A reductive nanospiked covalent organic framework for tri-modal detection and extraction of gold.

A reductive nanospiked covalent organic framework (ETTA-TDA-COF) was developed for efficient gold recovery (828.08 mg g-1) and tri-modal sensing. Rapid in situ reduction of Au3+ to Au0 triggers changes in color, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and Rayleigh scattering, showing excellent linearity with gold concentrations.

Engaging stakeholders through social media and emergent organizations: The West Virginia Water Crisis Recovery as a case study.

The West Virginia water contamination crisis began on the morning of January 9, 2014, and left approximately 300,000 customers of the West Virginia American Water Company unable to use the water in their homes for any purpose other than flushing their toilets. Given the lack of appropriate response from the established organizations involved, many emergent organizations formed to help fill unmet informational and physical needs of the affected population. Crisis researchers have observed these ephemeral organizations for decades, but the recent proliferation of information communication techno

Topographic representation of numerosity in the human parietal cortex.

Numerosity, the set size of a group of items, is processed by the association cortex, but certain aspects mirror the properties of primary senses. Sensory cortices contain topographic maps reflecting the structure of sensory organs. Are the cortical representation and processing of numerosity organized topographically, even though no sensory organ has a numerical structure? Using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging (at a field strength of 7 teslas), we described neural populations tuned to small numerosities in the human parietal cortex. They are organized topographically, forming

The calcium sensing receptor: from understanding parathyroid calcium homeostasis to bone metastases.

The cloning of the calcium sensing receptor (CaR) confirmed that parathyroid cells monitor extracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]ext) via a receptor-type mechanism. This lead to the hypothesis that abnormalities in the expression and/or function of the CaR could explain the biochemical abnormalities in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Cultured cells from parathyroid adenomas of patients operated for PHPT were used to monitor real-time changes in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) as measured by fluorescent microscopy using the Fura-2/AM dye. We found that CaR agonists trigge

Endogenous opioid analgesia in hemorrhagic shock.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic shock produces an immediate activation of the autonomic nervous system and endogenous opioid pathways. Our studies have demonstrated that endogenous opioid activation aggravates the hemodynamic and inflammatory responses to shock. However, it is unclear whether endogenous opioid activation is triggered by noxious stimuli and furthermore whether it produces analgesia. METHODS: Experiments were conducted in chronically catheterized, conscious, unrestrained, nonheparinized, male, Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to fixed pressure hemorrhage. Blood samples were obtained for d

The Natural History, Pathobiology, and Clinical Manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 Infections.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2, is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus with epithelial cell and respiratory system proclivity. Like its predecessor, SARS-CoV, COVID-19 can lead to life-threatening disease. Due to wide geographic impact affecting an extremely high proportion of the world population it was defined by the World Health Organization as a global public health pandemic. The infection is known to readily spread from person-to-person. This occurs through liquid droplets by c

Anisotropic Crb accumulation, modulated by Src42A, is coupled to polarised epithelial tube growth in Drosophila.

The control of the size of internal tubular organs, such as the lungs or vascular system, is critical for proper physiological activity and to prevent disease or malformations. This control incorporates the intrinsic physical anisotropy of tubes to generate proportionate organs that match their function. The exact mechanisms underlying tube size control and how tubular anisotropy is translated at the cellular level are still not fully understood. Here we investigate these mechanisms using the Drosophila tracheal system. We show that the apical polarity protein Crumbs transiently accumulates an

Nerve transplantation: a father's final gift.

Offering the option of organ and tissue donation to grieving families may seem stressful, but asking the question may provide a positive means to extend care to the bereaved family and help others in return. Many donor families have said donation was an opportunity to make some sense out of a senseless situation and to relieve some of the grief they experienced. This article presents a case that started with such a discussion by ICU nurses in one of our donor hospitals, and ended with successful organ and tissue recovery and transplantation. As "routine" as this may sound, it was anything but

Exploring the social factors influencing the sense of belonging among medical students with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical universities have become more aware of disability inclusion, and have begun taking cognizance of the importance of a supportive environment for students with disabilities. Faculty members can mitigate challenges to legitimacy and belonging by creating safe learning environments built on openness, humility, and actively valuing each learner. However, the factors contributing to these students' sense of belonging in medical university settings remain under-explored. To address this issue, the present study examines social factors influencing the sense of belonging for medic

Engineering the ZIF-8 Pore for Electrochemical Sensor Applications-A Mini Review.

Zinc imidazole framework-8, abbreviated as ZIF-8, is a member of the metal organic framework (MOF) family. The chemical architecture of ZIF-8 consists of zinc metal duly coordinated with an organic ligand/fragment, resulting in a cagelike three-dimensional network with unique porosity. Because of such a unique architecture and physicochemical property, ZIF-8 has recently been explored in various applications such as gas storage, catalysis, electrochemical sensing, drug delivery, etc. Electrochemical sensors are currently a hot topic in scientific advances, where small, portable, Internet of Th

Projections of male-specific receptor neurons in the antennal lobe of the Oriental tobacco budworm moth, Helicoverpa assulta: a unique glomerular organization among related species.

The macroglomerular complex in the primary olfactory center of male moths receives information from numerous pheromone-detecting receptor neurons housed in specific sensilla located on the antennae. We investigated the functional organization of the three glomeruli constituting this complex in Helicoverpa assulta, a unique species among heliothine moths as concerns the composition of the pheromone blend. By tip recordings from the male-specific receptor neurons combined with cobalt-lysine stainings, the axon terminals in the brain were traced and subsequently reconstructed by camera lucida dra

Comparative genomics sheds new light on the convergent evolution of infrared vision in snakes.

Infrared vision is a highly specialized sensory system that evolved independently in three clades of snakes. Apparently, convergent evolution occurred in the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) proteins of infrared-sensing snakes. However, this gene can only explain how infrared signals are received, and not the transduction and processing of those signals. We sequenced the genome of Xenopeltis unicolor, a key outgroup species of pythons, and performed a genome-wide analysis of convergence between two clades of infrared-sensing snakes. Our results revealed pervasive molecular adapta

Tellurium Containing Long Lived Emissive Fluorophore for Selective and Visual Detection of Picric Acid through Photo-Induced Electron Transfer.

A novel tellurium (Te) containing fluorophore, 1 and its nickel (2) and copper (3) containing metal organic complex (MOC) have been synthesized to exploit their structural and optical properties and to deploy these molecules as fluorescent probes for the selective and sensitive detection of picric acid (PA) over other commonly available nitro-explosives. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) techniques revealed the inclusion of "soft" Tellurium (Te) and "hard" Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O) atoms in the molecular frameworks. Owing to the presence o

Ras/MAPK signaling mediates adipose tissue control of ovarian germline survival and ovulation in Drosophila melanogaster.

From insects to humans, oogenesis is tightly linked to nutritional input, yet little is known about how whole organism physiology matches dietary changes with oocyte development. Considering that diet-induced adipose tissue dysfunction is associated with an increased risk for fertility problems, and other obesity-associated pathophysiologies, it is critical to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking adipose nutrient sensing to remote control of the ovary and other tissues. Our previous studies in Drosophila melanogaster have shown that amino acid sensing, via the amino acid resp

Efficient chemosensors for toxic pollutants based on photoluminescent Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) metal-organic networks.

Optical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity, as important analytical tools for chemical and environmental research, can be realized by straightforward synthesis of luminescent one-, two- and three-dimensional Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) crystalline coordination arrays (CPs and MOFs). In these materials with emission centers typically based on charge transfer and intraligand emissions, the quantitative detection of specific analytes, as pesticides or anions, is probed by monitoring real-time changes in their photoluminescence and color emission properties. Pesticides/herbicides have extensive u

Fast, sensitive, and selective ion-triggered disassembly and release based on tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II)-functionalized metal-organic frameworks.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are microporous materials assembled from metal ions and organic linkers. Recently, many studies have been focused on the syntheses of MOFs with permanent porosity for various applications. However, no attention has been paid to controllable disassembly of MOFs and related applications. In this work, for the first time we synthesized novel tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II)-functionalized MOFs (i.e., RuMOFs) that could be ion-responsively disassembled and release massive guest materials loaded in the frameworks. The synthesized RuMOFs exhibited much stability in aqueo

Remote viewing with the artist Ingo Swann: neuropsychological profile, electroencephalographic correlates, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and possible mechanisms.

In the present study, the artist Ingo Swann, who helped develop the process of remote viewing (awareness of distant objects or places without employing normal senses), was exposed during a single setting of 30 min. to specific patterns of circumcerebral magnetic fields that significantly altered his subjective experiences. Several times during subsequent days, he was asked to sit in a quiet chamber and to sketch and to describe verbally distant stimuli (pictures or places) beyond his normal senses. The proportions of unusual 7-Hz spike and slow wave activity over the occipital lobes per trial

Role of heat shock protein 70 in innate alloimmunity.

This article briefly describes our own experience with the proven demonstration of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in reperfused renal allografts from brain-dead donors and reflects about its potential role as a typical damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) in the setting of innate alloimmunity. In fact, our group was able to demonstrate a dramatic up-regulation of HSP70 expression after postischemic reperfusion of renal allografts. Of note, up-regulation of this stress protein expression, although to a lesser extent, was already observed after cold storage of the organ indicating that this
