Youths with ADHD with and without tic disorders: comorbid psychopathology, executive function and social adjustment.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorders (TD) commonly co-occur. Clarifying the psychiatric comorbidities, executive functions and social adjustment difficulties in children and adolescents of ADHD with and without TD is informative to understand the developmental psychopathology and to identify their specific clinical needs. This matched case-control study compared three groups (n=40 each) of youths aged between 8 and 16 years: ADHD with co-occurring TD (ADHD+TD), ADHD without TD (ADHD-TD) and typically developing community controls. Both ADHD groups had more co-occur

Preferred Sources of Health-Risk Information About Cigarettes, e-Cigarettes, and Waterpipes Among Adolescents in Germany: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Large School-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent nicotine use remains a major public health concern, particularly in the context of increasing e-cigarette uptake and gaps in tobacco-control communication. Effective prevention requires evidence on the information channels through which adolescents prefer to receive risk information about tobacco and nicotine products. OBJECTIVES: This study examined adolescents' preferred sources for receiving information about the health risks of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and waterpipes in Germany, and assessed differences by age, gender, school type, and nicotine-use status. DESIGN:

Behavioral and social competency profiles of stutterers.

PURPOSE: To investigate the behavioral and social competency profiles of individuals who stutter and to compare them with persons who do not stutter, according to their parents; to correlate the behavioral and the social competence performances with the severity of stuttering. METHODS: Sixty-four participants, aged 6 to 18 years, of both genders, were divided into two groups: the study group (SG), composed of 32 individuals with persistent developmental stuttering, and the control group (CG), composed of 32 fluent individuals. The procedures used were fluency assessment, stuttering severity i

Health-related stigma: rethinking concepts and interventions.

As a feature of many chronic health problems, stigma contributes to a hidden burden of illness. Health-related stigma is typically characterized by social disqualification of individuals and populations who are identified with particular health problems. Another aspect is characterized by social disqualification targeting other features of a person's identity-such as ethnicity, sexual preferences or socio-economic status-which through limited access to services and other social disadvantages result in adverse effects on health. Health professionals therefore have substantial interests in recog

Assessing coercive control in intimate partner relationships: psychometric validation and clinical thresholds of a French version of the Coercive Control Screening Scale (CCSS-F).

Background: Coercive control is increasingly conceptualized as a chronic relational pattern of domination that may function as a mechanism of traumatization over time. Sustained exposure to intimidation, isolation, surveillance, and credible threat has been linked to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), and depressive symptomatology. Despite its relevance for trauma-informed assessment, no validated French-language instrument exists, and no empirically derived cutoff score has been established for the original Coercive Control Screening Scale (CCSS).Objective: This stud

Promoting health information-seeking behaviour prior to vaccination decisions.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research consistently links vaccination knowledge with increased vaccination intention and uptake. However, many health campaigns rely on one-way communication, limiting patient engagement. Patient-centered care promotes active health information-seeking, enabling informed vaccination decisions. This study series developed and evaluated novel interventions to encourage active health information-seeking behaviour and assessed their impact on vaccination and infectious disease knowledge. METHODS AND MEASURES: In Study 1, we created and tested a behavioural paradigm simulatin

What Gave Us Strength: Perspectives From Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services Staff on Working During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited evidence on the social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) needs of staff working at Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) in Australia. The current study employed qualitative research methods to explore ACCHS staff's experience during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on their SEWB, and to identify factors that provided strength. METHODS: Yarning Circles and one-on-one Yarns were employed to explore clinical and non-clinical ACCHS staff's experiences. Participants included staff who identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, or were

Dynamic causal modeling of cerebello-cerebral connectivity when sequencing trait-implying actions.

Prior studies suggest that the cerebellum contributes to the prediction of action sequences as well as the detection of social violations. In this dynamic causal modeling study, we explored the effective connectivity of the cerebellum with the cerebrum in processing social action sequences. A first model aimed to explore functional cerebello-cerebral connectivity when learning trait/stereotype-implying action sequences. We found many significant bidirectional connectivities between mentalizing areas of the cerebellum and the cerebrum including the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) and medial pre

To see ourselves as others see us: an experimental integration of the intra and interpersonal consequences of self-protection in social anxiety disorder.

The current study investigated the mechanism through which safety behaviors perpetuate perceived and actual negative social outcomes hypothesized to maintain social anxiety disorder (SAD). Eighty individuals diagnosed with generalized SAD took part in a "getting acquainted" conversation with a trained experimental confederate. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a safety behavior reduction plus exposure condition (SB + EXP) or a graduated exposure (EXP) control condition and completed a 2nd conversation with the same interaction partner. Mediation analyses revealed that particip

Sperm donor limits that control for the 'relative' risk associated with the use of open-identity donors.

The majority of countries that support the use of donor insemination (DI) in artificial reproductive technology (ART) limit the number of children born from one donor. The setting of these donor limits, though intended to control for the risk of inadvertent half-sibling unions between the offspring of anonymous donors, actually have no evidence base. Controlling for the risk of inadvertent half-sibling unions may soon become unnecessary due to the increasing world-wide use of open-identity sperm donors and the revocation of donor anonymity in many countries. With the shift from anonymous to op

Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Initiation and Continuation: a Qualitative Study of Patients Who Received Addiction Consultation and Hospital-Based Providers.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations related to opioid use disorder (OUD) are rising. Addiction consultation services (ACS) increasingly provide OUD treatment to hospitalized patients, but barriers to initiating and continuing medications for OUD remain. We examined facilitators and barriers to hospital-based OUD treatment initiation and continuation from the perspective of patients and healthcare workers in the context of an ACS. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we sought input using key informant interviews and focus groups from patients who received care from an ACS during their hospitalization

Intensified emotion perception in depression: Differences in physiological arousal and subjective perceptions.

People suffering from depression perceive themselves and their surroundings as more negative than healthy ones. An explanation might be that depressed individuals experience negative information as more stressful than non-depressed subjects and, consequently, respond in an amplified manner on a subjective and physiological level. To test this proposition, we presented 41 patients with recurrent depressive episodes and 42 controls with stimuli from the International Affective Picture System split into three valence categories while different parameters of physiological arousal (e.g., heart rate

Enlargement of visual processing regions in social anxiety disorder is related to symptom severity.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with altered brain function and structure, but most structural studies include small samples and findings are mixed. This study compared regional gray matter volume between 48 SAD patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) as well as the relationship between volume and symptom severity. Structural magnetic resonance images from SAD patients and HC were evaluated using standard voxel-based morphometry (VBM) processing in the SPM8 software package. Social anxiety symptom severity was rated in SAD patients by a clinician using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Sc

Can children with autistic spectrum disorders perceive affect in music? An experimental investigation.

BACKGROUND: Children with autistic spectrum disorders typically show impairments in processing affective information within social and interpersonal domains. It has yet to be established whether such difficulties persist in the area of music; a domain which is characteristically rich in emotional content. METHODS: Fourteen children with autism and Asperger syndrome and their age and intelligence matched controls were tested for their ability to identify the affective connotations of melodies in the major or minor musical mode. They were required to match musical fragments with schematic repre

Impact of adolescent social Isolation on increased risk for alcohol intake and aversion-resistant drinking in males and females.

RATIONALE: Adverse experiences during adolescence, especially social isolation, increases risk for alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Previous rodent studies of adolescent social isolation (ASI) encompassed all stages of adolescence and/or maintained isolation into adulthood, limiting identification of vulnerable stages of adolescence. Utilizing males only, or combining the sexes, also may have contributed to contradictory findings. OBJECTIVES: Investigate social isolation restricted to discrete adolescent stages in combination with re-socialization and then persistent alcohol drinking. Determine

Brief induction of loneliness decreases vagal regulation during social information processing.

Perceived social isolation, or loneliness, has been repeatedly linked to numerous adverse health outcomes. Much effort has been directed towards elucidating the mechanisms underlying its effects on the cardiovascular system, which may explain the deleterious effects on morbidity and mortality. It has been previously suggested that perceived social isolation can impair effective parasympathetic regulation and physiological adjustment to the demands of the social environment. Thus, the present study aimed at investigating the causal impact of an induction of loneliness on vagal activity during s

The dark side of social support: understanding the role of social support, drinking behaviors and alcohol outlets for child physical abuse.

The purpose of this study is to examine how parental drinking behavior, drinking locations, alcohol outlet density, and types of social support (tangible, emotional, and social companionship) may place children at greater risk for physical abuse. Data on use of physical abuse, drinking behaviors, types of social support, social networks, and demographic information were collected via telephone interviews with 3,023 parent respondents in 50 cities in California. Data on alcohol outlet density were obtained by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Multilevel Poisson models wer
