Measuring the psychological restorative quality of urban spaces: a vision language model-based method.

Well-designed urban environments crucially mitigate stress and enhance mental well-being through their restorative qualities. However, subjective surveys lack spatial scalability, while objective machine learning often fails to capture the complexity of human perceptual experiences. To address this gap, this study proposes a hybrid framework based on Vision Language Models (VLMs) and human experiences to assess the restorative quality of urban spaces. Using Shenzhen, China as a case study, we gathered subjective and objective knowledge from PRS-11 surveys and ChatGPT-4 descriptions of 566 stre

HSFSurv: A hybrid supervision framework at individual and feature levels for multimodal cancer survival analysis.

Multimodal data play a significant role in survival analysis, with pathological images providing morphological information about tumors and genomic data offering molecular insights. Leveraging multimodal data for survival analysis has become a prominent research topic. However, the heterogeneity of data poses significant challenges to multimodal integration. While existing methods consider interactions among features from different modalities, the heterogeneity of feature spaces often hinders performance in survival analysis. In this paper, we propose a hybrid supervised framework for survival

Locomotion-dependent use of geometric and body cues in humans mapping 3D space.

The ability to represent locations across multiple dimensions of space is a core function of cognitive maps. While the influence of boundary-dependent environmental geometry on spatial representations has been extensively studied in 2D spaces, less is known about the role of boundaries for volumetric spatial memory. Research in humans and other animals has demonstrated distinct processing of the vertical and horizontal spatial dimensions, likely related to species-specific modes of locomotion. Here, we investigate whether different locomotion modes, flying and walking, affect the use of vertic

Analysis of the cytokine profiles of the synovial fluid in a normal temporomandibular joint: preliminary study.

The purpose of this study was to compare the cytokine profiles of the synovial fluid from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) spaces of normal individuals and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. Thirty-four patients with planned orthognathic surgery did not present abnormalities of the TMJ on magnetic resonance images and radiographs and did not show the symptoms identified by the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC-TMD); as a result, they were assigned to the control group. Twenty-two patients who sought treatment for TMD during the same period were assigned to the TMD group. Synov

Strategic Inversion: How Refugees Reconfigure Everyday Resistance under Benevolent Oppression.

What does everyday resistance look like among dominated populations experiencing paternalistic care rather than extraction? Research on everyday resistance emerged from contexts where power extracts surplus from the oppressed. In this scholarship, the backstage is a space where the dominated cultivate hidden transcripts to cope with oppression, while the frontstage, where performances are enacted to those in power, is primary. Inversions of this order, when they occur, are momentary. Using ethnographic fieldwork in two Tanzanian refugee camps, we show that under benevolent oppression-control j

Topological Dirac Semimetallic Phase in Heusler-Type Li2YZ (Y = Zn or Cd and Z = Ge, Sn, or Pb) Compounds: A First-Principles Investigation.

Topological Dirac semimetals with robust surface states have drawn significant interest in condensed matter research, as they exhibit unique transport properties. Heusler compounds have emerged as an attractive platform offering a wide range of tunability in their electronic properties, ranging from semiconductors to semimetals, along with spin-orbit coupling-induced nontrivial topological states as well as crystalline symmetry-protected band crossings. These features position them as ideal candidates for investigating topological phases, including Dirac semimetallic behavior. In this study, w

A Reflexive Thematic Analysis Exploring the Experiences of People Using the Curable App for Chronic Pain.

Pain management apps are gaining popularity for providing timely, accessible care. However, digital health intervention research is still in its infancy, with a limited understanding of how users experience and make meaning of these tools. This study explores users' experiences with the Curable app, considering its impact and the influence of contextual factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online with 12 Curable app users for chronic pain. Transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis through a critical realist lens. Five themes were conceptualised: (1) The space be

Investigating the impact of early deafness on learned action-effect contingency for action linked to peripheral sensory effects.

Investigating peripheral visual processing in individuals with early auditory deprivation is a critical research area in the field of neuroscience, since it helps understanding the phenomenon of sensory adaptation and brain plasticity after sensory loss. Prior research has already demonstrated that the absence of auditory input, which is crucial to detect events occurring out of the central egocentric visual space, leads to an improved processing of visual and tactile stimuli occurring in peripheral regions of the sensory space. Nevertheless, no prior studies have explored whether such enhance

Native nephrectomies in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) will undergo a native nephrectomy in their lifetime. These can be emergent or planned and the indications can range from space for kidney transplant, pain, hematuria and frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Due to the diverse nature of presentations, there is a lack of certainty about outcomes and optimal management. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate preoperative indications and perioperative/postoperative complications in this patient cohort. METHODS: This retrospective review included

Spatial configuration of cultural landscape facilities in Shandong's Yellow River corridor: a rural living circle perspective.

The rural cultural landscapes in the Yellow River Basin, as an important part of the blue-green infrastructure, not only provide ecological services and public spaces, but also carry the function of regional cultural inheritance. The spatial layout of rural cultural landscapes deeply aligns with the multi-level living circles of residents, and has a significant impact on the organization of landscape spaces and social ecological resilience in rural areas. This study took 14,502 administrative villages in 25 counties (cities and districts) along the Yellow River in Shandong Province as the rese

Reflections on the Journal of Applied Psychology for 1989 to 1994: Changes in major research themes and practices over 25 years.

Informal observations concerning journal content indicates that research investigating organizational behavior topics, including work on the structure of groups and determinants and consequences of group process along with the role of leadership in groups, has increased. Some topics have disappeared (e.g., job analysis, human factors, union-related work, consumer behavior) and others are declining (e.g., research methods, psychometrics). Perhaps the biggest change is in the length of articles, which is mostly a function of the inclusion of greater numbers of references and appendix material. P

Working memory and aided AAC display design options for students with intellectual disabilities.

Working memory (WM) plays an important role when using external communication aids. Various stimuli can be utilized to reduce one's cognitive load when selecting symbols on a grid display. The current empirical findings concerning the benefits of such aids for children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are inconclusive. This study seeks to fill this gap in scholarly research by investigating the relationship between WM and different stimuli to identify effective grid designs. The sample consists of 80 students who completed a series of WM tasks before being assigned a specific grid

Changes in Life-Space Mobility With Loss of Relatives and Friends Among Older Adults: Results From the UAB Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increasing age brings a greater risk of death of friends and family (hereafter referred to as loss) potentially impacting individuals' life-space mobility (LSM) trajectory. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the UAB study of aging, we examined differences in LSM trajectories of 1,000 community-dwelling older Alabamians (65 + years) with and without loss over 8.5 years. We measured LSM using UAB's Life-Space Assessment (LSA), a validated instrument assessing movement through zones ranging from their bedroom to out of town. We assessed loss every 6 months using a stan
