to liver graft function during liver transplantation (LT). Although flushing hepatic grafts prior to reperfusion have been well explored, the optimal graft rinse solution to prevent cold IR injury remains largely undefined. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a new rinse solution combining polyethylene glycol PM 35,000 Da (PEG35) with lactated solution (RLS) could mitigate cold IR injury in Wistar rats. METHODS: Livers were isolated, preserved for 24 h and flushed immediately before ex vivo rep

Fluid resuscitation using the intraosseous route: infusion with lactated Ringer's and hetastarch.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of the intraosseous (IO) route for fluid resuscitation remains uncertain. This study compares IO infusion rates and estimated volume expansion using clinically relevant infusion pressures with lactated Ringer's (LR) and hetastarch (HES). METHODS: IO needles were placed in the sternum or tibia for infusion of HES and LR in 8 Yorkshire pigs. Pressures were recorded at variable flow rates and linear regression used to identify flow rates at 100 and 400 mm Hg. Volume expansion was calculated for a 10-minute infusion. RESULTS: Mean LR flow rates (mL x min(-1)) were 24

Physiologic response to hemorrhagic shock depends on rate and means of hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Traditional models of shock classify severity based on the volume of hemorrhage. Clinically, hemorrhage occurs at a variable rate, usually slowing as blood pressure drops; however most animal experimental models use a constant rate of hemorrhage. Our hypothesis was that rapid bleeding followed by slower bleeding using a fixed total volume would result in a greater physiologic insult. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Yorkshire pigs (S and S Farms, Ranchita, CA) underwent placement of jugular and femoral catheters after anesthesia. All animals were hemorrhaged a total of 30 mL/kg. The animals

Comparison between intermittent and continuous measurement of cardiac output after acute normovolemic hemodilution in pigs.

Continuous cardiac output (CO) and mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) determined through the pulmonary artery catheter may be helpful in monitoring hemodynamic conditions in critically ill patients. This study aimed to evaluate CO and SvO2 in a model of acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH), analyzing the accuracy of the continuous versus intermittent method for CO and SvO2 measurement in pigs. Twenty-three pigs were enrolled to three groups: control, ANH with 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES), or ANH with lactated Ringer's (LR) solution. After hemodilution, we showed that SvO2 was reduced in bo

Nutritional support for treatment of hepatic lipidosis in a llama.

A 3-year-old female llama that was 3 months into her first lactation and 10 weeks pregnant was evaluated for anorexia of 24 hours' duration. On physical examination, the llama was in lateral recumbency, bradycardic, tachypneic, and hyperthermic. Palpation per rectum confirmed the presence of a possible dry fecal mass in the spiral colon. A tissue biopsy specimen of the liver was obtained, and histologic examination revealed moderate diffuse lipid accumulation within the hepatocytes. Lactated Ringer's solution was administered for rehydration, and partial parenteral nutrition was then initiated…

Regional flow during experimental hemorrhage and crystalloid resuscitation: persistence of low flow to the splanchnic organs.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND METHODS. Rapid changes in cardiac output (CO) and organ perfusion occur with hemorrhagic shock and fluid resuscitation. To assess regional alterations of flow, 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats were subjected to hemorrhagic shock and crystalloid resuscitation under halothane anesthesia. Polyethylene microspheres were injected before and after hemorrhage and after resuscitation. At sacrifice, brain, lungs, heart, liver, intestine, spleen and kidneys were harvested, weighed and radioactivity counted. Changes in mean arterial pressure, oxygen consumption, organ flow and CO we

Pericardial pressure attenuates release of atriopeptin in volume-expanded dogs.

The role of the pericardium in the release of atriopeptin (AP) was examined, utilizing two separate protocols, in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized dogs. Protocol I consisted of an experimental group (9 dogs), in which the pericardium was incised to allow instrumentation and reapproximated, and a control group (6 dogs), in which the pericardium was left undisturbed. In the experimental group, mean right atrial pressure (Pra) was elevated from a control value of 1.8 +/- 0.9 mmHg (mean +/- SD) to 8.3 +/- 0.8 mmHg for 40 min by volume expansion with isoncotic, lactated Ringer solution. After this per

[Vascular loading in the first 24 hours following severe head injuries].

The main goal at the acute phase of head injury is to prevent a decrease in blood pressure, which promotes cerebral ischemia. Volume loading is therefore frequently indicated. A normal or increased plasma osmolarity should be maintained. Thus hypotonic fluids should be avoided. Hyperglycaemia is also a risk factor for brain injury and glucose use has to be restricted in the first hours after trauma. Isotonic saline 0.9% is the first solution to be infused. Lactated Ringer solutions are mildly hypotonic as approximately 114 mL of free water is contained in each litre of the solution. Isotonic c

Crystalloid or colloid resuscitation of uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock after moderate splenic injury.

Using a standardized moderate splenic injury (MSI) model of uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock, we studied the effect of vigorous crystalloid or colloid fluid resuscitation on the hemodynamic response and survival time in rats. The animals were randomized into 6 groups: group 1 (n = 8) sham-operated, group 2 (n = 10) MSI untreated, group 3 (n = 10) MSI treated with 41.5 mL/kg Ringer's lactate (large-volume Ringer's lactate [LVRL]), group 4 (n = 10) MSI treated with 5 mL/kg 7.5% NaCl (hypertonic saline [HTS]), group 5 (n = 10) MSI treated with 7.5 mL/kg hydroxyethyl starch (HES-7.5), group 6 (n = 1
