Clear cell "sugar" tumors of urethra: a previously undescribed occurrence and review of published data.

Clear cell "sugar" tumor is a rare benign tumor considered as a member of the family of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of clear cell "sugar" tumor presented as a mass protruding from the urethra in a 15-year-old girl. Pathologic examination revealed a tumor composed of epithelioid cells with "water" clear cytoplasm that stained positively for melanocytic and smooth muscle-specific markers. Treatment of this tumor included a surgical excision and complete removal of the urethral mass, with examination of surgical margins. Three months

Case Report: Multiple mesenchymal hamartomas showing spontaneous motility in the nasopharynx.

Hamartomas are classified as either epithelial, mesenchymal, or epithelium-mesenchymal mixed types. They occur extremely rarely in the nasopharynx. A 58-year-old man had multiple tumors with repeating contraction and relaxation in the nasopharynx shown on endoscopy. One of the tumors was endoscopically resected under general anesthesia for histological examination and was finally diagnosed as mesenchymal hamartoma. Smooth muscle tissue is sometimes confirmed in mesenchymal hamartomas, but spontaneous contraction in nasopharyngeal hamartomas is rare. In this case, coexistence of muscle tissue,

[Benign metastasizing uterine leiomyoma with lung metastasis: problems of diagnosis and treatment].

Uterine leiomyoma (LM) is a smooth muscle tumor occurring in 30% of women of reproductive age. This neoplasm is the most common benign tumor of female genitals. Uterus is the most frequent localization of tumor. However, LM can be detected in external genitalia, ovaries, bladder and urethra. Despite the benign nature, LM is characterized by metastasizing as one of the main properties of malignant neoplasms. For the first time, Steiner described this case in 1939. The author found similar histological structure of pulmonary and uterine neoplasms. LM metastases in bone tissue, skin, mediastinum,…

Mesenchymal Tumors of the Breast: Fibroblastic/Myofibroblastic Lesions and Other Lesions.

Mesenchymal breast tumors are a rare and diverse group of tumors that present some of the most challenging cases for multidisciplinary breast cancer teams. As a result of overlapping morphologies and a lack of large-scale studies on these tumors, practices are often heterogeneous and slow to evolve. Herein, we present a non-systematic review that focuses on progress, or lack thereof, in the field of mesenchymal breast tumors. We focus on tumors originating from fibroblastic/myofibroblastic cells and tumors originating from less common cellular origins (smooth muscle, neural tissue, adipose tis

Malignant Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor of Ovary: A Rare Case Report.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) have unique morphology comprised perivascular epitheloid cells and express both melanocytic and smooth muscle cell markers. Gynecological PEComas account for approximately 25% of all PEComas, and in most cases, the primary site of the tumor is the uterine body. Ovarian PEComa is exceptional. Here, we report a case of primary malignant PEComa of ovary in a 38 years female.

Angioleiomyoma as a rare cause of a painful subcutaneous nodule in the leg: a case report.

Angioleiomyomas are benign tumors originating in the vascular smooth muscles. The tumor typically presents as a painful, solitary, small subcutaneous nodule. Herein, we have described a case report of chronic leg pain due to angioleiomyoma. We outline the clinical, radiological and histopathological features of this rare diagnosis for a painful nodule of extremity. Although rare, angioleiomyoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of chronic leg pain.

Imaging spectrum of gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) were first described by Clark and Mazur in 1983 for smooth muscle neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract differentiating them from leiomyoma, leiomyosarcomas and neurogenic tumors. GISTs can arise from the bowel, peritoneum, omentum or retroperitoneum. This article reviews the computed tomography imaging features of primary GISTs, response to treatment and highlights data on predicting the outcome to chemotherapeutic drugs on imaging.

Adenocarcinoid tumor of the periampullary region: a novel duodenal neoplasm presenting as biliary tract obstruction.

An adenocarcinoid tumor of the duodenum, similar to those arising in the appendix, is reported. The tumor presented as a periampullary mass causing pancreaticobiliary obstruction. The microscopic features were typical of adenocarcinoid with diffuse infiltration of mucosa, submucosa, and smooth muscle by tubuloglandular structures lined by enteroendocrine and goblet cells. Signet ring cells were also present. It is desirable to distinguish adenocarcinoids from adenocarcinomas and typical carcinoids in this setting as, by analogy with appendiceal tumors, adenocarcinoids may be expected to have a

When the uterine mass is not a leiomyoma.

A 37-year-old nulliparous woman with abnormal uterine bleeding and a uterine mass suggestive of a leiomyoma not responding to medical therapy was submitted to two hysteroscopies with histological analysis. The first one showed a 'leiomyoma' and the second a 'uterine smooth muscle tumour of uncertain malignant potential/epithelioid leiomyosarcoma, with positivity for hormonal receptors'. The patient was submitted to a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and the microscopic examination of the tumour revealed a 'uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex-cord tumours'. According t

Piloleiomyoma with segmental distribution--Case report.

Piloleiomyoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm arising from the erector pilorum muscle. It presents as reddish-brown papules or nodules, in general located on the limbs or trunk, often painful. The present paper describes a case of piloleiomyoma with segmental distribution on left trunk, with an important expression of pain.

Hepatic Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor (PEComa): A Case Report.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a rare group of mesenchymal neoplasms composed of perivascular epithelioid cells. While commonly found in the kidney, uterus, and soft tissues, PEComas of the liver are exceedingly rare.  We present a case of a PEComa incidentally discovered in a 73-year-old female patient undergoing evaluation for abdominal pain. Imaging revealed an indeterminant mass in the left hepatic lobe without internal color uptake on Doppler flow. Histopathological evaluation was consistent with PEComa. The tumor was mainly composed of well-circumscribed epithelioid a

Leiomyomas beyond the uterus: unusual locations, rare manifestations.

Uterine leiomyomas affect 20%-30% of women older than 35 years. Extrauterine leiomyomas are rarer, and they present a greater diagnostic challenge: These histologically benign tumors, which originate from smooth muscle cells, usually arise in the genitourinary tract (in the vulva, ovaries, urethra, and urinary bladder) but may arise in nearly any anatomic site. In addition, unusual growth patterns may be seen, including benign metastasizing leiomyoma, disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis, intravenous leiomyomatosis, parasitic leiomyoma, and retroperitoneal growth. In the presence of such a p

Unilateral giant renal angiomyolipoma and pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are mesenchymal neoplasms, named so because of the complex tissue composition represented by variable proportions of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle cells, and dysmorphic blood vessels. Although AMLs may rise in different sites of the body, they are mostly observed in the kidney and liver. In the case of renal AMLs, they are described in two types: isolated AMLs and AMLs associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). While most cases of AMLs are found incidentally during imaging examinations and are asymptomatic, others may reach huge proportions causing symptoms. Pulmona

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm (PEComa) of the gynecologic tract: clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical characterization of 16 cases.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) belongs to a family of tumors characterized by coexpression of melanocytic and muscle markers. Recent studies have shown that sporadic and tuberous sclerosis complex-associated PEComa may respond to mTOR inhibitors underscoring the importance of recognizing this tumor. However, its occurrence in the gynecologic tract continues to be disputed owing to its common misclassification as other types of uterine sarcoma and its controversial relationship with epithelioid smooth muscle tumors. To more fully characterize PEComa of the female genital tract, 16…

A case of glomangiopericytoma involving the orbital wall.

Sinonasal type hemangiopericytomas are very rare tumors, and are often called glomangiopericytoma. They are believed to be derived from perivascular modified smooth muscle cells. Their origin is similar to glomus tumors but some distinct differences exist. Glomangiopericytomas are indolent tumors and overall survival rates are higher after complete surgical excision. Recurrence rates are as high as 30%. We present a case of glomangiopericytoma which involves the orbital wall, noteworthy because such bone-dissolving glomangiopericytomas are extremely rare.

Leiomyoblastoma of the stomach. Report of 9 cases.

Gastric leiomyoblastoma is a rare intramural tumor which originates in the smooth muscle. Nine cases were studied with respect to their clinical, radiological, and pathological features. Six distinct radiological patterns may be seen, of which 5 are represented in this series. Most such lesions occur in the gastric antrum. Leiomyoblastomas are generally benign and do not recur following removal.

Large intraperitoneal lipoleiomyoma in a pre-menopausal woman: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lipoleiomyoma is a rare, benign variant of the commonplace uterine leiomyoma. Unlike leiomyoma, these tumors are composed of smooth muscle cells admixed with mature adipose tissue. While rare, they are most frequently identified in the uterus, but even more infrequently have been described in extrauterine locations. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case report of a 45-year-old woman with a history of in vitro fertilization pregnancy presenting 6 years later with abdominal distention and weight loss found to have a 30-cm intra-abdominal lipoleiomyoma. While cross-sectional imaging

Case Report: An extremely rare case of epithelioid STUMPs.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors of the female reproductive system. Epithelioid STUMP is a special and relatively rare type of uterine leiomyoma that may exhibit malignant potential as smooth muscle tumors with an epithelioid cell morphology are generally believed to be more aggressive than usual leiomyomas. This report describes a case of epithelioid STUMP. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-year-old woman of childbearing age underwent curettage for abnormal uterine bleeding. The initial pathological findings suggested a low-grade malignant uterine mesenchymal tumor; th…

Indeterminate malignant potential glomus tumor of the esophagus: A case report.

RATIONALE: Glomus tumors of the esophagus are exceedingly rare neoplasms with poorly defined biological behavior and malignant potential. Their diagnostic ambiguity and management dilemmas necessitate detailed case documentation to refine clinical strategies. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 62-year-old male presented with progressive 4-month dysphagia for solid foods, without weight loss or hematemesis. DIAGNOSES: Contrast-enhanced computed tomography identified a 50 mm × 23 mm mid-thoracic esophageal mass. Endoscopic ultrasound localized a hypoechoic muscularis propria-originating lesion.
