Invasive evaluation of plaque morphology of symptomatic superficial femoral artery stenoses using combined near-infrared spectroscopy and intravascular ultrasound.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the plaque morphology of severe stenoses in the superficial femoral artery (SFA) employing combined near-infrared spectroscopy and intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS). Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of symptomatic peripheral arterial disease. Plaque composition of SFA stenoses has been characterized as primarily fibrous or fibrocalcific by non-invasive and autopsy studies. NIRS has been validated to detect lipid-core plaque (LCP) in the coronary circulation. We imaged severe SFA stenoses with NIRS-IVUS prior to revascularization in 31 pat

Spatiotemporal properties of cortical haemodynamic response to auditory stimuli in sleeping infants revealed by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy.

Multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used as a neuroimaging tool to study functional activation of the developing brain in infants. In this paper, we focus on spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical oxygenation changes during sensory processing in young infants. We use a 94-channel NIRS system to assess the activity of wide regions of the cortex in quietly sleeping three-month-old infants. Auditory stimuli composed of a random sequence of pure tones induced haemodynamic changes not only in the temporal auditory regions, but also in the occipital and frontal regions. Analyses of

Use of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) and near infrared spectroscopy findings in neonates with asphyxia during selective head cooling.

BACKGROUND: Amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) at <6 h is the best single outcome predictor in term infants with perinatal asphyxia at normothermia. Hypothermia treatment has changed the cutoff values for outcome prediction by using time at onset of normal trace and SWC. Cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation changes detected by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during hypothermia treatment in aphyxiated neonates are not a well known issue. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between brain monitoring (amplitude integrated EEG and NIRS) and outcome in as

Bedside monitoring of cerebral blood oxygenation and hemodynamics after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage by quantitative time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of vasospasm is essential for the treatment of delayed ischemic neurological deficits in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We evaluated cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) changes after SAH employing quantitative time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (TR-NIRS) for this purpose. METHODS: We investigated 11 age-matched controls and 14 aneurysmal SAH patients, including 10 patients with WFNS grade V and 4 patients with grade II. Employing TR-NIRS, we measured the cortical oxygen saturation (CoSO(2)) and baseline hemoglobin concentrations in the middle cerebral artery ter

Continuous cardiac output and near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring to assist in management of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Hemodynamic augmentation by increasing cardiac output with dobutamine (DOB) is believed to be a useful method of elevating decreased cerebral blood flow in the territory affected by vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We described the clinical utility of uncalibrated radial artery-based pulse contour cardiac output (APCO) and near-infrared spectroscopy regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO(2)) monitoring for reversing vasospasm symptoms with DOB-induced hyperdynamic therapy. METHODS: Seven consecutive patients who underwent surgical clipping within 24

Quantitative analysis of hemodynamic and metabolic changes in subcortical vascular dementia using simultaneous near-infrared spectroscopy and fMRI measurements.

Subcortical vascular dementia (SVD) is a form of vascular dementia from small vessel disease with white matter lesions and lacunes. We hypothesized that hemodynamic and metabolic changes in the cortex during a simple motor task may reflect the impaired neurovascular coupling in SVD. We used fMRI and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) simultaneously, which together provided multiple hemodynamic responses as well as a robust estimation of the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO(2)). During the task periods, the oxy-hemoglobin, total-hemoglobin, blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) respons

Noninvasive in situ identification and band assignments of some pharmaceutical excipients inside USP vials with FT-near-infrared spectroscopy.

For the manufacture of dosage forms all ingredients must be reliably identified. In this paper, the suitability of FT-NIR spectroscopy to identify potassium sorbate, sodium starch glycollate, calcium ascorbate, calcium carbonate, candelilla wax, maltosextrin, monohydrated and anhydrous lactose inside USP vials was investigated. Differentiation between the anhydrous and monohydrated forms of lactose was found to be possible by studying the regions of the near-infrared spectrum corresponding to the combination and first overtone stretching frequencies of water. The results show unequivocally the

Monitoring regional cerebral oxygen saturation using near-infrared spectroscopy during pulsatile hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass in a neonatal piglet model.

Impairment of cerebral oxygenation in neonates and infants after hypothermic nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) support is well documented. The objectives of this study were: 1) using a neonatal piglet model to continuously monitor the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) by near-infrared spectroscopy during pulsatile hypothermic CPB; and 2) to quantify the pulsatile flow in terms of energy equivalent pressure (EEP). After initiation of CPB, all piglets (n = 5) were subjected to 15 minutes of core cooling, reducing the rectal temperature to 25 degrees C, followed by 60 minutes of

Simultaneous recording of cerebral blood oxygenation changes during human brain activation by magnetic resonance imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Changes in cerebral blood oxygenation due to functional activation of the primary sensorimotor cortex during a unilateral finger opposition task were simultaneously mapped by deoxyhemoglobin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Activation foci along the contralateral central sulcus displayed task-associated increases in MRI signal intensity, indicating a concomitant decrease of the focal concentration of deoxyhemoglobin. This interpretation was confirmed by simultaneous reductions in deoxyhemoglobin measured optically. Since observation

Prefrontal cortex activity of adolescents with problematic smartphone use in response to gains and losses: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has become a widespread problem that is highly prevalent in adolescent population. Previous studies suggest that PSU is associated with impairment in reward processing system. Thus, increased sensitivity to rewards could make individuals more vulnerable to abusive behaviors, such as PSU. However, little is known about its underlying neural mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of reward and punishment processing in adolescents with PSU by evaluating the hemodynamic responses to monetary gains and losses using functional near-infrared

Exploring the neural mechanisms of electroacupuncture for cognitive impairment in depression using functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that is commonly associated with a high risk of recurrence and suicide. One of its core symptoms is cognitive impairment, which can occur during the prodromal, acute (76.9 - 94.0%), and remission phases (32.4 - 44.0%). This impairment substantially contributes to both health and socioeconomic burdens. Recent evidence suggests the therapeutic potential of electroacupuncture; however, its adjunctive efficacy compared with that of standard pharmacotherapy remains ambiguous. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of using

Relationship between cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy signals and intracranial pressure: a systematic scoping review of the human and animal literature.

Objective.Monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) in a clinical environment is critically important to the stability of patients with various acute neurological illnesses and injury including ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, brain tumor, and traumatic brain injury. This is because changes in ICP can cause significant stress on the brain and surrounding tissue through complications such as cerebral ischemia or hemorrhage in the surrounding area. Most ICP measurement techniques are invasive, expensive, and have poor spatial resolution. There has been some preliminary evidence to suggest th

Application of Near Infrared Spectroscopy to Enhance Safety and Individualize Distraction of Severely Contracted Joints in Far-Advanced Dupuytren's Disease.

Background: Slow distraction of contracted joints is a well-established treatment in far-advanced stages of Dupuytren's disease (DD). To assess finger perfusion and avoid malperfusion, we studied near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to evaluate the maximum extent of distraction that would not harm microcirculation to the finger. This technique also allows an optimized treatment in accordance with sufficient blood perfusion during distraction. Methods: Eligible patients with stage IV finger contractures who needed treatment for Dupuytren's contracture were included and prospectively investigated.
