A case of an unexplained eosinophilic myocarditis in a dog.

An 8-year-old spayed female Munsterlander was evaluated for a chronic low grade fever and a two month history of exercise intolerance. On physical examination, tachycardia and a grade II/VI right systolic heart murmur were detected. Echocardiography revealed marked thickening of the atrial and ventricular walls with mixed echogenicity and concentric hypertrophy of the left and right ventricles and equivocal systolic dysfunction. Serum cardiac troponin I level was markedly elevated. Endomyocardial biopsy was attempted; however, the patient arrested during the procedure and resuscitation was uns

Pulmonary artery dissection causing haemothorax in a cat: potential role of Dirofilaria immitis infection and literature review.

A 7-year-old male castrated domestic short-haired cat suddenly died. Gross examination revealed severe right-sided haemothorax with blood clots, four adult filarial nematodes in the blood clots and the caudal vena cava and haemorrhage dissecting into the tunica media of the right pulmonary artery. Histopathological investigation showed fibrosis of the tunica intima and disorganization/fragmentation of the elastic fibres accompanied by fibrous tissue deposition in the tunica media of both branches of pulmonary artery. Degenerative vasculopathy (intimal fibromuscular hyperplasia and medial hyper

Successful treatment of mitral valve endocarditis in a dog associated with 'Actinomyces canis-like' infection.

Infective endocarditis, an inflammation of the endocardial surface due to invasion by an infectious agent, is more common in middle sized to large breed dogs. We herein report a case of mitral valve endocarditis in a 9-year-old male-castrated Weimaraner caused by an Actinomyces canis-like bacterium, not previously reported in association with infection in dogs.

Aortic chondroid neoplasia in two Labrador Retriever dogs.

In the same week, two Labrador Retriever dogs presented to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for cardiac evaluation. The presenting signs in both dogs included: weight loss, weakness, lethargy, and decreased femoral pulses. The first dog presented in cardiogenic shock and biventricular congestive heart failure, which initially responded to treatment; however, the dog was euthanized due to deteriorating clinical condition. In contrast, the second dog had a milder clinical course without signs of congestive heart failure, and remained stable over the 2-month period of clinical

The static electrocardiogram in clinically healthy, anesthetized, zoo-kept black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus).

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate the static electrocardiograms of clinically healthy black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), and suggest normal values. ANIMALS: Thirteen clinically healthy black-tailed prairie dogs were included in the study. They were anesthetized for physical examination, and complete laboratory data including troponin I concentration, thoracic radiographs, echocardiograms, and static ECG were recorded. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Static electrocardiograms were recorded using standard, six-limb leads from each of the 13 apparently healthy prairie dogs

Echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function in cats: Hemodynamic determinants and pattern recognition.

Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction is highly prevalent in cats and is a functional hallmark of feline cardiomyopathy. The majority of cats with hypertrophic, restrictive, and dilated cardiomyopathy have echocardiographic evidence of abnormal LV filling, even during the occult (preclinical) phase. Moderate and severe diastolic dysfunction is an indicator of advanced myocardial disease, is associated with clinical signs including exercise intolerance and congestive heart failure, affects outcome, and influences therapeutic decisions. Therefore, identification and quantification of LV di

Myocardial infarct associated with a partial thickness left atrial tear in a dog with mitral insufficiency.

A 10-year-old male neutered cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a 1-year history of degenerative mitral valve disease presented for dyspnea and severe weakness. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, systolic dysfunction, presumptive myocardial infarction and a left atrial thrombus based on thoracic radiographs, electrocardiogram and echocardiographic findings. Clinical signs also suggested right foreleg embolism. The dog was euthanized due to the grave prognosis and a postmortem evaluation was performed. The postmortem examination confirmed myocardial infarction and was thought to be

Cytological diagnosis of cardiac masses with ultrasound guided fine needle aspirates.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac masses are uncommon in the canine population. When present, an attempt should be made to obtain a definitive diagnosis. Our goal with this case series was to report that as long as anatomic location permits, obtaining fine needle aspirates (FNAs) for cytological evaluation is practical, safe, and may provide a definitive diagnosis. METHODS: Our database has been retrospectively searched for cases where FNA of cardiac masses have been performed. RESULTS: A total of six cases were retrieved. Four dogs were under general anaesthesia and two were sedated. Ultrasound guided tr

Feline heartworm disease: A'Rubik's-cube-like' diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Feline heartworm disease presents a unique diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive challenge for veterinarians. Due to the elusive clinical nature and peculiar physiopathology of heartworm infection in cats, a multistep diagnostic process is mandatory. Clinical signs may be absent or atypical. At the present time there is no single ante mortem diagnostic test that can reach a high level of sensitivity for feline heartworm infection. The most efficient approach for the diagnosis of feline heartworm disease is based upon a synergic association of several tests: thoracic radiography and serum ant

Ventricular septal defect and double-chambered right ventricle in an alpaca.

A 20-month-old male alpaca was referred for evaluation of a cardiac murmur evident since birth. Echocardiography identified a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and a fibro-muscular band causing a stenosis of the right ventricular outflow tract. Right ventricular catheterization and selective angiography confirmed the diagnosis of VSD and double-chambered right ventricle with bidirectional shunting.

Iatrogenic embolization and transcatheter retrieval of a ventricular septal defect occluder in a dog.

A 7-month-old Irish Setter underwent transcatheter therapy of a muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD) and pulmonary valve stenosis. Standard devices for muscular VSD closure could not span the interventricular septum due to right ventricular hypertrophy, and an Amplatzer post-infarction muscular VSD occluder with a wider waist was successfully implanted. Following VSD closure, inflation of the balloon dilation catheter during balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty resulted in iatrogenic embolization of the VSD occluder to the left ventricular outflow tract. Retrieval and reimplantation of the devi

Management of incidentally detected heart murmurs in dogs and cats.

A dog or a cat has an incidentally detected heart murmur if the murmuris an unexpected discovery during a veterinary consultation that was not initially focused on the cardiovascular system. This document presents approaches for managing dogs and cats that have incidentally-detected heart murmurs, with an emphasis on murmur characteristics, signalment profiling, and multifactorial decision-making to choose an optimal course for a given patient.

Stent placement for palliation of cor triatriatum dexter in a dog with suspected patent foramen ovale.

An 11 month old spayed, female dog presented with exercise intolerance and cyanosis upon exertion. Echocardiography revealed an imperforate cor triatriatum dexter with mild tricuspid valve dysplasia, an underfilled right ventricle and significant right to left shunting across a presumptive patent foramen ovale. Balloon dilation of the abnormal atrial membrane was initially successful in creating a communication between the right atrial chambers, but stenosis of the original perforation and persistent clinical signs prompted a second intervention. A balloon expandable biliary stent was placed a

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with suspected pulmonary hypertension in a cat.

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection has previously been reported in the dog, but never in a cat. A 14-month-old Devon Rex cat was presented for echocardiography to evaluate a heart murmur noticed during a routine examination. The pertinent finding was right-sided cardiomegaly in the absence of an atrial septal defect or tricuspid regurgitation; pulmonary hypertension was suspected. A thoracic computed tomographic angiography study identified a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with the lobar veins of the left caudal, right middle, right caudal and accessory lung lobes dra
