Sporotrichosis in Manipur: report of two cases.

Two cases of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis are reported from Imphal. Sporothrix schenekii was isolated from pus from the lesion and identity was confirmed by mycelial to yeast conversion at 37 degrees C and mice pathogenicity test. One patient gave history of injury with bone of fermented fish (Ngari). Both the patients were treated successfully with oral administration of potassium iodide. These two cases are the first authentic cases of sporotrichosis from Manipur.

A case of disseminated sporotrichosis.

UNLABELLED: Sporothrix schenckii is a thermally dimorphic fungus found in soil and in plant matter. Cutaneous sporotrichosis is the most common manifestation and disseminated sporotrichosis is the rarest. Delayed diagnoses are not uncommon. We report a case of disseminated sporotrichosis involving the skin, bones and joints, with subsequent joint destruction, tissue loss and permanent disability. CONTRIBUTION: This case report highlights the debilitating potential of sporotrichosis and its often elusive nature regarding diagnosis.

An atypical cause of sporotrichosis in a cat.

A nine-year-old domestic cat from Melbourne, Australia, presented with a non-ulcerated nodule on its nasal bridge. A fungal infection of the subcutis was diagnosed based on histopathology and culture of a white mould, which was identified as Sporothrix pallida complex by ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and β-tubulin gene sequencing. The cat was treated by cytoreduction, itraconazole and subsequently posaconazole, which eventually resulted in regression of residual infected tissues and clinical resolution.

A case of atypical sporotrichosis with multifocal cutaneous ulcers.

We report an atypical case of sporotrichosis in an elderly woman working as a horticulturist, who presented with multiple ulcers and nodules on the face and the right upper back. Histological examination found numerous small yeast-like spores in the granulomatous reaction in the upper dermis. Culture and DNA analysis identified Sporothrix schenckii, group B. Misuse of topical steroids and self-inoculation may have caused the atypical features found in this patient.

Cutaneous sporotrichosis.

Gardeners, florists, lawn laborers and agricultural workers are routinely exposed to Sporothrix schenckii, as are those working in building supplies and nurseries. The primary lesion is an ulcer or a chancre, which is followed by the development of a lymphangitic cord with nodules along its course. Biopsy is not necessary and can worsen the infection. The culture technique is simple and provides definitive diagnosis. Systemic potassium iodide therapy rarely fails. Disseminated disease is rare except in immunosuppressed patients.

Osteoarticular sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent patient.

Sporotrichosis is a frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Madagascar. Extracutaenous forms are exceptional and are usually seen in immunosuppressed hosts. We report a case of an aggressive clinical evolution of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis with osteoarticular involvement in an immunocompetent patient. Therapy with oral itraconazole 200 mg twice daily for 12 months improved the lesion. Early diagnosis of Sporothrix schenkii infection is critical to prevent complications including osteoarticular involvement, disseminated forms and death.

An unsuspected and unusual case of zoonotic sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by a thermally dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii which is commonly reported in the tropics and subtropics. Infection usually occurs as a consequence of traumatic inoculation into the skin. A previously healthy 33-year-old Malay woman presented with a scratch wound over the lateral aspect of her left thigh for 2 months after being scratched by her pet cat. Inspection of the wound revealed a granulomatous plaque measuring 3cm x 2cm with hyperkeratotic scales, fissures and multiple blackish pigments. There was a tender, palpable left inguinal lymph node …

Primary conjunctival sporotrichosis in three cats from Northeastern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Classically, sporotrichosis occurs as a chronic granulomatous lymphocutaneous infection. The extracutaneous form is uncommon a … hils, conjunctival epithelial cells, and an abundant number of round and oval cells compatible with Sporothrix spp. Microbiological culture was performed and confirmed the presence of fungi from the Sporothrix schenckii complex. All animals were treated with oral itraconazole; two animals received topical itraconazole in association with oral treatment. Case …

Comparison of the Sensitivity of Three Methods for the Early Diagnosis of Sporotrichosis in Cats.

Sporotrichosis is caused by species of fungi within the Sporothrix schenckii complex that infect man and animals. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an epidemic has been observed since 1998, with most of the cases being related to transmission from infected cats. Although the definitive diagnosis of feline sporotrichosis is made by fungal culture, cytopathological and histopathological examinations are used routinely, because the long culture period may delay treatment onset. However, alternative methods are desirable in cases of low fungal burden. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has been described as a se…

DNA typing of isolates associated with the 1988 sporotrichosis epidemic.

DNA typing techniques were used to examine selected clinical and environmental isolates of Sporothorix spp. recovered from the 1988 sporotrichosis epidemic in multiple states of the United States. Previous studies indicated that isolates in one of the six morphologically or physiologically distinct groups (group I) obtained from environmental sources were Sporothrix schenckii and were the possible etiologic agents responsible for the epidemic. To assess this hypothesis at the genetic level, whole-cell DNA was extracted from selected clinical isolates and representative members of each of the s…

Sporotrichosis caused by Sporotrix globosa in an elderly male farmer at the site of a cat scratch.

We report a case of sporotrichosis in an elderly male farmer at the site of a cat scratch scar. An 84-year-old Japanese farmer was scratched by his cat two months before his visit to our hospital. A skin biopsy was performed. Tissue culture revealed the presence of Sporothrix globosa. The patient was treated with oral itraconazole 200 mg/day for 13 months due to a slow healing ulceration, and the symptoms resolved. (71 words).

[Auricular sporotrichosis. Atypical case report simulating bacterial cellulitis].

Sporotrichosis is the most common subcutaneous or implantation mycosis in Mexico. The case of a preauricular cutaneous-fixed sporotrichosis simulating atypical bacterial cellulitis is reported in an elderly patient with no history of trauma. The biopsy showed a suppurative granuloma with scarce yeast. Sporothrix schenckii was identified in the culture and confirmed by molecular biology. She was treated with itraconazole and a clinical and mycological cure was obtained. The case of atypical presentation is presented, coming from a semi-arid zone with extreme weather.

Cutaneous disseminated sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent farmer.

Sporotrichosis is an implantation mycosis due to the genus Sporothrix. Cutaneous disseminated sporotrichosis is an unusual clinical form that often affects immunocompromised patients. We report a case of cutaneous disseminated sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent famer from a rural region of Madagascar, treated successfully with Itraconazole 200mg twice a day. This case highlights the role of multiple inoculation affecting different parts of the body as a risk factor of cutaneous disseminated sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent individually.

Sporotrichosis in a liver transplant patient: A case report and literature review.

The liver transplant patient was admitted to the hospital with hyperemic, granulomatous, ulcerated lesion in the anterior compartment of the right lower limb with report of local trauma. The agent Sporothrix schenckii was isolated from biopsy of the lesion and lymph nodes of the right lower limb. In this case, the treatment was difficult because the patient has severe pulmonary hypertension and took the following drugs: warfarin, sildenafil, and tacrolimus. These medicines interact with the antifungal, which made it difficult.

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis.

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis presented in a 10 year old child 1-2 weeks after an abrasion. A series of nodules, two of which ulcerated, appeared along the arm with tender unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy in the absence of systemic symptoms. Biopsy showed a granulomatous infiltrate but failed to reveal the organism; however, culture was positive for Sporothrix schenckii. The primary lesion healed with a scar after 3 months of systemic therapy with potassium iodide.

Case Report: Ocular Sporotrichosis-A Seven-Case Series.

Ocular infections associated with sporotrichosis can present four clinical manifestations: granulomatous conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, and bulbar conjunctivitis. The incidence of ocular sporotrichosis related to zoonotic transmission has significantly increased in endemic regions and is a frequently misdiagnosed cause of granulomatous conjuntivitis. Therefore, we present a series of seven cases of eye injury by Sporothrix strains, including clinical forms, therapeutic approaches, and laboratory procedures to alert health professionals who provide care to the…
