Proliferation index: a continuous model to predict prognosis in patients with tumours of the Ewing's sarcoma family.

The prognostic value of proliferation index (PI) and apoptotic index (AI), caspase-8, -9 and -10 expression have been investigated in primary Ewing's sarcoma family of tumours (ESFT). Proliferating cells, detected by immunohistochemistry for Ki-67, were identified in 91% (91/100) of tumours with a median PI of 14 (range 0-87). Apoptotic cells, identified using the TUNEL assay, were detected in 96% (76/79) of ESFT; the median AI was 3 (range 0-33). Caspase-8 protein expression was negative (0) in 14% (11/79), low (1) in 33% (26/79), medium (2) in 38% (30/79) and high (3) in 15% (12/79) of tumou

A Radiological Review of Ewing's Sarcoma of Mandible: A Case Report with One Year Follow-up.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is an uncommon round cell tumor with an aggressive course affecting mainly children and young adults. Only 1% of cases is reported with jaw involvement and have mandibular predilection. Radiographic finding in ES reflect many destructive nature of the lesion, like osteolysis, cortical erosion, periostitis and soft tissue mass. A case of ES of the mandible is reported with special consideration to the radiological appearance. How to cite this article: Krishna KBB, Thomas V, Kattoor J, Kusumakumari P. Clinical management of Ewing sarcoma of the bones of the hands and feet: a retrospective single-institution review.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bones of the hands and feet are uncommon sites for Ewing sarcoma. In this study, we reviewed our experience in the management of these tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical presentation, management, and outcome of patients with Ewing sarcoma of the bones of hands and feet treated at our institution (1981-2006). RESULTS: The cohort included 6 males and 3 females (8 white, 1 African American; median age at diagnosis, 15 years). Primary tumor site was the hand in 6 and the foot in 3 patients. Three patients had distant metastatic disease at diagnosis (lung [n

Treatment of a severe neglected valgus deformity after excision of the distal fibula for Ewing's sarcoma.

In distal fibular resection without reconstruction, the stabilising effect of the lateral malleolus is lost. Thus, the ankle may collapse into valgus and may be unstable in varus. Here, we describe a child who underwent successful staged surgical correction of a severe neglected valgus deformity after excision of the distal fibula for a Ewing's sarcoma.

Differences in dose scheduling as a factor in the etiology of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in Ewing sarcoma patients.

Clinical observation suggested a high prevalence of cardiac morbidity and mortality in children with Ewing sarcoma (ES) treated at B.C.'s Children's Hospital. We therefore compared 30 patients treated for Ewing sarcoma between 1978 and 1991 with 26 soft tissue sarcoma (STS) patients treated with similar chemotherapy over the same period of time. All patients were evaluated for cardiac function using echocardiography. Shortening fraction (SF) and left ventricular mass index (Massl) were compared before and after treatment. The role of chest irradiation, dose concentration (DC) of adriamycin (AD

Ewing's sarcoma. Radiographic pattern of healing and bony complications in patients with long-term survival.

The radiographic appearance of Ewing's sarcoma was studied retrospectively in 22 patients who survived 5 years or longer after diagnosis and treatment. Expected changes from treatment, including regression of the extraosseous soft tissue mass, periostitis, and reconstitution of the cortex, occurred in all patients. Local recurrence occurred in one patient 10 years after complete remission whereas secondary osteosarcoma occurred more than 5 years after complete remission in two other cases. Both recurrent and secondary tumors presented as new lytic foci at the site of the original primary lesio

Long-term results in 144 localized Ewing's sarcoma patients treated with combined therapy.

The results of 144 previously untreated cases of primary Ewing's sarcoma of bone are reported with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. This series was treated between 1972 and 1982 at Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli with a combined therapy. The local control of the disease consisted of amputation (ten cases), resection followed by radiation therapy (35-45 Gy) (48 cases) and radiation therapy alone (40-60 Gy) (86 cases). Adjuvant chemotherapy, rigorously standardized, was performed according two different protocols: the first (85 cases treated in the period 1972-1978) consisted of vincristine (VCR) Adr

Asymptomatic giant primary Ewing sarcoma of the skull in an adolescent: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the skull is an exceedingly rare condition, accounting for only 1-6% of cases. It is highly malignant and predominantly affects the long bones and pelvis of children and young adults. Skull involvement is unusual, with the parietal and frontal bones being the most frequently affected. We present a rare case of a giant primary occipital Ewing sarcoma that was clinically asymptomatic. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male presented with a 3-year history of a progressively enlarging, painless left parieto-occipital swelling, with accelerated growth over the

Primary Extraosseous Ewing Sarcoma of the Vulva: Unravelling the Mystery of a Common Tumor in an Uncommon Site.

Primary vulvar Ewing sarcoma (ES) is exceedingly rare, particularly in postmenopausal women. To date, only 14 cases have been confirmed through molecular cytogenetic analysis. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman presenting with a painful, ulcerated vulvar mass. Imaging revealed a 6×7.9×8.5 cm lobulated soft tissue lesion. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) demonstrated pulmonary metastases. Histopathology of the vulvar mass showed sheets of malignant small round cells, which were highlighted by strong membranous CD99 expression and NKX2.2 nuclear expression on immunohistochemis

Impaired neutrophil-mediated cell death drives Ewing's Sarcoma in the background of Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing Sarcoma (EWS) has been reported in seven children with Down syndrome (DS). To date, a detailed assessment of this solid tumour in DS patients is yet to be made. METHODS: Here, we characterise a chemo-resistant mediastinal EWS in a 2-year-old DS child, the youngest ever reported case, by exploiting sequencing approaches. RESULTS: The tumour showed a neuroectodermal development driven by the EWSR1-FLI1 fusion. The inherited myeloperoxidase deficiency of the patient caused failure of neutrophil-mediated cell death and promoted genomic instability. DISCUSSION: In this contex

Extraosseous Ewing's Sarcoma Masquerading as Adolescent Neck Mass-a Case Report and Review of Literature.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the ability of ultrasonography (US) to detect synovitis in metatarsophalangeal joints (MTP) in patients with suspicion of early arthritis, and to discriminate between diagnoses. METHODS: Patients referred to early arthritis clinics for differential diagnosis were enrolled, and clinical and laboratory measures were recorded. Ultrasonography of MTPs was performed searching for synovial hypertrophy (SH), joint effusion (JE) and power Doppler (PD), graded from 0 to 3 on a semi-quantitative scale. Patients were classified according to definite classification criteria, or

Primary intradural Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma of the cauda equina: A case report and literature review.

Intradural Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (IEES) is an infrequent occurrence. We report a case of a 66-year-old male who presented with a 2-month history of low back pain and bilateral S1 sciatica, with acute sphincter dysfunction. Imaging studies revealed an intradural extramedullary lesion in the cauda equina spanning from level L4 to S1. The patient underwent partial removal of the intradural lesion. Histopathological examination showed the presence of small round cells, which were consistent with Ewing Sarcoma. The patient was then treated with targeted radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The

Challenging case of pleuropericardial effusion: Primary extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma masquerading as tubercular pericarditis.

Ewing's sarcoma is an aggressive bone and soft tissue cancer of children and young adults, which can rarely affect extraskeletal soft tissues and visceral organs as extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma (EES). Primary EES of the pleura and pericardium is an extremely rare malignancy, and herein we report a case of Primary EES of the pericardium, which to the best of our knowledge is the first case report of the same from India.

Ewing's sarcoma of the urinary bladder - the urologic and pathologic differential diagnosis and current therapeutic options.

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer is 11th most common cancer worldwide. Histologically, most of the tumors are classified as urothelial carcinomas. Less common variants (squamous cell or adenocarcinomas) usually comprise up to 10% of cases. Other types of tumors are exceptional. The finding of Ewing's sarcoma in the bladder is considered extremely rare. CASE: We present the case of a 54-year-old female patient examined for painless hematuria. During the follow-up examination, a bulky tumor of the bladder was detected, but considering the extent of the bladder tumor, only a diagnostic transurethral r

Primary intracranial extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma of the skull base in an elderly adult: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Primary extraosseous intracranial Ewing's sarcoma, also known as a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor or "small round blue cell tumor," is an extremely rare entity with limited representation in the literature beyond the pediatric population. OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old male suffering occipital headache, nausea, and gait disturbance was found to have a large, avidly contrast-enhancing cerebellopontine angle mass extending into the cervical spinal canal with associated mass effect on medulla, cerebellum, fourth ventricle, and cervical spinal cord. This mass was not present

Rare presentation of chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis of the Iliac wing mimicking Ewing's sarcoma.

This report describes a case of chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) in an 11-year-old girl, involving the iliac bone as an initial, solitary site. Atypical imaging features were suspicious of a bone tumour, such as Ewing's sarcoma. Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis is a great masquerader and can present atypically. Radiologists should be familiar with both typical and atypical presentations, to determine an accurate diagnosis and guide appropriate management. Timely diagnosis may avoid invasive bone biopsy and inappropriate long-term antibiotic prescription for children.
