The records of 292 patients who were admitted to a teaching hospital from 1984 to 1990 in Uberlandia in southeastern Brazil after being bitten by snakes of the genus Bothrops were retrospectively surveyed. The patients were from 42 municipalities in three states of Brazil. Most (42%) bites occurred between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Fourteen percent of the bites occurred in the month of April. In 54 (18%) of the cases, the snakes were captured and identified as belonging to the following species: B. moojeni (29), B. neuwiedi (18), and Bothrops species (7). A diagnosis was made based on clinical fin

The demographic features, treatment, and outcome of 36 rattlesnake envenomation cases are reviewed. Two populations at special risk are identified: (1) young children (12/36) who sustain lower extremity bites, and (2) adults who consume alcohol and handle snakes (10/36) who sustain upper extremity bites. Antivenin was used in 22 cases with only one serious case of serum sickness. Three definite diagnoses of compartment syndrome were made on the basis of elevated compartment pressures. Hand bites accounted for 20 of the 36 cases. The greatest functional disability followed digit bites in that 1

Cerebrovascular complications are rare following viper bites. A 65-year-old man presented with loss of consciousness and developed haemiparesis following a viper bite. Coagulation parameters were severely deranged. MRI showed acute ischaemic infarction on the left side in the precentral and postcentral gyrus, hemipons and cerebellum. Troponin T was elevated and transient left bundle branch block was seen. The patient had a good outcome following treatment with Anti Snake Venom and supportive therapy. Possible mechanisms of infarction are discussed.

To clarify the characteristics of the hematological disturbances evoked by snakebite, we measured the antithrombin III (AT-III) activity, alpha2-plasmin inhibitor (alpha2-PI) activity, fibrinogen concentration (Fg) and level of fibrin degradation products (FDP) in 21 patients envenomed by several snakes in south China between August 1998 and October 1999. The hematological changes observed were as follows: the mean activities of AT-III were decreased in patients bitten by Ophiophagus hannah (Oh.), Bungarus fasciatus (Bf.), Hydrophis cyanocinctus (Hc.), Rhabdophis subminiatus (Rs.), and Trimere

Although initially created for the treatment of rattlesnake (genus: Crotalus) bites, Crotalidae-Fab antivenin is used to treat many different pit viper envenomations. However, the efficacy of Crotalidae-Fab in preventing tissue loss from copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) or cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) snakebites remains unclear. Recent reports show that Agkistrodon-related bites rarely require treatment beyond simple observation and pain control. The purpose of this study was to examine the amount of tissue loss in patients who received Crotalidae-Fab compared with those who did not

Herpes simplex, varicella-zoster lesions, skin rashes, diabetes, snake bites and insect bites have all been treated by using Clinacanthus nutans (C. nutans). The pharmacological effects of C. nutans are influenced by the presence of terpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic acids, saponins, glycosides, steroids and tannins. This review focused on the phytochemical makeup, which varies geographically and is a subject of scarcely existing knowledge. C. nutans served as the primary search term, while the keywords "phytochemicals", "chemical component" and "phytochemistry" were used to search th…

Bites by Aruban Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus unicolor) are rare and not known to induce severe envenomations. Here, we present a case of a 57 year-old man bitten by his pet Aruban Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus unicolor). He was admitted to hospital within 15 min. Three and a half hours later his fibrinogen concentration decreased to 0.6 g/L (normal: 2.0-4.0). Nine hours post-bite, he was treated with polyvalent snake antivenom covering Crotalus durissus. Three hours later his fibrinogen became undetectable while at that time clotting times were prolonged (PT 38.7 s (normal: 12.5-14.5) and a

The prognostic factors for amputation following envenoming by snakes of the Bothrops genus were identified from the medical records of 3139 patients. Each of these patients had been bitten by Bothrops sp. and treated in the Hospital Vital Brazil, in São Paulo, Brazil, between 1981 and 1990. The 21 (0.67%) of the patients who had undergone amputation were compared with the 3118 who had not, with respect to the characteristics of the accident, the snake, the victim, the local and systemic manifestations of the envenoming and the treatment. There was an association between amputation and the mont

Snake-related injury (SRI) is one of the most common medical emergencies encountered in tropical countries such as Malaysia. The majority of snake bites are nonvenomous, while the less common venomous snakebite can cause major disability or even death. There are 16 pit viper species documented in Malaysia which can be categorized based on their habitat. We report a case of a 41-year-old male who presented to a district hospital 1 h after being bitten twice by a pit viper snake (Trimeresurus sabahi fucatus) on the left side of his face. He was given green pit viper anti-venom (GPAV). He later u…

Animals use venoms for multiple purposes, most prominently for prey acquisition and self-defense. In snakes, venom composition often evolves as a result of selection for optimization for local diet. However, whether selection for a defensive function has also played a role in driving the evolution of venom composition has remained largely unstudied. Here, we use an online survey of snakebite victims to test a key prediction of a defensive function, that envenoming should result in the rapid onset of severe pain. From the analysis of 584 snakebite reports, involving 192 species of venomous snak

Snake bites can be deadly, but the venoms also contain components of medical and biotechnological value. The proteomic characterization of snake venom proteomes, snake venomics, has thus a number of potential benefits for basic research, clinical diagnosis, and development of new research tools and drugs of potential clinical use. Snake venomics is also relevant for a deep understanding of the evolution and the biological effects of the venoms, and to generate immunization protocols to elicit toxin-specific antibodies with greater specificity and effectiveness than conventional systems. Our sn…
