Cross-frequency coupling (CFC), an electrophysiologically derived measure of oscillatory coupling in the brain, is believed to play a critical role in neuronal computation, learning and communication. It has received much recent attention in the study of both health and disease. We searched for literature that studied CFC during resting state and task-related activities during electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography in psychiatric disorders. Thirty-eight studies were identified, which included attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Alzheimer's dementia, autism spectrum disorder, b

The rare genetic disorder X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is often exclusively considered to impact children, and, as such, adult patients with XLH may receive inadequate care because their symptoms are not associated with XLH. However, studies have shown that XLH has long-term adverse health consequences that continue throughout adulthood requiring comprehensive lifelong care. Indeed, XLH impacts patients' whole body, whole life, and whole family. XLH does not just affect the bones; symptoms are chronic and progressive, worsening throughout adulthood, and the burden of XLH overflows into the

Epidemiological studies show 30% to 50% of all patients in community mental health teams have personality disorders. These are normally comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, often as Galenic syndromes, and are seldom identified. In the Boston (UK) Personality Project all patients under a community health service in Boston in Lincolnshire will be asked to agree to have their personality status assessed using scales recording the new ICD-11 classification, together with clinical ratings, social function and satisfaction. A control group of 100 patients from an adjacent service of similar de

BACKGROUND: Few evidence-based treatments exist for addressing pain among patients receiving medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). To inform novel interventions, this exploratory study investigated pain profiles and their associations with multi-level individual, family, neighborhood, and social and community correlates among patients receiving MOUD.
METHODS: Using baseline data from the NIH HEAL-funded longitudinal Collaboration Linking Opioid Use Disorder and Sleep ("CLOUDS") study to examine sleep and circadian mechanisms that contribute to nonmedical opioid use and MOUD retention, we

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with a prevalence of approximately 0.7%. People with ASD show characteristic social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, routine-like and inflexible behavior, special interests and altered perception. ASD manifest in the first decade of life and usually persist throughout life. Like most other neurodevelopmental disorders, they are therefore inevitably not only a topic of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy (CAPPP) but also of adult psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy (APPP); how

AIM: Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy Type II (HSAN‑II) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive sensory loss, recurrent ulcers, and frequent amputations. Despite its severe physical consequences, the psychological impact of HSAN‑II remains largely unexplored. This exploratory single‑case report presents the psychological profile of a 31‑year‑old Iranian man diagnosed with HSAN‑II.
METHODS: A semi‑structured clinical interview and a battery of standardized psychological instruments were administered, including the Interpersonal Communication Sk

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that impairs social interaction, communication, and appropriate behavior.
METHODS: Out of 1,740 articles initially identified through electronic databases using PRISMA guidelines and the PICOS framework, only 15 met the inclusion criteria for this review.
RESULTS: Although the precise etiology of autism remains unclear in most cases, from cohort studies, the heritability as a potential cause is estimated to range between 50% and 80%, taking into account consistent environmental risk factors such as parental age, p

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with challenges in social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Early diagnosis is vital for effective interventions. In low- and middle-income countries like Iran, reliable screening tools for ASD are scarce. This study aims to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the "First Year Inventory, version 2" (FYI) for use in Iran. The FYI was translated into Persian using the Watson and DuBay (2019) method. A panel of ten experts assessed its validity. Based on th

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify core joint attention behaviors and examine their network structures and associations with autistic traits in school-aged children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
METHODS: A total of 183 children with ASD (mean age = 7.33 ± 1.11 years; 67.8% male) were recruited. Participants were assessed using the Childhood Joint Attention Rating Scale (C-JARS) and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Network models of joint attention behaviors were estimated to identify central and bridge behaviors relating to core autistic traits.
RESULTS: Network

A critical step toward understanding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is to identify both genetic and environmental risk factors. A number of rare copy number variants (CNVs) have emerged as robust genetic risk factors for ASD, but not all CNV carriers exhibit ASD and the severity of ASD symptoms varies among CNV carriers. Although evidence exists that various environmental factors modulate symptomatic severity, the precise mechanisms by which these factors determine the ultimate severity of ASD are still poorly understood. Here, using a mouse heterozygous for Tbx1 (a gene encoded in 22q11.2 CNV

Over the past 5 years, a great deal of information about the early course of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has emerged from longitudinal prospective studies of infants at high risk for developing ASD based on a previously diagnosed older sibling. The current article describes early ASD symptom presentations and outlines the rationale for defining a new disorder, Early Atypical Autism Spectrum Disorder (EA-ASD) to accompany ASD in the new revision of the ZERO TO THREE Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-5) (in press) alter

There is still no effective treatment that addresses the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), including social and communication deficits. A comprehensive body of evidence points to the cholinergic system, including alpha7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7-nAChRs), as a potential target of pharmacotherapy. A promising approach is based on positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of these receptors due to their advantages over direct agonists. Nevertheless, α7 n-AChR ligands have not been widely studied in the context of autism. Therefore, using one of the most widely used rodent

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restrictive and repetitive behavior followed by impairment in social, verbal, and non-verbal interaction and communication. Valproic acid (VPA) is a well-known anti-epileptic drug, but its prenatal exposure to animals causes social impairment, neurotransmitters imbalance, and neuroinflammation with ASD-like phenotypes. Syringic acid (SA) is a polyphenolic compound with anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, and neuromodulator activity. The purpose of study was to investigate the protective

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction, and repetitive and stereotypical patterns of behavior. Previously, a common physiopathological pathway, involving the control of synaptic protein synthesis, was proposed as a convergence point in ASD. In particular, a role for local mRNA translation activated by class I metabotropic glutamate receptor type 5 (mGluR5) was suggested in genetic syndromes with autistic signs and in the prenatal exposition to the valproate model of autism. However,

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) often display symptoms from other diagnostic categories. Studies of clinical and psychosocial outcome in adult patients with ASDs without concomitant intellectual disability are few. The objective of this paper is to describe the clinical psychiatric presentation and important outcome measures of a large group of normal-intelligence adult patients with ASDs.
METHODS: Autistic symptomatology according to the DSM-IV-criteria and the Gillberg & Gillberg research criteria, patterns of comorbid psychopathology and psychosocial outcome w

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Whilst shy, socially anxious or socially withdrawn children in nonclinical community samples report lower friendship quality (FQ) than nonanxious children, no study has examined the FQ of clinically anxious children. The aim of the study was to examine the FQ of children with anxiety disorders; and whether it differs for clinical children with or without a diagnosis of social phobia (SP).
DESIGN: The study design was cross-sectional self-report.
METHODS: Clinical children - 39 anxiety-disordered children with SP and 28 anxiety-disordered children without SP (No-SP)

We aimed to determine the association between perceived paternal relationships and mental health and social functioning among adults in the community. Data were drawn from the National Comorbidity Survey (N = 8098), a nationally representative sample of adults aged 15 to 54 years in the United States. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess the relationships between quality of paternal relationship in childhood and current mental disorders, quality of current social relationships, and attachment style. Poor paternal relationship was associated with a significantly increased l
