This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional relationships between affective wellbeing and sleep, and to explore the moderating effects of depressive and insomnia symptoms. Data from two studies, involving 178 participants in total aged 18-29 years, were analyzed. Over 14 days, participants completed daily surveys assessing affective wellbeing and wore ECG chest belts for heart rate variability monitoring to derive objective sleep indices. Multilevel models were used to examine within-subject associations between affective states and subsequent sleep, and vice versa, while considering dep

Sleep unbinds memories from their emotional learning context, protecting them from emotional interference due to a change of mood between learning and recall. According to the 'sleep to forget and sleep to remember' model, emotional unbinding takes place during rapid eye movement sleep. To test this hypothesis, we investigated emotional contextual interference effects after early versus late post-learning sleep periods, in which slow wave and rapid eye movement sleep, respectively, predominate. Participants learned a list of neutral word pairs after induction of a happy or a sad mood, then sle

Rett's syndrome is a progressive disorder in female patients, characterized by autistic behavior, dementia, ataxia, loss of purposeful use of the hands, and seizures. The electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics of 17 patients with Rett's syndrome, studied between the ages of 1 and 16 years, are reported and correlated with a recently proposed system of clinical staging. Although a specific diagnostic EEG pattern was not seen in these patients, we did observe a progressive deterioration in the EEG, characterized by a slowing of EEG activity, a loss of normal sleep EEG characteristics, and

The discovery of new dysleptic drugs has prompted the present review of these substances which influence neuropsychic activity. It is possible to divide dysleptics into two categories: under the first heading fall mescaline, LSD-25, psilocybine, adrenochrome, bufotenine and dimethyltryptamin; the other group includes Ditran, Butoxamine, WH-4849, and AHR-379. The place of Sernyl could not be ascertained and it might well constitute a class by itself. The mescaline type of reaction is mainly characterized by the induction of perceptual distortions without alteration of the state of consciousness

Cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) of microarousals reported in EEG studies is now regarded as an integrating mechanism for the different parts of the central nervous system including the autonomic system. A recently developed continuous index of cardiac parasympathetic activity (CIPA) can be time locked to the EEG allowing the relationship between EEG and autonomic changes to be studied in sleep. Eleven normal subjects were studied for evidence of periodicity in CIPA in non-REM sleep, five of whom had been sleep deprived. Fast Fourier's transformation of the CIPA data confirmed its periodicity

A female case with the Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), which first occurred at the age of 19, was discussed in relation to the following four characteristics: 1) a female case, 2) a loss of memory and the appearance of slow waves in the pathosis, 3) the abnormal pattern of growth hormone (GH) secretion during sleep in the pathosis, and 4) a prolonged latency between the peaks of III and V in the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in both the pathosis and nonpathosis. These characteristics may suggest that there is a slight disturbance of consciousness in the pathosis, and that there is a functiona

Olfactory oscillations may enhance cognitive processing through coupling with beta (β, 15-30 Hz) and gamma (γ, 30-160 Hz) activity in the hippocampus (HPC). We hypothesize that coupling between olfactory bulb (OB) and HPC oscillations is increased by cholinergic activation in control rats and is reduced in kainic-acid-treated epileptic rats, a model of temporal lobe epilepsy. OB γ2 (63-100 Hz) power was higher during walking and immobility-awake (IMM) compared to sleep, while γ1 (30-57 Hz) power was higher during grooming than other behavioral states. Muscarinic cholinergic agonist pilocarpine

Sleep diary and actigraphy assessments of insomnia symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) are often discrepant. We examined whether opioid dose and age interact in predicting magnitude or direction of discrepancies. Participants (N = 199, M = 51.5 years, SD = 11.7) with FM and insomnia completed 14 days of diaries and actigraphy. Multiple regressions determined whether average opioid dose and its interaction with age predicted magnitude or direction of diary/actigraphy discrepancies in sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO) and sleep efficiency (SE), controlling for sex,

Postural tone is reduced during slow-wave sleep (SWS) and absent during rapid eye movement sleep (REMS). In obstructive sleep apnea subjects, upper airway dilating muscles, including those of the tongue, show a similar pattern; this contributes to sleep-related airway obstructions. However, in healthy subjects, state-dependent changes in the activity of pharyngeal muscles are variable. In seven chronically instrumented Sprague-Dawley rats, an animal model used to study sleep and sleep-disordered breathing, we quantified lingual and postural muscle activity across the sleep-wake states by measu

Alterations of peripheral magnesium (Mg) concentration have been reported in association with several behavioral disorders and sleep organization. Blood Mg regulation is under a strong genetic control, whereas brain Mg regulation does not seem to be affected. We have studied peripheral and central levels of Mg and analyzed sleep in two lines of mice selected for low (MGL) and high (MGH) red blood cell (RBC) Mg levels. The same variables were also studied in C57BL/6J mice before and after 3 weeks of Mg deficiency. Whereas blood Mg was highly affected by the selection, brain Mg exhibited only sm

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of zolpidem 1 0 mg, a new imidazopyridine hypnotic drug, on sleep and respiratory patterns at a simulated altitude of 4,000 meters. Eight male subjects spent three nights in a decompression chamber. The first study night was spent at the ambient pressure corresponding to sea level. The two other nights were spent at a simulated altitude of 4,000 meters with either zolpidem or a placebo in random order according to a double-blind, crossover design. All subjects showed periodic breathing (PB) during sleep at simulated high altitude. Furthermore,

Nine males with sleep apnea DOES syndrome and three males with sleep apnea DIMS syndrome were treated with prosthetic mandibular advancement (PMA). The method uses a prosthesis, which is designed to advance the mandible 3-5 mm to prevent upper airway occlusion during sleep. The apnea index in the obstructive-type apnea and the percentage of time spent in obstructive apnea decreased significantly with PMA. Although the apnea index showed merely a tendency to decrease in central apnea (p < 0.1), the percentage of time spent in central apnea decreased significantly with PMA. A marked improvement

The sleep EEGs of 52 children suffering from febrile seizures were recorded. Their waking EEGs were free of epileptic activity. Only a few patients fell asleep without medication, the majority received 2 mg/kg body weight of promazine hydrochloride. Epileptic activity occurred in the sleep EEG of 15 out of 52 patients (29%). Exclusively short generalized paroxysms of high amplitude, mostly irregular and partially abortive 3-4/sec spike-wave complexes and occasional 2.5/sec sharp-slow-wave complexes were recorded. Epileptic discharges were detected in the B stage in 11 patients, in the C stage

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Induction of fluid overload during sleep in older men causes fluid accumulation in the neck, worsens obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and reduces sleep efficiency and slow wave sleep. However, it is not clear whether disrupted sleep structure was related to age, fluid accumulation, or to OSA severity as assessed by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). We hypothesize that fluid accumulation in the neck is a significant contributor to the sleep structure.
METHODS: Twenty non-obese men, 46 ± 11 years, underwent a daytime sleep study following a night of sleep deprivation. Before and a

Sleep is critical for brain plasticity during early development, yet individual maturation of sleep neurophysiology in infancy remains poorly characterized. Slow wave activity (SWA) is a key marker of cortical maturation and experience-dependent plasticity, making early regional sleep dynamics highly relevant for neurodevelopmental health. We conducted a longitudinal high-density EEG study in 11 healthy infants, of whom 9 contributed analyzable EEG data at both 3 and 6 months. We assessed non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and analyzed the maturation of SWA (0.75-4.25 Hz), theta power (4.5-7.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) can be preceded by isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). As excessive sighing during wakefulness is a red flag for MSA in individuals with parkinsonism, we measured sighing during slow wave sleep (N3) and REM sleep as potential biomarkers in 73 participants with MSA, 111 with iRBD, 257 with PD, and 115 controls. The number of sighs/hour of N3 (index) was higher in the MSA group than in the other groups. Sighs were rarer in REM sleep than in N3 sleep. A sigh index greater than 3.4/h of N3 was 95% sensitive in discriminating parti

Regarding the aetiology of erectile dysfunction, beside numerous organic causes in many cases psychological factors play an important role. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the so-called psychogenic erectile dysfunction are not yet understood. Based on a neurobiological approach to psychogenic erectile dysfunction, polysomnographic investigations were carried out with the aim of identifying possible alterations of the sleep EEG. 24 male patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction without detectable organic factors or other mental disorders were studied in the sleep laboratory, a

A robust, automated pattern recognition system for polysomnography data targeted to the sleep-waking state and stage identification is presented. Five patterns were searched for: slow-delta and theta wave predominance in the background electro-encephalogram (EEG) activity; presence of sleep spindles in the EEG; presence of rapid eye movements in an electro-oculogram; and presence of muscle tone in an electromyogram. The performance of the automated system was measured indirectly by evaluating sleep staging, based on the experts' accepted methodology, to relate the detected patterns in infants

Our previous studies indicated that L-type calcium channel blocker diltiazem could potentiate pentobarbital-induced hypnosis through serotonergic system. In view of the important role of dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) on the sleep regulation and the pharmacological actions of calcium channel blocker, we presumed that Ca(2+) in the DRN may play an important role in sleep regulation in pentobarbital treated rats. Therefore, we investigated whether the Ca(2+) modulation in DRN by the microinjection of L-type Ca(2+) channel antagonist diltiazem, agonist BAY-K-8644, Ca(2+) chelator EGTA and CaCl(2) wou
