One hundred ninety one children below 5 years of age suffering from poliomyelitis were analyzed to find out the immunization status and its correlation with the incidence of poliomyelitis. Effects of age, sex, immunization status and seasonal variation on the morbidity and mortality status were studied. The maximum number of cases were admitted during the months of July (23.6%) and August (23.1%). Of 191 cases, 143 (74.9%) had no immunization and 48 (25.1%) were partially immunized. In 31 patients with echinococciasis, the medical history, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects were evaluated. Six of these patients revealed an involvement of the lungs. Their symptoms--deteriorated general condition, pain in the chest, coughing or haemoptysis, were unspecific. Nineteen patients were submitted to surgery; ten patients received intermittent mebendazole. Treatment with this drug resulted in a stabilisation of the patient's condition. In inoperable patients, treatment with benzimidazolene should at least be attempted.

The different radiographical abnormalities of the hand with renal osteodystrophy are demonstrated. The soft tissue immersion low-energy X-ray technique allows early detection of macrostructural changes of spongy and compact bone, irregularities of the cortex, defects and pseudocysts, osteosclerosis as well as calcifications in the soft tissue and arterio sclerosis of patients with chronic renal failure. Imipenem is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits most clinical isolates of staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae, and streptococci, excluding enterococci, at 1 microgram/ml or less. Injuries to the hand are very common in children. Because of children's tremendous capability of repair, fingertip injuries can usually be treated with dressings, and complicated closures with flaps or grafts can be avoided. Fractures are common, and the treating physician must be aware of the various ephiphyseal injuries that can occur in the hand. Because children are so active, if the hand must be immobilized, a long arm cast or valpeau dressing will usually be required.

Few criteria exist for identifying which babies merit special nursing care, and many asymptomatic babies are offered such care unnecessarily. Birth weight is usually used to identify babies in need of special care at birth, but gestational age is a better discriminator. Babies of more than 35 weeks' gestation do not normally require admission to a special care nursery. Those preterm babies who are admitted can usually be discharged at 37 weeks' gestation even if they still weigh less than 2000 g.
