Design of 222 nm UV-C experimental device and experiment on the effect of radiation on the quality of post-harvested fresh tomatoes.

To investigate the effect of safe and green 222 nm UV-C irradiation on the sterilization, disinfection, and storage characteristics of fresh tomatoes, a new 222 nm UV-C irradiation experimental device was developed. Firstly, in an effort to improve the irradiation efficiency and service life of the lamp tube, a lamp with an active convection heat transfer system, parabolic reflector, and adjustable irradiation parameters was designed. Furthermore, a tomato tray capable of reciprocating motion was made to promote uniform UV-C irradiation on tomatoes. Then, a study was conducted on the effect of

Influence of Temperature on Salicylate-Induced Components in Tomato Plants Immune System under Invasion with Root-Knot Nematode Meloidogyne incognita.

The tomato gene Mi-1,2 is currently the only commercially available source of resistance to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita, which loses activity when soil temperatures exceed 28°C. The study aimed to investigate the components of the tomato immune system to root-knot nematode associated with salicylic acid (SA) at elevated (34°C) and normal (25°C) temperatures. The obtained results showed that the Mi-1,2-mediated immune response is disrupted at 34°C. At elevated temperatures in plants infested with nematodes, the synthesis of salicylic acid and the activity of phenylalanine ammon

High flavonoid-producing tomato reduces whitefly phloem-feeding efficiency by inducing reactive oxygen species accumulation and callose deposition.

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is economically one of the most threatening pests in tomato cultivation, which not only causes direct damage but also transmits many viruses. Breeding whitefly-resistant tomato varieties is a promising and environmentally friendly method to control whitefly populations in the field. Accumulating evidence from tomato and other model systems demonstrates that flavonoids contribute to plant resistance to herbivorous insects. Previously, we found that high flavonoid-producing tomato line deterred whitefly oviposition and settling behaviours, and

Applying novel economic simple green sample preparation procedures on natural and industrial specimens for chromatographic determination of insecticidal residues.

Spraying a tertiary blend of the insecticides (hexythiazox, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam), on tomato fruits, is a routine in agriculture-attentive countries. A simple green sample preparation technique was developed and applied to the field samples. Specific HP-TLC and RP-HPLC methodologies are established to estimate the residual insecticides and applied to the prepared field specimens. In the planner chromatographic methodology, methanol:chloroform:glacial acetic acid:triethyl amine (8.5:1.5:0.2:0.1, v/v) is recommended as a mobile system. Mutualistic interaction of native Serratia marcescens UENF-22GI with Trichoderma longibrachiatum UENF-F476 boosting seedling growth of tomato and papaya.

A plethora of bacteria-fungal interactions occur on the extended fungal hyphae network in soil. The mycosphere of saprophytic fungi can serve as a bacterial niche boosting their survival, dispersion, and activity. Such ecological concepts can be converted to bioproducts for sustainable agriculture. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that the well-characterised beneficial bacterium Serratia marcescens UENF-22GI can enhance plant growth-promoting properties when combined with Trichoderma longibrachiatum UENF-F476. The cultural and cell interactions demonstrated S. marcescens and T. longibrach

Light-dependent activation of HY5 promotes mycorrhizal symbiosis in tomato by systemically regulating strigolactone biosynthesis.

Light quality affects mutualisms between plant roots and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs), which modify nutrient acquisition in plants. However, the mechanisms by which light systemically modulates root colonization by AMFs and phosphate uptake in roots remain unclear. We used a range of approaches, including grafting techniques, protein immunoblot analysis, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and dual-luciferase assays, to unveil the molecular basis of light signal transmission from shoot to root that mediates arbuscule development and phosphate uptake in t

Nutritional deficiency in scarlet eggplant limits its growth by modifying the absorption and use efficiency of macronutrients.

The intensity damages caused by nutritional deficiency in growing plants can vary with nutrients. The effects caused by nutrient omission in the plant nutritional efficiency in relation to the absorption and use of the missing nutrient, and the reasons why these damages reflect in other nutrients have not yet been reported in the culture of scarlet eggplant. A better understanding of the nutritional mechanisms involved may clarify why certain nutrients cause greater limitations than other during plants growth. Thus, this study was designed with the aim of evaluating the damages caused by macro

Physiological responses of plants and mites to salicylic acid improve the efficacy of spirodiclofen for controlling Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on greenhouse tomatoes.

Salicylic acid (SA) is a signaling molecule that can induce plant resistance to certain herbivores. Although the role of jasmonic acid in mediating mite-tomato plant interactions has been well studied, the role of salicylic acid has not. This study examined how the application of exogenous SA, via its effects on tomato plant physiology, alters the activity of mite digestive enzymes, mite energy reserves, and mite susceptibility to spirodiclofen. Enzymatic activity-including superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase-alon

Companion planting with French marigolds protects tomato plants from glasshouse whiteflies through the emission of airborne limonene.

Horticulturalists and gardeners in temperate regions often claim that planting marigolds next to tomato plants protects the tomatoes from the glasshouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood). If shown to hold true, this technique could be used in larger-scale tomato production, protecting the crop and helping to introduce greater plant diversity into these agro-ecosystems. Here we present two large-scale glasshouse trials corresponding to the two main ways growers are likely to use marigolds to control whiteflies. In the first, marigolds are grown next to tomato throughout the growing

Basal differences in the transcriptional profiles of tomato leaves associated with the presence/absence of the resistance gene Mi-1 and changes in these differences after infestation by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

The tomato Mi-1 gene mediates plant resistance to whitefly Bemisia tabaci, nematodes, and aphids. Other genes are also required for this resistance, and a model of interaction between the proteins encoded by these genes was proposed. Microarray analyses were used previously to identify genes involved in plant resistance to pests or pathogens, but scarcely in resistance to insects. In the present work, the GeneChip™ Tomato Genome Array (Affymetrix®) was used to compare the transcriptional profiles of Motelle (bearing Mi-1) and Moneymaker (lacking Mi-1) cultivars, both before and after B. tabaci

Positive and Negative Regulation of the Virulence-Associated Coronafacoyl Phytotoxin in the Potato Common Scab Pathogen Streptomyces scabies.

The potato common scab pathogen Streptomyces scabies produces N-coronafacoyl-l-isoleucine (CFA-Ile), which is a member of the coronafacoyl family of phytotoxins that are synthesized by multiple plant pathogenic bacteria. The CFA-Ile biosynthetic gene cluster contains a regulatory gene, cfaR, which directly controls the expression of the phytotoxin structural genes. In addition, a gene designated orf1 encodes a predicted ThiF family protein and is cotranscribed with cfaR, suggesting that it also plays a role in the regulation of CFA-Ile production. In this study, we demonstrated that CfaR is an
