Diversity, Co-Occurrence, and Nestedness Patterns of Sand Fly Species (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Two Rural Areas of Western Panamá.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis transmission in the New World is observed in areas with rich sand fly species' faunas. The diversity and composition of sand fly species can change in response to seasonal weather and land use changes. Here, we present results from a two-year-long study where we collected, using Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps, sand flies from two rural areas, Las Pavas (LP) and Trinidad de las Minas (T) in western Panamá. Over 710 trap-nights, we collected 16,156 sand flies from 15 genera and 35 species. We identified 34 species in T, and the most abundant species collect…

Adsorption of hexavalent chromium from water using manganese-aluminum coated sand: Kinetics, equilibrium, effect of pH and ionic strength.

Removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water was evaluated using a low-cost coated sand adsorbent for potential application in a flow-through filter system using permeable adsorption media. Manganese-aluminum coated sand (MACS) was investigated as a hybrid metal oxide based adsorbent due to the potential efficacy of manganese oxide and aluminum oxide for adsorption of Cr(VI) from water. Adsorbent characterization was performed using XRD, SEM/EDX, XPS and BET. Adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption capacity and kinetics. The effect of pH, common co-existing ions fou…

Biological effects of inhaled hydraulic fracturing sand dust. II. Particle characterization and pulmonary effects 30 d following intratracheal instillation.

Hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") is used in unconventional gas drilling to allow for the free flow of natural gas from rock. Sand in fracking fluid is pumped into the well bore under high pressure to enter and stabilize fissures in the rock. In the process of manipulating the sand on site, respirable dust (fracking sand dust, FSD) is generated. Inhalation of FSD is a potential hazard to workers inasmuch as respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis, and levels of FSD at drilling work sites have exceeded occupational exposure limits set by OSHA. In the absence of any information about its …

Impaired development of a miltefosine-resistant Leishmania infantum strain in the sand fly vectors Phlebotomus perniciosus and Lutzomyia longipalpis.

OBJECTIVES: To gain insight into the propagation of miltefosine (MIL) resistance in visceral leishmaniasis, this laboratory study explored development of resistant parasites with a defective miltefosine transporter (MT) in sand flies. METHODS: Infectivity, colonization of stomodeal valve and metacyclogenesis of a MIL-resistant (MIL-R) Leishmania infantum LEM3323 line with a defective MT were assessed in the natural sand fly vectors Phlebotomus perniciosus and Lutzomyia longipalpis. Given our recent description of partial drug dependency of the MT-deficient line, the impact of MIL pre-exposure…

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Recreational Waters and Beach Sand in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Background: Resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to commonly used antibiotics is linked to their ability to acquire and disseminate antimicrobial-resistant determinants in nature, and the marine environment may serve as a reservoir for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study determined the antibiotic sensitivity profile of S.aureus isolated from selected beach water and intertidal beach sand in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Methods: Two hundred and forty-nine beach sand and water samples were obtained from 10 beaches from April 2015 to April 2016. Staphylococcus aureus was isolat…

Changes of Sand Fly Populations and Leishmania infantum Infection Rates in an Irrigated Village Located in Arid Central Tunisia.

The current spread of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) throughout arid areas of Central Tunisia is a major public health concern. The main objective of this study is to investigate whether the development of irrigation in arid bio-geographical areas in Central Tunisia have led to the establishment of a stable cycle involving sand flies of the subgenus Larroussius and Leishmania infantum, and subsequently to the emergence of ZVL. Sand flies were collected from the village of Saddaguia, a highly irrigated zone located within an arid bio-geographical area of Central Tunisia by using modified…

Interleukin 10-Dominant Immune Response and Increased Risk of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis After Natural Exposure to Lutzomyia intermedia Sand Flies.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by parasites transmitted to the vertebrate host by infected sand flies. During transmission, the vertebrate host is also inoculated with sand fly saliva, which exerts powerful immunomodulatory effects on the host's immune response. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort analysis to characterize the human immune response to Lutzomyia intermedia saliva in 264 individuals, from an area for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania braziliensis. RESULTS: Antibodies were found in 150 individuals (56.8%); immunoglobulin G1 and G4 were the predominant…

A mathematical model for removal of human pathogenic viruses and bacteria by slow sand filtration under variable operational conditions.

Slow sand filtration (SSF) in drinking water production removes pathogenic microorganisms, but detection limits and variable operational conditions complicate assessment of removal efficiency. Therefore, a model was developed to predict removal of human pathogenic viruses and bacteria as a function of the operational conditions. Pilot plant experiments were conducted, in which bacteriophage MS2 and Escherichia coli WR1 were seeded as model microorganisms for pathogenic viruses and bacteria onto the filters under various temperatures, flow rates, grain sizes and ages of the Schmutzdecke. Remova…

First detection of Toscana virus RNA from sand flies in the genus Phlebotomus (Diptera: Phlebotomidae) naturally infected in Morocco.

In total, 656 sand flies were collected in June 2008 from Louata, a locality of Sefrou province, Morocco. Testing was conducted for the presence of phlebovirus by nested reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. We detected Toscana virus in four pools of male Phlebotomus perniciosus. This virus belongs to the genotype B previously recognized in France and Spain. This is the first time that Toscana virus has been detected in Morocco.

Therapeutic bronchoscopy in a child with sand aspiration and respiratory failure from near drowning--case report and literature review.

Foreign matter aspiration occurs relatively commonly in drowning and near-drowning events. In most cases, stomach contents are aspirated. Sand aspiration rarely occurs and there are no reported cases in children with near drowning. Limited data are available on clinical presentation and management of sand aspiration with accidental burial. We report a 3-year-old boy who nearly drowned while swimming in brackish waters and was found face down in sand. Sand aspiration was suspected when the child continued to have persistent wheezing and high ventilatory requirement despite intensive bronchodila…

Chronic toxicity of oil sands process-affected water to early life stage wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus).

Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) is a by-product of the extraction process of bitumen in the Canadian oil sands industry and is currently stored in tailings ponds on site. Wood frog embryos exposed to waterborne 80% OSPW (containing 9.1 mg/L total naphthenic acids) for 90 days exhibited a 49% ± 11.2% (mean ± 95% confidence interval) decrease in survival, whereas no mortality was observed in 1.25% to 40% OSPW treatments. Development to metamorphosis was significantly delayed in wood frogs exposed to 40% and 80% OSPW treatments, and at these concentrations, increases in mild follicular ce…

Linking chemical contamination to composition of bacterial communities in urban beach sands of a brackish sea under anthropogenic pressure.

The water quality on recreational beaches is constantly monitored. However, given that beachgoers often spend more time in contact with the sand than the seawater, it is essential to also regularly assess beach sand quality. In this study, 34 beach sand samples were collected in seven locations along the south shore of the Baltic Sea (Europe) between 2022 and 2023. The samples were obtained from recreational beaches with significant anthropogenic pressure. Since the use of new chemicals is widespread, it is imperative to not only monitor known contaminants but also to actively search for the p…

Phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Phlebotominae) diversity in the foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Surxondaryo Region of Uzbekistan: 50 years on.

In Uzbekistan, the number of reported leishmaniasis cases is rising at the alarming rate. In this work, we studied the phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Phlebotominae) diversity in the foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Surxondaryo Region of Uzbekistan and compared it with the data obtained for the same area 50 years ago, when infection prevalence was reportedly low. We found that the implicated vector for zoonotic leishmaniasis, P. papatasi, remained eudominant; the proportion of implicated anthroponotic leishmaniasis vector, P. sergenti, rose significantly from averaged 5.4 to 41.4%; Phleb…
