[Computed tomograph findings of tissue adjacent to thoracic vertebrae involved by IgG4-related disease].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the computed tomograph (CT) findings of IgG4-related disease (RD) involving soft tissue adjacent to thoracic vertebrae. METHODS: The chest and abdomen CT findings of 22 cases of IgG4-RD proved by orbital pathology and/or laboratory examination were retrospectively reviewed. The CT findings of paravertebral soft tissue in posterior mediastinum and the corresponding follow-up after therapy were primarily observed. RESULTS: Among them, there were 8 males and 2 females with an average age of 57.6 (42-70) years. CT showed diffuse thickening of soft tissue in thoracic parave

Multimodal Imaging Characteristics of a Migrating Oropharyngeal-Spinal Foreign Body in a Cat.

A 2.5 yr old female spayed domestic shorthair presented for acute tetraparesis, dull mentation, and fever. MRI and computed tomography identified a thin linear foreign body extending from the caudal nasopharynx through the atlanto-occipital joint and cervicomedullary junction. Signal changes within the musculature were consistent with myositis, edema, and abscessation. Inflammation and edema surrounded the foreign body, and a dorsal cervical myelopathy extended caudally to the level of C6. Computed tomography attenuation values of the foreign body were most consistent with plant material. Euth

Superscan on Methylene Diphosphonate Skeletal Scintigraphy in Prostatic Adenocarcinoma: A Common Finding but Rare Etiology.

Excessive skeletal radioisotope uptake in relation to soft tissues along with absent or faint activity in the genitourinary tract on skeletal scintigraphy is known as a "superscan." Prostate cancer is the most common cause of superscan in skeletal scintigraphy due to diffuse skeletal metastases. However, prostate cancer may cause secondary renal osteodystrophy leading to metabolic superscan also. Differentiating between these two entities are important as treatment options are different. We, hereby, describe a case of prostatic adenocarcinoma presented with metabolic superscan on methylene dip

Degenerative disease of the lumbosacral spine: disk herniation and stenosis.

Degeneration of the intervertebral disk complex begins early in life and is a consequence of a variety of environmental factors as well as of normal aging. Degeneration of bone and soft tissue spinal elements is the most common cause of spinal stenosis. The term "degeneration" as commonly applied to the spine covers such a wide variety of clinical, radiological and pathological manifestations that the word is really only a symbol of our ignorance. Computed tomography and myelography have long been used for diagnosing the effects of degenerative diseases' of the lumbar spine. Despite the contin

A new approach to Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis by target air-enema CT.

A 48-yr-old man was admitted to our hospital with abdominal discomfort and distension. A barium enema showed multiple radiolucent filling defects in the wall of the ascending colon. Colonic endoscopy revealed numerous round, polypoid masses covered with normal mucosa. These findings suggested Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Target air-enema computed tomography was performed to make a final diagnosis, and demonstrated several gas collections covered with soft tissue in the wall of the ascending colon. This is the first reported case of Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in which multiple ga

Overview of computed tomography of the temporomandibular joint.

Computed tomography of the temporomandibular joint has been shown to be an accurate method of assessing the position of the disk. To date, we have examined over 500 patients with this modality and have found it also to be effective in the evaluation of other osseous and soft tissue abnormalities. An overview of temporomandibular joint pathology is presented, including the range of osteoarthritic changes from spur formation to complete fusion. Anterior dislocation, with and without reduction, and closed lock are demonstrated. A heretofore unreported phenomenon--posterior dislocation of the meni

A paradigm shift in orthognathic surgery? A comparison of navigation, computer-aided designed/computer-aided manufactured splints, and "classic" intermaxillary splints to surgical transfer of virtual orthognathic planning.

PURPOSE: Advances in computers and imaging have permitted the adoption of 3-dimensional (3D) virtual planning protocols in orthognathic surgery, which may allow a paradigm shift when the virtual planning can be transferred properly. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the versatility and precision of innovative computer-aided designed and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) surgical splints, intraoperative navigation, and "classic" intermaxillary occlusal splints for surgical transfer of virtual orthognathic planning. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The protocols consisted of maxillofaci

Choanal polyp originating from the middle turbinate.

Choanal polyps usually originate from the maxillary sinus. Unusual origins such as the sphenoid sinus, ethmoid sinus, nasal septum and hard and soft palate have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a rare case of choanal polyp originating from the middle turbinate that was removed by an endoscopic surgery technique. The computed tomographic findings are described and the literature is reviewed.

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of congenital dislocation of the hips.

Magnetic resonance (MR) images were obtained preoperatively and postoperatively for 12 pediatric patients with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH). The images were compared with arthrograms and computed tomography scans. The MR images were more accurate in defining soft-tissue anatomy, hip position, and obstructive factors to relocation. MR imaging is an efficient diagnostic tool in CDH.

Computed tomography of the nasopharynx and neck.

Computed tomography (CT) is unparalleled for evaluation of the nasopharynx and the neck in comparison with other radiologic modalities. Its ability to demonstrate soft tissue and bone abnormalities has established its role as a primary method of radiologic diagnosis, frequently obviating the need for further radiologic elaboration. Furthermore, in many cases, CT provides distinction among inflammatory, neoplastic, and traumatic conditions.

CT of the esophagus: I. Normal appearance.

The thoracic esophagus is easily demonstrable throughout its entire length on thoracic computed tomography (CT). The soft tissue planes separating the esophagus from its adjacent mediastinal structures are normally distinct. Blurring or distortion of these tissue interfaces is a reliable indicator of disease. The normal CT anatomy of the esophagus and mediastinal relationships are described. Air in the esophagus is considered a normal finding.

Stimulation Modulates Adhesion and Mechanics of Hydrogel Adhesives.

The ability to modulate the adhesion of soft materials on-demand is desired for broad applications ranging from tissue repair to soft robotics. Research effort has been focused on the chemistry and architecture of interfaces, leaving the mechanics of soft adhesives overlooked. Stimuli-responsive mechanisms of smart hydrogels could be leveraged for achieving stimuli-responsive hydrogel adhesives that respond mechanically to external stimuli. Such stimuli-responsive hydrogel adhesives involve complex chemomechanical coupling and interfacial fracture phenomena, calling for mechanistic understandi

Three-dimensional changes in nose and upper lip volume after orthognathic surgery.

Orthognathic surgery aims to improve both the function and facial appearance of the patient. Translation of the maxillomandibular complex for correction of malocclusion is always followed by changes to the covering soft tissues, especially the nose and lips. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the nasal region and upper lip due to orthognathic surgery using combined cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry datasets. Patients who underwent a Le Fort I osteotomy, with or without a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, were included i

An automatic method for enhancing the display of different tissue densities in digital chest radiographs.

Digital chest radiographs are often too bright and/or lack contrast when viewed on a video display. This often occurs in radiographs taken of patients with dense lungs, or when incorrect x-ray exposure techniques or inappropriate image preprocessing operations are performed (eg, by the computed radiography system or laser scanner). This article describes a method to automatically provide brightness and contrast adjustments to selectively enhance either soft or dense tissues. This method reduces viewer interaction and improves displayed image quality. The algorithm analyzes the gray-level histo

Structure of the soft palate and composition of the oral mucous membrane in monkeys.

The soft palate of monkeys (M. irus, mulatta, fasciculata; 2.3 +/- 0.4 kg in weight) was studied morphologically and stereologically. After fixation by perfusion, the tissue was disected free, divided in halves and the halves into 5 segments each, and processed for light, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy. Morphometric techniques and a newly developed computer program for automatic data processing (Mumana) were employed in order to estimate, at the light microscopic level, the volumetric composition of the oral soft palate mucosa. The latter showed a different composition in anter

A Computational Model of Hybrid Trunk-like Robots for Synergy Formation in Anticipation of Physical Interaction.

Trunk-like robots have attracted a lot of attention in the community of researchers interested in the general field of bio-inspired soft robotics, because trunk-like soft arms may offer high dexterity and adaptability very similar to elephants and potentially quite superior to traditional articulated manipulators. In view of the practical applications, the integration of a soft hydrostatic segment with a hard-articulated segment, i.e., a hybrid kinematic structure similar to the elephant's body, is probably the best design framework. It is proposed that this integration should occur at the con

Modeling Soft Tissue Damage and Failure Using a Combined Particle/Continuum Approach.

Biological soft tissues experience damage and failure as a result of injury, disease, or simply age; examples include torn ligaments and arterial dissections. Given the complexity of tissue geometry and material behavior, computational models are often essential for studying both damage and failure. Yet, because of the need to account for discontinuous phenomena such as crazing, tearing, and rupturing, continuum methods are limited. Therefore, we model soft tissue damage and failure using a particle/continuum approach. Specifically, we combine continuum damage theory with Smoothed Particle Hyd

Pharyngeal size and shape during wakefulness and sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

Computed tomography has been used to study the pharyngeal airway during tidal breathing in wakefulness and during obstructive apnoeas in Non-REM sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. In supine subjects, contiguous transverse 10 mm sections were taken perpendicular to the posterior pharyngeal wall with a 2.1 s scan time. Studies during wakefulness showed that the narrowest section of the pharyngeal airspace was in the region posterior to the soft palate and that the minimal airway cross-sectional areas were significantly reduced in the group of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea
