Burn injury and incidence of psychiatric disorders: A retrospective cohort study of 18,198 patients from Germany.

AIMS: The goal of this study was to investigate the association between burn injury and the incidence of psychiatric disorders in patients f … orders (i.e. depression, anxiety disorders, reaction to severe stress and adjustment disorders, and somatoform disorders), sex, age, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index. The association between burn injury and the incidence of psychiatric disorders was studied using Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariable Cox regression models. RESULTS: The study included 9099 patients …

The Chronic Overlapping Pain Condition Screener.

Ten Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions (COPCs) are currently recognized by the National Institutes of Health Pain Consortium (eg, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic migraine headache, and chronic low back pain). These conditions affect millions of Americans; however, assessing these conditions, their co-occurrence, and their relationship to treatment has proven challenging due to time constraints and a lack of standardized measures. We present a Chronic Overlapping Pain Condition-Screener (COPC-S) that is logic-driven, efficient, and freely available in electronic format to nonprofit entities.

The classification and nomenclature of 'medically unexplained symptoms': conflict, performativity and critique.

Persistent medically unexplained symptoms (MUS)--including the many syndromes that fall under this umbrella--involve a discrepancy between professional knowledge and lay experience and are often associated with latent or explicit dynamics of conflict. Although this conflictual dimension has been amply documented, little critical attention has been paid to how nomenclature and classification feed into the conflictual dynamic and are informed by it in turn. In this paper I engage with this question from a social-theoretical perspective informed by the concept of performativity. The paper offers

[Sexual dissatisfaction and somatic complaints in male infertility].

Several relevant sociodemographic and psychological variables were assessed in addition to clinical and andrological examinations in order to find predictors for sexual satisfaction and somatisation in 68 infertile men of involuntarily childless couples. Subjects reported relatively high average levels of both sexual satisfaction and somatisation, with considerable variance between subjects. Multiple regression analyses revealed that neither age, attitudes towards sexuality, nor andrological findings had an influence on sexual satisfaction. However, an inverse relationship between sexual satis

MMPI screening scales for somatization disorder.

44 items on the MMPI were identified which appear to correspond to some of the symptoms in nine of the 10 groups on the Perley-Guze checklist for somatization disorder (hysteria). This list was organized into two scales, one reflecting the total number of symptoms endorsed and the other the number of organ systems with at least one endorsed symptom. Full MMPIs were then obtained from 29 women with primary affective disorder and 37 women with somatization disorder as part of a follow-up study of a consecutive series of 500 psychiatric clinic patients seen at Washington University. Women with th

Mianserin and chronic pain: a double-blind placebo-controlled process and outcome study.

There is evidence that antidepressants may have an analgesic effect in chronic pain. To replicate this effect and to throw light on the processes involved, a 12-week cross-over double-blind trial of mianserin versus placebo was carried out in 4 diagnostic groups: A) depressive patients without pain complaints (n = 8), B) depressive patients with chronic organic pain (n = 8), C) patients with somatoform pain disorder and vital signs of depression (n = 11) and D) patients with chronic organic pain without depression (n = 8). Although a mianserin-induced antidepressant effect in group A was evide

Family history study of the familial coaggregation of borderline personality disorder with axis I and nonborderline dramatic cluster axis II disorders.

The purpose of this study was to assess the familial coaggregation of borderline personality disorder (BPD) with a full array of axis I disorders and four axis II disorders (antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and sadistic personality disorder) in the first-degree relatives of borderline probands and axis II comparison subjects. Four hundred and forty-five inpatients were interviewed about familial psychopathology using the Revised Family History Questionnaire-a semistructured interview of demonstrated reliability. Of these 445 s

Specialized Biopsychosocial Care in Inpatient Somatic Medicine Units-A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Specialized biopsychosocial care concepts are necessary to overcome the dualism between physical and psychosocial treatment in acute care hospitals. For patients with complex and chronic comorbid physical and mental health problems, neither standardized psychiatric/psychosomatic nor somatic care units alone are appropriate to their needs. The " N uremberg I ntegrated P sychosomatic A cute Unit" (NIPA) has been developed to integrate treatment of both, psychosocial and physical impairments, in an acute somatic care setting. METHOD: NIPA has been established in inpatient internal

[FUNCTIONAL SOMATIC SYNDROMES AMONG ETHIOPIAN IMMIGRANTS IN ISRAEL].

INTRODUCTION: The psychiatric classifications of disease (DSMIV; ICD-10) relate to a family of high incidence somatoform disorders whose use isn't uniform and cannot be measured. DSM-5 presents the term "cultural conceptualization of distress", which attempts to describe the cultural construct and its influences on mental distress and symptom presentation. Somatization among immigrants poses a diagnostic, treatment and research challenge due to cultural differences such as wrong understanding of their symptoms that may lead to misdiagnosis and to prescribing wrong and possibly harmful treatmen…

Somatic presentation of DSM III psychiatric disorders in primary care.

This paper describes a study assessing the correlates and possible determinants of 'somatisation' by patients consulting their family doctor with a new illness. Operational criteria of 'somatisation' are given and the relationship between DSM III psychiatric disorders and physical illness are described. The epidemiological findings that are presented illustrate that 'somatisation' is a common phenomenon and accounts for a substantial proportion of 'hidden psychiatric morbidity' in primary care.

Abnormal neurological exam findings in individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) versus psychiatric and healthy controls.

In those with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), cognitive and emotional disturbances are often misattributed to that preexisting injury. However, causal determinations of current symptoms cannot be conclusively determined because symptoms are often nonspecific to etiology and offer virtually no differential diagnostic value in postacute or chronic phases. This population-based study examined whether the presence of abnormalities during neurological examination would distinguish between mTBI (in the chronic phase), healthy controls, and selected psychiatric conditions. Retrospect

Symptom trajectories and their predictive factors in psychiatric inpatients with depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression presents with heterogeneity in symptom trajectories, complicating individualized treatment. Identifying distinct classes of symptom trajectories and their predictors may enable earlier intervention for those at greatest risk of poor outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed 620 inpatients with depression drawn from two independent naturalistic samples. Using Growth Mixture Modeling, latent classes of symptom trajectories were identified. Using baseline clinical scores and anamnestic data, we trained a regression model to predict membership in the non-responding class in the main s

CLINICAL, PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC AND BIORHYTHMOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS, COMORBID WITH CARDIOVASCULAR PATHOLOGY.

The spread of depressive disorders is extra high nowadays. Depressive disorders are widespread mental disorders in the structure of mental pathology, both causes of psychiatrists' visit, and causes of medical aid. The presence of depressive syndrome in patients with cardiovascular system leads to deterioration patient's condition and adaptive abilities and aggravates somatic abnormality. Adequate therapy causes their reduction, prevention of recurrence and decompansation of comorbid somatic pathology, and eliminates severe medical and prevents social consequences. The study of clinical aspects

Correlation Between Physical and Psychosocial Findings in a Population of Temporomandibular Disorder Patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the correlation between RDC/TMD Axis I and Axis II diagnoses and whether pain could mediate a possible correlation between these two variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of both RDC/TMD axes were collected from 737 consecutive patients who sought TMD advice at the University of Padova, Italy. A descriptive analysis was used to report the frequencies of Axis I and II diagnoses, and Spearman test was performed to assess the correlation between the axes. Subsequently, the sample was divided into two groups (painful vs nonpainful TMD). Frequencies were reported using descript
