Dominant control of temperature on (sub-)tropical soil carbon turnover.

Carbon storage in soils is important in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the sensitivity of the soil-carbon turnover time (τsoil) to temperature and hydrology forcing is not fully understood. Here, we use radiocarbon dating of plant-derived lipids in conjunction with reconstructions of temperature and rainfall from an eastern Mediterranean sediment core receiving terrigenous material from the Nile River watershed to investigate τsoilin subtropical and tropical areas during the last 18,000 years. We find that τsoil was reduced by an order of magnitude over the last deglacia…

Spinach yield and quality response to elevated soil carbon dioxide.

INTRODUCTION: With the widespread implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, assessing the associated environmental risks has become increasingly important, particularly concerning crop responses to soil carbon dioxide (CO2) leakage. While previous studies have examined plant responses to soil CO2 stress, the implications for crop nutritional quality remain poorly characterized. METHODS: A pot experiment was conducted in Shunyi, Beijing, during autumn 2023 to quantify the effects of CO2 leakage from CCS on the nutritional indicators of leafy vegetables. The experiment includ…

Aromatic pollutants rewire soil microbial carbon fixation via chain elongation.

Widespread aromatic pollutants such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene are traditionally considered to drive soil carbon loss through mineralization and ecotoxicity. Contrary to this view, our study reveals that low concentrations of these pollutants stimulate microbial carbon chain elongation-a previously overlooked carbon conversion pathway producing medium-chain fatty acids, thereby reshaping soil carbon dynamics. Using phased amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, and metaproteomics of soil microcosms amended with these compounds, we demonstrate that aromatic pollutants bidirectiona…

Chain-Length-Selective Hydrolysis of Polyphosphate Fertilizer on Soil Goethite.

The nutrient activity of ammonium polyphosphates (APPs, (NH4)n+2PnO3n+1, n < 20) in soils is closely associated with the minerals and polyphosphate (Poly-P) constitution. Herein, we investigate the differential performances of APP1 (P species of P1-P2) and APP2 (P species of P1-P7) mixed with goethite (O═Fe-OH). Goethite and dissociated Fe3+ both facilitate P-O cleavage, especially for the longer chains from APP2, with a hydrolysis constant (K) increase of 209% in a well-fitted first-order model. The terminal P-O bond lengths of Poly-Ps increase by 0.02-0.04 Å after being adsorbed. Subsequentl…

Eco-evolutionary dynamics of anthelmintic resistance in soil-transmitted helminths.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) of soil-transmitted helminth parasites against the most widely available drugs is an ongoing concern for both human-infecting and livestock-infecting species. There has been substantial evidence of AR in livestock but less in humans, which may be due to a variety of reasons. In this paper, we develop an eco-evolutionary model that couples the life cycle of these parasites with their underlying evolution in a single biallelic genetic locus that confers resistance to treatment drugs. We determine the critical treatment frequency needed to effectively eliminate the po…

Different mulch films, consistent results: soil fauna responses to microplastic.

Agricultural activities contribute to plastic pollution, with unintentional introduction and intentional use of plastic mulch films leading to the accumulation of microplastic particles in soils. The lack of removal techniques and scarce information on the effects on soil organisms, especially for biodegradable mulch films, necessitate an assessment of potential effects. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of mulch film microplastic on soil fauna by investigating reproduction output and subcellular responses before and after recovery from exposure. Two common soil organisms, Folsomia can…

Test Soil and Material Affinity for Reusable Device Cleaning Validations.

While selecting the test variables for a cleaning validation for reusable medical devices, the manufacturer must provide a simulative and clinically representative challenge for the device. An appropriate challenge must be identified with care so as not to overchallenge the cleaning process by selecting the worst case for every variable, thus leading to an impossible validation or unrealistic processing requirements. To appropriately select the testing variables, an understanding of the challenge to the cleaning process is important. The relationship among device material, test soil, and appli…

Analyzing atmospheric plasma's potential for diesel soil remediation: Insightful mechanisms.

The remediation of diesel-contaminated soil is a critical environmental concern, driving the need for effective solutions. Recently, the methodology of Non-thermal Atmospheric Plasma (NTAP) technology, which is equipped with a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) electrode and has become a feasible approach, was proven to be viable. The reactive species from the plasma were exposed to the contaminated soil in this investigation using the NTAP technique. The reacted soil was then extracted using dichloromethane, and the amount of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) removed was assessed. Investigati…

Harnessing rhizobacteria: Isolation, identification, and antifungal potential against soil pathogens.

Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in plant health by providing natural antagonism against soil-borne fungi. The use of rhizobacteria has been viewed as an alternative to the use of chemicals that could be useful for the integrated management of plant diseases and also increase yield in an environmentally friendly manner. However, there is limited understanding of the specific mechanisms by which rhizobacteria inhibit these pathogens and the diversity of rhizobacterial species involved. This study aims to isolate, identify, and characterize rhizobacteria with antagonistic activities against soi…

Soil Sample Analysis of Bacillus anthracis Contaminated Animal Burial Sites.

Environmental contamination with Bacillus anthracis spores poses clear threats to livestock that play key roles in the economies of pastoral communities. Regular monitoring of contaminated sites is particularly important in anthrax-endemic parts of the world, such as Kars province in eastern Türkiye, where the Veterinary Microbiology Department of Kafkas University has conducted an anthrax surveillance programme for over 30 years. We reviewed the microbiological results of 232 soil samples collected during 2009-2023, from sites known to be contaminated with B. anthracis spores following burial…

Seasonal Oxygenation of Contaminated Floodplain Soil Releases Zn to Porewater.

Soil zinc contamination is a major threat to water quality and sensitive ecosystems. While Zn itself is not redox-active in soils, transitions in soil redox conditions may promote mobilization of Zn from common Zn hosts, including Mn(IV)/Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides and sulfide precipitates, leading to elevated concentrations of dissolved Zn in surface and groundwater and thus a potential increase in Zn transport and uptake. Here, we examined the impacts of hydrologic fluctuations and coupled redox transitions on Zn partitioning in contaminated riparian soil in a mountain watershed. We found that oxyg…

Bacterial assemblages imply methylmercury production at the rice-soil system.

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients …

Degradation of 5-Dialkylamino-Substituted Chlorsulfuron Derivatives in Alkaline Soil.

Sulfonylurea herbicides are widely used as acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors due to their super-efficient activity. However, some sulfonylurea herbicides show toxicity under crop rotation due to their long degradation time, for example, chlorsulfuron. Our research goal is to obtain chlorsulfuron-derived herbicides with controllable degradation time, good crop safety and high herbicidal activities. Based on our previously reported results in acidic soil, we studied the degradation behaviors of 5-dialkylamino-substituted chlorsulfuron derivatives (NL101-NL108) in alkaline soil (pH 8.39). Th…

Mobilization of contaminants: Potential for soil remediation and unintended consequences.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Land treatment has become an essential waste management practice. Therefore, soil becomes a major source of contaminants including organic chemicals and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) which enter the food chain, primarily through leaching to potable water sources, plant uptake, and animal transfer. A range of soil amendments are used to manage the mobility of contaminants and subsequently their bioavailability. Various soil amendments, like desorbing agents, surfactants, and chelating agents, have been applied to increase contaminant mobility and bioavailability. These mobilizing agents are…
