Globally, every 30 seconds a lower limb amputation is carried out due to diabetes, in 85 % of cases preceded by a foot ulcer. One of the main causes of foot ulcer formation is abnormal mechanical pressure and shear, the alleviation of which is therefore a key element in the management of diabetic foot ulcers. The toes, often neglected in routine clinical examinations, are particularly vulnerable because of the thin soft tissue between the bones and the skin and because of trauma due to ill-fitting shoes. The orthosis described in this article provides effective protection of protruding and inj…

A striatal toe is a misalignment of the hallux in dorsal flexion that frequently presents as a symptom of Parkinson's disease and also atypical Parkinson syndromes. It can negatively impact patients during activities such as walking, putting on socks and shoes, and particularly while wearing shoes. It causes pain and thus induces a loss of quality of life. But, to date, we have few data on the topics of the prevalence, genesis, and therapy of striatal toe. Publications available on botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) have demonstrated a positive effect in the treatment of striatal toe, although the cu…

Synthetic playing surfaces have evolved considerably since their introduction in the 1960s. Today, third-generation turf is routinely installed in professional, collegiate, and community settings. Proponents of artificial surfaces tout their versatility and durability in a variety of climates. However, the health and injury ramifications have yet to be clearly defined. Musculoskeletal injury is largely affected by the shoe-playing surface interface. However, conclusive statements cannot be made regarding the risk of certain shoe-playing surface combinations because of the variety of additional

A 19-year-old appendix mare was presented with severe, acute right forelimb lameness and a history of significant hoof wall defect. The defect began as progressive toe separation affecting the dorsal hoof wall, which was eventually resected by a farrier. Placement of bar shoes by a farrier to stabilize the hoof was ineffective. Radiographs showed hoof wall separation, palmar rotation, and displacement of the coffin bone, consistent with failure of the laminar structures. Treatment included phenylbutazone, radiographic-guided therapeutic farriery consisting of derotation with a wedge shoe, and …

INTRODUCTION: Over the course of a near-maximal effort 10 km run, positive mechanical work decreases at the ankle and increases at the knee. Although plantar flexor fatigue is believed to be responsible for the proximal shift in mechanical work generation, this has yet to be confirmed experimentally.
PURPOSE: To 1) determine the effect of plantar flexor fatigue on lower limb positive joint work during running and 2) determine the effect of running shoes on this relationship.
METHODS: Trained male runners (n = 12) were analyzed over two 30 s runs at their 10 km race pace, without and with loc…

BACKGROUND: Diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU) is often related to footwear fit. People with diabetes often have wider feet than in those without diabetes. Standards for evaluating footwear width in those at risk are therefore important.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search with a narrative review to assess consensus in quantitative methods used to assess footwear width for people at risk of DFU within research studies, and how often footwear is considered too narrow or wide. Search terms included diabet*, footwear, fit, size and width. This returned 1397 results, with 16 studies inc

Foot injuries have been a problem among Thai farmers for a long time. The sowing process is one of the high-risk processes because farmers have to walk in the field to spray rice seed without footwear. Literature review showed that cuts from stepping on sharp material or snail shells were major sources of injury. Traditional footwear such as Ninja shoes or cloth socks have raised the questions regarding their ability in protection from such injuries. This study investigates using Neoprene diving boots to protect from foot injuries during the rice sowing process. The sample from this study were…

BACKGROUND: Postural balance (PB) is a significant factor in dance performance and injury prevention. We aimed to determine whether the use of textured insoles inserted into casual walking shoes of dancers improved their dynamic PB and whether dancers with previous injury manifested different dynamic PB compared with non-injured dancers.
METHODS: In this crossover design study, 26 ballet dancers from the Australian Ballet School, aged 14-19 yrs, were divided into two groups matched by sex and class levels. Group 1 wore the textured insoles in their walking shoes for at least 2 hrs/day during …

Soldiers typically perform physically demanding tasks while wearing military uniforms and tactical footwear. New research has revealed a substantial increase of ~10% in energetic cost of walking when wearing modern combat boots versus running shoes. One approach to mitigating these costs is to follow in the footsteps of recent innovations in athletic footwear that led to the development of 'super shoes', that is, running shoes designed to lower the energetic cost of locomotion and maximise performance. We modelled the theoretical effects of optimised combat boot construction on physical perfor…

INTRODUCTION: Carbon-fiber plate (CFP) running shoes may alter ankle and foot biomechanical loading patterns, thereby potentially increasing the risk of foot stress injuries. However, there still a lack of systematic quantitative analysis of how multiple key design parameters (determining CFP performance) influence foot biomechanical responses. This study aimed to clarify how composite CFP influence the mechanical response of the foot and ankle, with the goal of reducing overuse injuries and providing biomechanical guidance for the structural design of CFP running shoes.
METHODS: A three-dime…

Skateboarding is an Olympic event with frequent jumping and landing, where the cushioning effect by the foot structure (from the arch, metatarsals, etc.) and damping performance by sports equipment (shoes, insoles, etc.) can greatly affect an athlete's sports performance and lower the risk of limb injury. Skateboarding is characterized by the formation of a "man-shoe-skateboard system," which makes its foot cushioning mechanism different from those of other sports maneuvers, such as basketball vertical jump and gymnastics broad jump. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the cushioning mechani…

Altering the longitudinal bending stiffness of footwear has the potential to affect mechanics of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Recent efforts have been put forth to identify an optimal bending stiffness of footwear to improve running performance. However, little is known about how this optimal bending stiffness may change with running speed. The purpose of this study was to investigate how dynamic angular stiffness about the MTP joint changes across running speeds. Eighteen participants ran at five speeds from 3.89 to 6.11 m/s. Metatarsophalangeal joint angles, moments, and stiffness we
