[Health advice before travel to tropical countries].

Some 8% of Swiss citizens travel in the developing countries annually. Advising these travellers is an important task for the physician, though the most frequent infections are the less serious travellers' diarrhea and common colds. To some extent the more serious tropical diseases can be avoided by appropriate measures, e.g. vaccination (against yellow fever, tetanus, polio etc). and by chemoprophylaxis (malaria). Individual fitness for travel should be checked prior to any journey abroad, and special advice must be given to travellers with special risks (e.g. pregnant women, infants, persons

Unmet Subsistence and Mental Health Needs in Women Experiencing Homelessness: Rethinking Care Models for Improved Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Women experiencing homelessness or unstable housing (WEH) exhibit disproportionately high rates of depression and anxiety. While existing research links unmet subsistence needs (e.g., housing and food insecurity) to mental health (MH), the intersection of these unmet needs with health and social factors on MH disparities remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations between unmet subsistence needs and MH symptoms among WEH, focusing on interactions with health and social-related factors, including sleep disturbances, pain, and HIV status. DESIGN: Cross-sectional anal

Objective Sleep Efficiency Predicts Cardiovascular Disease in a Community Population: The Sleep Heart Health Study.

Background There was little evidence about the role of objective sleep efficiency (SE) in the incidence of major cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between objective SE and CVD based on polysomnography. Methods and Results A total of 3810 participants from the SHHS (Sleep Heart Health Study) were selected in the current study. CVD was assessed during an almost 11-year follow-up period. The primary composite cardiovascular outcome was major adverse cardiovascular events, defined as CVD mortality, congestive heart failure, myocardial

Impact of Engagement in Exercise on Sleep Quality Among Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has beneficial effects for physical health outcomes and has also been shown to reduce the severity of psychological health symptoms. Recent studies have shown a potentially positive impact of exercise on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prominent among those with PTSD, sleep disturbance and nightmares are among the top three PTSD symptoms commonly reported by treatment-seeking Veterans. Regular physical exercise has been consistently associated with better sleep. This study utilized a longitudinal design to explore the relationship between exercise and sleep among Vet

Non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease: a practical approach.

Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) drive disability, reduce quality of life and increase healthcare resource use. Yet, they are often under-recognised in time-limited clinics. We outline an evidence-informed approach for everyday neurology. We propose brief previsit process followed by in-visit prioritisation of one or two high-impact symptoms and simple education/resources for the rest. Psychosis requires clinicians to address triggers, simplify dopaminergic therapy and use PD-safe antipsychotics when required. Mood and anxiety benefit from optimised dopaminergic regimens, selecti

Selecting behaviour change priorities for trachoma 'F' and 'E' interventions: A formative research study in Oromia, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness. However, little is known about the behavioural and environmental determinants of transmission of the causative organism, Chlamydia trachomatis. We conducted formative research in a trachoma hyper-endemic area of Ethiopia to explore the behaviours which are likely to contribute to trachoma transmission and map their determinants. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Data on water use, hygiene, defecation, and sleeping arrangements were collected from five communities during the dry and rainy seasons in 2016. Integrated assessment of dermal and inhalation exposure to chlorinated paraffins using personal silicone wristbands and measurement of skin contamination.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), specifically short-chain (SCCPs) and medium-chain (MCCPs), are widely used industrial chemicals of concern due to persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. This study assessed integrated personal exposure (dermal and inhalation) to SCCPs and MCCPs using silicone wristbands (SWBs) and hand wipes (HWs) in 20 volunteers over five days. Participants wore two SWBs simultaneously: a non-removable wristband (N) worn continuously and a removable wristband (R) taken off during sleep and hygiene. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in all SWBs. Median concentrations in SWBs(N) w

Evaluation of the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia delivered by nurses and physicians for patients in primary care (the NPD study): protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, and it adversely impacts daily living and increases the risk of chronic and acute health problems. Of the few individuals who seek treatment for insomnia, most pursue help in primary care settings. The management of insomnia most commonly focuses on the prescription of hypnotics and sleep hygiene recommendations, although these are not the most effective treatments. Conversely, cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-i), which is considered to be the first-line treatment for persistent insomnia, is seldom prescribed by primary c…

Forced Surgeries in the Mentally Challenged Females: Ethical Consideration and a Narrative Review of Literature.

Women with mental disabilities deal with menstrual problems like any other woman. The menstrual hygiene, discomfort, and sleep disturbance associated with menses make these women irritable, and their caregivers sometimes feel and decide on some unindicated surgeries like hysterectomy, sterilization, and abortion to save them from getting pregnant. While taking into consideration the burden on caregivers, complete informed choices to reach a decision are also important as these surgical procedures may do more harm than good. Early menopause happens when a hysterectomy is performed in young adul
