Video analysis of interaction in schizophrenia reveals functionally relevant abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits of dyadic social interaction seem to diminish social functioning in schizophrenia. However, most previous studies are of a limited ecological validity due to decontextualized experimental conditions far off from real-world interaction. In this pilot study, we thus exposed participants to a more real-world-like situation to generate new hypotheses for research and therapeutic interventions. METHODS: Dyads of either participants with schizophrenia (n = 21) or control participants without mental disorder (n = 21) were presented with a 5-min emotionally engaging movie. The sub…

Exploring the effects of student leadership on higher vocational students' social and emotional competence: an empirical study from China.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between student leadership and social and emotional competence among higher vocational students, and explored the mediating roles of teacher-student interaction, peer interaction, and learning engagement. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 1,895 higher vocational students in Hubei Province, China. Propensity score matching was used to reduce observable selection bias between students with and without leadership roles, and bootstrap mediation analyses were used to test the indirect pathways. RESULTS: Students holding leadership roles repor

Reputation or Norms? Unravelling the Mechanisms of Eye Cues in Promoting Social Mindfulness.

Eye cues have been shown to promote prosocial behaviours, yet their impact on social mindfulness and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study conducted two experiments using an adapted Social Mindfulness paradigm to investigate the effects of various eye cues on social mindfulness, focusing on reputation management and norm compliance. Experiment 1 compared the effects of eye cues, flowers, and a no-cue condition on social mindfulness behaviours. Experiment 2 further examined the differential effects of direct gaze, closed eyes, and flowers, while assessing both reputation and norm

Being pressed for time leads to treating others as things: Exploring the relationships among time scarcity, agentic and communal orientation and objectification.

Time scarcity has become one of the most ubiquitous phenomena in daily life worldwide. Five studies (total valid N = 1332) examined whether time scarcity elicits people's agentic orientation and dampens their communal orientation, thus increasing the likelihood of objectification towards others. Results suggested that people who perceived time scarcity were more likely to exhibit objectification towards others regardless of whether time scarcity was measured (Studies 1 and 3) or manipulated using either a scenario (Study 2a) or a recall task (Studies 2b and 4). Furthermore, agentic and communa

The effect of social exclusion on the cognitive health of middle-aged and older adults: A systematic review.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the independent and joint effects of social exclusion in three specific domains-economic, social re … ial networks, reduced contact with family and friends, lower engagement in activities, and negative social interactions with cognitive decline. Notably, one study found that older adults experiencing social exclusion in multiple domains simultaneously face even greater cognitive decline. In summary, this review shows that social exclusion in economic, social relatio …

Improvement in social deficits in autism spectrum disorders using a theatre-based, peer-mediated intervention.

Social Emotional NeuroScience Endocrinology Theatre is a novel intervention program aimed at improving reciprocal social interaction in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using behavioral strategies and theatrical techniques in a peer-mediated model. Previous research using a 3-month model showed improvement in face perception, social interaction, and reductions in stress. The current study assessed a 2-week summer camp model. Typically developing peers were trained and paired with ASD youth (8-17 years). Social perception and interaction skills were measured before and after treatment …

Perception matters for clinical perfectionism and social anxiety.

Despite research documenting a relationship between social anxiety and perfectionism, very little research has examined the relationship bet … lf-report, we found that an interaction of personal standards and evaluative concern predicted both social interaction anxiety and fear of scrutiny, but not in the theorized direction. Specifically, we found that self-report of low standards and high evaluative concern was associated with the highest levels of social anxiety, suggesting that when individuals with SA …

Child-directed interaction: prediction of change in impaired mother-child functioning.

The first phase of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), called child-directed interaction, teaches parents to use positive and differential social attention to improve the parent-child relationship. This study examined predictors of change in mother and child functioning during the child-directed interaction for 100 mother-child dyads. The children were 3-6-years-old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder. After establishing that significant improvements occurred in mother report of child disruptive behavior, parenting stress, and parenting practices, these three variables were c

Social anxiety in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

In this study we assessed the behavioral presentation of social anxiety in Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) using a contrast group of Cri du Chat syndrome (CdCS). Behaviors indicative of social anxiety were recorded in twelve children with CdLS (mean age = 11.00; SD = 5.15) and twelve children with CdCS (8.20; SD = 2.86) during social interaction. Lag sequential analysis revealed that participants with CdLS were significantly more likely to evidence behavior indicative of anxiety in close temporal proximity to the point at which they maintained eye contact or spoke. Individuals with CdLS demo…

Social phobia as a comorbid condition in sex offenders with paraphilia or impulse control disorder.

Studies on the prevalence of social anxiety in sex offenders show mixed results. This may be due to social anxiety being heightened only in diagnostic subgroups of sex offenders, namely in paraphiliacs. In study 1, 72 mentally disordered sexual delinquents and 30 controls were screened for social anxiety with the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale by Mattick and Clarke (German versions). In study 2, 55 mentally disordered sexual delinquents were diagnosed with a structured clinical interview. In both studies, sex offenders were categorized as either paraphilic or impu…

Inhibition of Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase Alters Cortical CREB Signaling and Social Behavior in a Rat Model of Schizophrenia.

Social withdrawal is a core negative symptom of schizophrenia and remains poorly understood at the molecular level. Dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system has been implicated in social behavior, yet its downstream signaling mechanisms are not fully characterized. In this context, this study examined the effects of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor, URB597, on CREB expression and its phosphorylation at serine 133 (pCREB) in saline-treated (1 mL/kg, i.p.) or phencyclidine-treated (PCP; 5 mg/kg, i.p., twice a day for 7 days) rats engaged in social interaction. CREB and pCREB ex…

Social trauma engages lateral septum circuitry to occlude social reward.

In humans, traumatic social experiences can contribute to psychiatric disorders1. It is suggested that social trauma impairs brain reward function such that social behaviour is no longer rewarding, leading to severe social avoidance2,3. In rodents, the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model has been used to understand the neurobiology underlying stress susceptibility versus resilience following social trauma, yet little is known regarding its impact on social reward4,5. Here we show that, following CSDS, a subset of male and female mice, termed susceptible (SUS), avoid social interaction wi…

Joint association of frailty and social isolation with depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese adults: a nationwide cohort study.

Frailty and social isolation are common in later life and each has been linked to poor mental health. However, their joint association with incident depressive symptoms, and whether co-occurrence confers risk beyond either factor alone, remains unclear. Participants aged ≥ 45 years without baseline depression and with complete exposure data were included (n = 7330). Frailty was assessed using a 30-item frailty index and defined as ≥ 25. Social isolation was measured by a composite scale (range 0-6) capturing marital status, living alone, frequency of contact with children, recent social partic
