This paper presents the first bioarchaeological evidence of probable scurvy in Southeast Asia from a six-year-old child at the historic-era site of Phnom Khnang Peung (15-17th centuries A.D.) in the Cardamom Mountains, Cambodia. Examination of skeletal material shows evidence consistent with scurvy - specifically, abnormal porosity on the greater wings of the sphenoid bone and hard palate, and vascular impressions on the ectocranial surface of the frontal bone and maxillary alveolar bone. In addition, this individual has evidence of cribra orbitalia indicative of anemia. Although a nutritional…

Neuroendocrine tumors of the nasal cavity are rare in both animals and humans. This report describes the macroscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a neuroendocrine tumor in a three-year-old female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) that was shot due to a facial deformity caused by an oval, firm, exophytic lesion effacing the left frontal and parietal regions. Longitudinal sectioning of the skull revealed a nasal cavity tumor that had invaded the cribriform plate, the rostral bones of the skull, the rostral aspect of the cranial cavity and the frontal sinuses and ext

Cerebral Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are presumed congenital anomalies of the blood vessels, which can increase intracranial pressure by uncertain mechanisms. We report the rare case of a 55-year-old male patient who complained about CSF rhinorrhea. Persisting CSF leakage prompted CT, which evidenced a bone defect in the right middle cranial fossa with protruding brain tissue. The diagnosis of a sphenoidal meningoencephalocele was made. Neuroimaging evidenced an AVM Spetzler Martin V. The lesion was targeted via an endonasal approach with resection of the herniated brain tissue and clos

To date there has been a lack of palaeopathological evidence for the presence of scurvy in ancient Egypt. In this paper we describe one of, if not the first, differentially diagnosed bioarchaeological cases of subadult scurvy in the region in the skeleton of a 1-year +/- 4-month old infant recovered from the Predynastic site of Nag el-Qarmila (c. 3800-3600 BCE) in Aswan, Egypt. Bony change was observed on the left maxilla and greater wing of the sphenoid bone, left and right mandibular rami, orbits, and zygomatic bones, as well as on the humeri, radii, and femora, all of which appear to be su…

Infection in the marrow of the temporal, occipital, and sphenoid bones is an uncommon, but increasing occurrence. It is usually secondary to infections beginning in the external auditory canal and is caused almost uniformly by the gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Technetium and gallium scintigraphy help in the early detection of such infections while CT scans demonstrate dissolution of bone in well-developed cases. Headache is the predominant symptom. Dysphagia, hoarseness, and aspiration herald the inevitable march of cranial nerves. We have diagnosed and treated 17 cases of ost…

We describe diffuse microporotic lesions observed in most of the scattered skeletal remains belonging to a ≈ 6 months-old female (genetic sexing) prehispanic (antiquity ≈ 600 years BP) individual recovered from a small recess of a basaltic burial cave in the highlands (2300 m above sea level) of Tenerife. Although sphenoid wings were lacking, microporotic lesions were present in several bones, especially in the hard palate, basilar part of the occipital bone, outer aspect of the maxilla, and proximal half of the right humerus, accompanied by a subtle periosteal reaction. Although non-specific,

The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the association between clinical characteristics, computed tomography (CT) characteristics, and histologic diagnosis in 43 cats with sinonasal disease. All cats were evaluated with CT and nasopharyngeal endoscopic examination, with histologic diagnosis based on nasal biopsy. Fifteen cats were diagnosed with sinonasal neoplasia and 28 cats were diagnosed with rhinitis. Clinical characteristics determined to be significantly associated with neoplasia were unilateral ocular discharge (odds ratio [OR] 9.6) and the presence of a nasopharyngea

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the axial skeleton related to the notochord in human anencephalic fetuses in order to elucidate the pathogenesis. Fifteen second trimester fetuses were examined. The spine and the cranial base were dissected and radiographed. Comparison with normal fetuses was performed. Two patterns of abnormal ossification were seen. Anencephalic cases without cervical rachischisis (Groups I and II) differed markedly from cases with cervical rachischisis (Group III). Morphological characteristics, such as bilateral narrowing of the basilar part of the occip

Many patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction and/or myofascial pain syndrome have numerous symptoms. In cases of multiple complaints, an attempt should be made to resolve symptoms on a step-by-step basis. In this case report, a patient was treated for only one of her numerous complaints, that is, a burning sensation on her palate when she touched the right tuberosity area with her tongue or finger.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior plagiocephaly is most commonly attributed to unilateral coronal synostosis. However, isolated premature fusion of the frontosphenoidal suture (FSC) represents a rare and often misdiagnosed cause due to its overlapping clinical presentation. Accurate diagnosis is essential, as treatment strategies and prognoses differ significantly.
OBJECTIVES: To present a comprehensive literature review of FSC and to report two novel clinical cases-one managed with open fronto-orbital advancement and the other with endoscopic suturectomy.
METHODS: A systematic review of reported FSC c

High-resolution imaging, based on CT, has become the expected standard of imaging in severe sinofacial trauma. Imaging must include both bone and soft-tissue detail. Intracranial complications such as hematoma, contusion, and dural tear must be noted and followed appropriately. Early orbital assessment must be included to allow surgical decompression of hematoma or fracture reduction before irreversible changes to the visual pathway occur. Clinical assessment and initial, limited plain films offer an invaluable overview to set up priorities in resuscitation and subsequent direction for more de

The Goodale-Montgomery osteoplastic obliterative frontal sinusotomy has been the ultimate resource in America for the most difficult and intractable cases of frontal sinusitis. This operation respects the integrity of the frontal floor and is based upon a concept with which the author disagrees: that the frontal sinus may be treated as an entity quite separate form the ethmoid. Macbeth, who does not obliterate, avails himself of the excellent transfrontal approach to the ethmosphenoids, but breaches the frontal floor in so doing. American surgeons have not followed his lead. The pros and cons

After a brief survey of the forms of cranial meningoencephaloceles, the current opinions on their development, symptoms and surgical therapy, a report is given on the case of a five-year-old boy suffering from a sphenoethmoidal meningocele of the size 3 x 3 x 4 cm. There was at the same time a wide median palate cleft, obviously a consequence of the meningoencephalocele. A further finding presented by the boy was a neuroradiologically diagnosed agenesis of the Corpus callosum and a median cheiloschisis. This suggests a central development disturbance as a primary cause. The attempt to perform

OBJECTIVE: External reference points, particularly Kirschner pins (K-wire), placed in the region of the nasion have been shown to improve the accuracy of maxillary vertical repositioning. Although no complications associated with this technique have been reported, there is a potential for injury to the anterior cranial fossa or frontal sinus. The purpose of this study was to measure the shortest distance from the nasion to the anterior cranial fossa and from the nasion to the frontal sinus. These measurements were used to establish anatomic guidelines governing safe placement of external refer

Recent investigations of human skeletal material from the historic St. Martin's cemetery, England, found a range of abnormal lesions in six infants that are almost certainly related to scurvy. Porous and proliferative bone lesions affecting the cranial bones and scapulae were found, and this paper presents images obtained using both macroscopic and scanning electron microscope examination of the lesions. Previous work on infantile scurvy (Ortner et al., 1997-2001) relied heavily on changes at the sphenoid, which is often missing in archaeological bone, so the identification of changes attribut

Brown tumors are rare focal giant-cell lesions resulting from the direct effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on bone tissue in hyperparathyroidism. Brown tumors most commonly affect long bones, pelvis, and ribs, whereas craniofacial involvement is uncommon, with pterygopalatine fossa involvement being exceedingly rare. This report presents a case of a 13-year-old girl with a rapidly progressing lesion in the pterygopalatine fossa, with involvement of the sphenoid and maxilla. The patient exhibited significant facial pain and V2 paresthesia, with imaging studies suggesting differential diagnos
