Predicting Voice Disorder Status From Smoothed Measures of Cepstral Peak Prominence Using Praat and Analysis of Dysphonia in Speech and Voice (ADSV).

OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to (1) determine and compare the diagnostic accuracy of a single acoustic measure, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS), to predict voice disorder status from connected speech samples using two software systems: Analysis of Dysphonia in Speech and Voice (ADSV) and Praat; and (2) to determine the relationship between measures of CPPS generated from these programs. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: Measures of CPPS were obtained from connected speech recordings of 100 subjects with voice disorders and 70 nondys

Speech patterns in responses to questions asked by an intelligent virtual agent can help to distinguish between people with early stage neurodegenerative disorders and healthy controls.

Previous research has provided strong evidence that speech patterns can help to distinguish between people with early stage neurodegenerative disorders (ND) and healthy controls. This study examined speech patterns in responses to questions asked by an intelligent virtual agent (IVA): a talking head on a computer which asks pre-recorded questions. The study investigated whether measures of response length, speech rate and pausing in responses to questions asked by an IVA help to distinguish between healthy control participants and people diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzhei

The VOICE-DEP study protocol: Multimodal analysis of voice and speech during medical interviews to support diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring of major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is a severe, recurrent and disabling condition. Although diagnosis and clinical monitoring are based on medical interviews and validated rating scales, voice and speech analysis may provide complementary digital biomarkers reflecting depressive severity and clinical evolution. However, current evidence remains limited by methodological heterogeneity, predominantly cross-sectional designs, limited longitudinal data and underrepresentation of non-English-speaking clinical populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the VOICE-DEP study is to develop and formalize a s

Rhotic Acquisition Is More Rapid in Biofeedback Than Motor-Based Treatment for Residual Speech Sound Disorder: Primary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that can limit children's academic and social participation, with negative consequences for overall well-being. Previous studies have described visual biofeedback as a promising option for RSSD, but results have been inconclusive due to study design limitations and small sample sizes. METHOD: In a preregistered randomized controlled trial, 108 children aged 9-15 years with RSSD affecting American English /ɹ/ were randomly assigned to receive treatment incorporating visual biofeedback (subdivided into ultrasound and

Identifying data elements and key features to design a telerehabilitation system for speech and language disorders in children with hearing impairments in Iran: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Designing and implementing telerehabilitation systems would require the identification of data elements to meet disabled people's needs. An in-depth study on the identification and validation of data elements can help design and implement telerehabilitation systems successfully. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and validate data elements to design a telerehabilitation system for the speech and language disorders of hearing-impaired children in Iran. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in three steps including literature review, focused gro

Predicting Generalized Anxiety Disorder From Impromptu Speech Transcripts Using Context-Aware Transformer-Based Neural Networks: Model Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to automatically detect anxiety disorders from speech could be useful as a screening tool for an anxiety disorder. Prior studies have shown that individual words in textual transcripts of speech have an association with anxiety severity. Transformer-based neural networks are models that have been recently shown to have powerful predictive capabilities based on the context of more than one input word. Transformers detect linguistic patterns and can be separately trained to make specific predictions based on these patterns. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whethe

Internal Cognitive Load Differentially Influences Acoustic and Lexical Context Effects in Speech Perception: Evidence From a Population With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: To overcome variability in spoken language, listeners utilize various types of context information for disambiguating speech sounds. Context effects have been shown to be affected by cognitive load. However, previous results are mixed regarding the influence of cognitive load on the use of context information in speech perception. PURPOSE: We tested a population characterized by an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to better understand the relationship between attention (or internal cognitive load) and context effects. METHOD: The use of acoustic versus lexical prop

Effect of Voice and Articulation Parameters of a Home-Based Serious Game for Speech Therapy in Children With Articulation Disorder: Prospective Single-Arm Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Articulation disorder decreases the clarity of language and causes a decrease in children's learning and social ability. The demand for non-face-to-face treatment is increasing owing to the limited number of therapists and geographical or economic constraints. Non-face-to-face speech therapy programs using serious games have been proposed as an alternative. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of home therapy on logopedic and phoniatric abilities in children with articulation disorder using the Smart Speech game interface. METHODS: This study is a prosp

Speech-language disorder severity, academic success, and socioemotional functioning among multilingual and English children in the United States: The National Survey of Children's Health.

Research points to negative associations between educational success, socioemotional functioning, and the severity of symptoms in some speech-language disorders (SLDs). Nonetheless, the majority of studies examining SLDs in children have focused on monolinguals. More research is needed to determine whether the scant findings among multilinguals are robust. The present study used parent report data from the U.S. National Survey of Children's Health (2018 to 2020) to gain a better understanding of the impacts of SLD severity on indicators of academic success and socioemotional functioning among

Spelling Proficiency of Children with a Resolved Phonological Speech Sound Disorder Treated with an Integrated Approach-A Long-Term Follow-Up Randomized Controlled Trial.

Phonological developmental speech sound disorders (pDSSD) in childhood are often associated with later difficulties in literacy acquisition. The present study is a follow-up of the randomized controlled trial (RCT) on the effectiveness of PhonoSens, a treatment for pDSSD that focuses on improving auditory self-monitoring skills and categorial perception of phoneme contrasts, which could have a positive impact on later spelling development. Our study examines the spelling abilities of 26 German-speaking children (15 girls, 11 boys; mean age 10.1 years, range 9.3-11.2 years) 3-6 years after thei

17q23.2q23.3 de novo duplication in association with speech and language disorder, learning difficulties, incoordination, motor skill impairment, and behavioral disturbances: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chromosomal rearrangements involving 17q23 have been described rarely. Deletions at 17q23.1q23.2 have been reported in individuals with developmental delay and growth retardation, whereas duplications at 17q23.1q23.2 appear to segregate with clubfoot. Dosage alterations in the TBX2 and TBX4 genes, located in 17q23.2, have been proposed to be responsible for the phenotypes observed in individuals with 17q23.1q23.2 deletions and duplications. In this report, we present the clinical phenotype of a child with a previously unreported de novo duplication at 17q23.2q23.3 located distal to

A 5.6-Mb deletion in 15q14 in a boy with speech and language disorder, cleft palate, epilepsy, a ventricular septal defect, mental retardation and developmental delay.

We report a male patient with speech and language disorder, cleft palate, epilepsy, a ventricular septal defect, mental retardation and developmental delay. Characteristic facial features include low-set ears, a beak-like nose, a prominent nasal bridge, a long philtrum, a narrow forehead, a long face, a pointed chin and dental position abnormalities. Array-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) analysis demonstrated the presence of a 5.6-Mb deletion in 15q14 (chromosome 15: 3,18,33,000-3,74,77,000bp). The present case provides the evidence that 15q14 deletion outside the region encompassing t

Evidence for an X-linked modifier gene affecting the expression of Tourette syndrome and its relevance to the increased frequency of speech, cognitive, and behavioral disorders in males.

A number of disorders affecting speech, learning, and behavior have a 3:1 or greater male:female ratio. This has usually been explained on the basis of a developmental model postulating a difference in the young male versus female brain. Tourette syndrome is a hereditary neurobehavioral disorder due to a single major autosomal gene. It is associated with learning disorders and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity and shows a similar predilection for males. Because of the more obvious nature of the tics and vocal noises, it is uniquely suited for examining an alternative hypothesis of

Children's Rights to the Best Possible Care: Establishing Processes for Data Collection in Routine Care to Address Questions of Intervention Effectiveness for Children With Speech Sound Disorder.

PURPOSE: The United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC) recognizes that all children have a right to the best possible care, CRC Article 24 (health, water, food, environment). For children with speech sound disorder, this is vital in order to protect their rights to CRC Article 13 (sharing thoughts freely), CRC Article 19 (protection from violence), and CRC Article 28 (access to education). Determining what constitutes best possible care for this population is challenging because much evidence for intervention takes place outside of routine care. This review article provides an

Phenotypic and Genetic Insights Into CNOT3-Related Intellectual Developmental Disorder of Speech Delay, Autism, and Dysmorphic Faces (IDDSADF) From the First Two Japanese Cases.

Intellectual Developmental Disorder with Speech Delay, Autism, and Dysmorphic Faces (IDDSADF) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous variants in CNOT3. Although several cohorts have been documented worldwide, no Japanese patients have been reported to date. Here, we present the first two Japanese cases of IDDSADF, an 8-year-old girl and a 19-year-old boy, both presenting with developmental delay, characteristic facial features, and short stature. Both individuals exhibited a thin, tented upper lip, a morphology that has been rarely reported in other cohorts and may repres

S-Ketamine-Induced NMDA Receptor Blockade during Natural Speech Production and Its Implications for Formal Thought Disorder in Schizophrenia: A Pharmaco-fMRI Study.

Structural and functional changes in the lateral temporal language areas have been related to formal thought disorder (FTD) in schizophrenia. Continuous, natural speech production activates the right lateral temporal lobe in schizophrenia, as opposed to the left in healthy subjects. Positive and negative FTD can be elicited in healthy subjects by glutamatergic NMDA blockade with ketamine. It is unclear whether the glutamate system is related to the reversed hemispheric lateralization during speaking in patients. In a double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study, 15 healthy, male, right-ha
