Background/Aim: Third molar impaction with the consequent root resorption of second molars often creates complexities in treatment planning and execution. In the past, the root canal treatment (RCT) of second molars was required in these cases to avoid pulp necrosis and infection. The aim of this paper is to report a surgical/retrograde approach for the maintenance of pulp vitality, proposed as retrograde vital pulp treatment (rVPT), in cases of asymptomatic or reversibly affected teeth with root resorptions caused by impacted adjacent teeth. Methods: A case report on the rVPT of two upper sec

Two cases are reported in which incomplete placement of 4 mm mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plug was performed unintentionally at the apical third of permanent immature teeth with open apex and apical periodontitis. As confirmed radiographically, there were gaps between MTA and dentinal walls along the MTA-dentin interface. After setting of MTA was confirmed, endodontic treatment was completed and access was sealed with composite resin. At 6 to 16 months follow-up examinations, formation of dentin in contact with the MTA surface, as well as apical closure and periapical healing were ideied r

AIM: To present a case report in which the pulp of two bilateral mandibular premolars with dens evaginatus were revascularized using a modified novel technique to avoid undesired crown discolouration.
SUMMARY: Recently, regeneration of necrotic pulps has become an alternative conservative treatment option for young permanent teeth with immature roots and is a subject of great interest in the field of endodontics. This novel procedure exploits the full potential of the pulp for dentine deposition and produces a stronger mature root that is better able to withstand the forces than can result in

The current clinical practice of endodontics includes the utilization of a variety of new technological advances and materials. The last comprehensive survey that compared treatment modalities used in endodontic practices was conducted in 1990. The purpose of the current survey was to determine the frequency with which these new endodontic technologies and materials are being used in endodontic practices today. An e-mail questionnaire was sent to the 636 active diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics with current e-mail addresses. Two hundred thirty-two diplomates responded for a respo

The effect of chelating solutions EDTA, EGTA and CDTA on human dentin adhesiveness and microleakage with 4 sealers (Sealer 26, Sealapex, N-Rickert and Endofill) was evaluated in vitro. Whether or not there was a mathematical correlation between the tests of adhesiveness and microleakage was also evaluated. A total of eighty maxillary and mandibular molars were used to test adhesiveness. After wearing of the occlusal surface to obtain a flat surface, the sealer was placed with an aluminum cylinder (10 mm x 6 mm). Adhesiveness was evaluated with a 4444 Instron universal testing machine. Microlea

Extracted human teeth were studied to evaluate three methods of removing gutta-percha and endodontic sealer from previously obturated canals. The results showed that: (1) Each method of removal left debris in the canals. (2) Significantly more debris remained in the apical third than in the middle or coronal thirds. Likewise, significantly more debris remained in the middle than in the coronal third. (3) Use of the GPX instruments enabled gutta-percha to be removed as effectively as the other methods. (4) Use of the GPX instruments required significantly less time for gutta-percha removal, com

This study is a retrospective analysis of the outcome of initial nonsurgical root canal treatment of teeth with open apices, obturated with mineral trioxide aggregate when no apical barrier existed. One hundred sixteen patients from a single private endodontic office were treated between 1999 and 2006. Treatments on 144 teeth were completed either in one (92/144) or two visits with an interim calcium hydroxide interappointment medication (52/144). Fifty-four percent (78/144) of the teeth were available for recall (60.3% one visit and 39.7% two visits). The maximum time to recall was 4.87 years

BACKGROUND: One of the main reasons for post endodontic pain is the polymicrobial intracanal flora that may survive the initial disinfection. A single antimicrobial agent might not provide adequate disinfection, and an antimicrobial combination such as triple antibiotic paste was tested to achieve this goal.
AIM: The study aimed to assess the efficacy of three intra-canal medicaments on post root canal preparation pain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty patients with single-rooted necrotic teeth and symptomatic apical periodontitis were randomly assigned to four treatment groups (n = 20). Their …

The aim was to evaluate the effects of different strategies on broken instrument removal and root fracture strength. After canal preparation of anterior single-rooted teeth, the samples were divided into one control group (n = 10) and six experimental groups (n = 15). A #25/.06 rotary file was broken at a length of 4 mm in the middle-third canal region in the experimental groups, and no instrument fractures were created in the control group. Access to the instrument was achieved with Gates-Glidden (GG) burs or ultrasonic tips. Dentin around the instrument was removed to create partial or full

INTRODUCTION: Subcutaneous emphysema (SCE) rarely occurs from endodontic treatment. Most reported cases of iatrogenic SCE occur in the cervicofacial region. Only a few cases have been reported of SCE extending into the mediastinum or orbital spaces. In the present report, we describe a concomitant occurrence of orbital, mediastinal, and cervicofacial SCE immediately after endodontic retreatment.
METHODS: A 33-year-old woman presented to the hospital with acute swelling of the right side of her face and neck. Earlier in the day, she began experiencing rapid swelling while undergoing endodontic

BACKGROUND: Flare-ups may occur after root canal treatment which consist of acute exacerbation of asymptomatic pulpal and/or periradicular pathologic condition. The causative factors of interappointment pain include mechanical, chemical or microbial irritation to the pulp or periradicular tissues. The potential role of microorganisms in interappointment pain is why the success of endodontic treatment depends on complete eradication of microorganisms capable of causing an intraradicular or extraradicular infection. This can be achieved by mechanical cleaning and shaping, in conjunction with irr

CONTEXT: Microorganisms in the root canal are the primary cause of pulpal and periapical disease. Although chemomechanical preparation reduces microbial load, complex canal anatomy hinders complete disinfection, necessitating intracanal medicaments like calcium hydroxide. However, residual medicament can compromise sealer penetration, dentin bonding, and increase apical microleakage, making its complete removal crucial. Techniques such as needle irrigation, sonic activation, passive ultrasonic irrigation, and XP-Endo Finisher have been proposed to improve their removal, while cone beam compute

BACKGROUND: Preservation of pulp vitality after pulpal exposure using vital pulp therapy (VPT) is now considered a predictable alternative to root canal treatment for normal or reversible pulpitis. With the growing demand for minimally invasive dentistry, indirect ceramic onlays offer good esthetic outcomes and durability with minimal tooth reduction.
CASE REPORT: A mandibular left first molar with deep caries was treated with direct pulp capping using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Following initial setting of MTA, immediate dentin sealing (IDS) was performed, and tooth was prepared for a
