Gender-specific hip strength disparities correlate with injury patterns in NCAA men's and women's soccer players.

BACKGROUND: In National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer athletes, men have higher rates of hip and groin strains, whereas women have higher rates of knee ligament injuries. Strength imbalances of the hip and thigh, specifically in agonist-antagonist muscles, are known risk factors for these injuries. OBJECTIVE: To perform hip and thigh strength assessments in NCAA soccer players to evaluate for differences between genders and correlations with gender-specific injury patterns. DESIGN: With a handheld dynamometer, weight-normalized isometric strength of six muscle groups (hip abd

Fascicle Behavior and Muscle Activity of The Biceps Femoris Long Head during Running at Increasing Speeds.

Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) are prevalent in sports involving high-speed running and most of the HSIs are biceps femoris long head (BFlh) injuries. The primary cause for HSIs during high-speed running remains controversial due to the lack of in vivo measurement of the BFlh muscle behavior during running. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) and fascicle behavior of BFlh during running. Seven college male sprinters (22.14 ± 1.8 years; 177.7 ± 2.5 cm; 70.57 ± 5.1 kg; personal bests in 100m: 11.1 ± 0.2 s) were tested on a motorized treadmill instr

Application of Deep Learning Techniques for Detection of Pneumothorax in Chest Radiographs.

With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and even more so recently in the field of Machine Learning (ML), there has been rapid progress across the field. One of the prominent examples is image recognition in the medical category, such as X-ray imaging, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It has the potential to alleviate a doctor's heavy workload of sifting through large quantities of images. Due to the rising attention to lung-related diseases, such as pneumothorax and nodules, ML is being incorporated into the field in the hope of alleviating the already st

Chronic changes in muscle architecture and aponeurosis structure following calf muscle strain injuries.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strain injuries in the human calf muscles are frequent sports injuries with high recurrence. Potential structural and functional changes in the medial head of the musculus gastrocnemius (GM) and the associated aponeurosis are not well documented. PURPOSE: To test whether a GM muscle strain injury affects muscle fascicle length, pennation angle, and the morphology of the deep aponeurosis at rest and during muscle contraction long time after the injury. Additionally, electromyography (EMG) of the GM and the soleus muscle during a unilateral heel rise was measured in the injur

Acromioclavicular Joint Injury and Repair.

The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is commonly injured in athletes participating in contact and overhead throwing sports. Injuries range from simple sprains to complete ligamentous disruption, and they are classified by the established Rockwood grading system. High-grade injuries are associated with fractures around the AC joint and disruption of the superior shoulder suspensory complex, a ring of osseous and ligamentous structures at the superior aspect of the shoulder. Radiographs are the mainstay of imaging of the AC joint, with magnetic resonance imaging reserved for high-grade injuries to a

[Six pitfalls around the ankle sprains].

Ankle sprains are frequently encountered. They result most of the time in lesions of the lateral ligament complex. Nevertheless, in the context of an ankle sprains, more severe injuries including fracture of the lateral process of the talus, fracture of the base of the 5th metatarsal, tear of the medial ligament complex, lesion of the syndesmosis, sprain of the Chopart joint, and peroneal tendons luxation are potentially overlooked and, if treated inadequately, may be associated with poor functional outcome. The goal of the present paper is to make the emergency practitioner aware of these pot

Injury and Illness in World Taekwondo Junior Athletes: An Epidemiological Study.

Taekwondo has been reported to be one of the most injurious sports in the summer Olympics, however, there is a dearth of data about injury profiles for junior athletes. Therefore, we aimed to identify the incidence and profiles of the injuries and illnesses that occurred during the 2018 World Taekwondo Junior Championships and recorded using an online system. Among the 889 athletes, 67 injuries and four illnesses were reported, corresponding to an overall clinical incidence of 7.5 injuries (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.7-9.3) and 0.5 illnesses (0.1-0.9) per 100 athletes. The most frequent i

Recent and chronic sprains of the First Metacarpo-Phalangeal Joint.

Sprains of the first metacarpo-phalangeal joint (MCPJ) are a common form of hand injury that mainly affects the ulnar collateral ligament. Although the diagnosis is made on the physical findings, radiographs must be obtained and ultrasonography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary in some cases. If the joint is unstable or a bony fragment is displaced, surgery must be performed within 4 weeks after the injury. Beyond this interval, ligament reconstruction is the preferred treatment. The objective of this article is to provide evidence, from both older and recent studies, that guide

Multisegment Foot Models and Clinical Application After Foot and Ankle Trauma: A Review.

Since the end of the 1990s, several multisegment foot models (MSFMs) have been developed. Several models were used to describe foot and ankle kinematics in patients with foot and ankle pathologies; however, the diagnostic value for clinical practice of these models is not known. This review searched in the literature for studies describing kinematics in patients after foot and ankle trauma using an MSFM. The diagnostic value of the MSFMs in patients after foot and ankle trauma was also investigated. A search was performed on the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library. To invest

Multipoint-Detection Strain Sensor with a Single Electrode Using Optical Ultrasound Generated by Carbon Nanotubes.

With the development of wearable devices, strain sensors have attracted large interest for the detection of human motion, movement, and breathing. Various strain sensors consisting of stretchable conductive materials have been investigated based on resistance and capacitance differences according to the strain. However, this method requires multiple electrodes for multipoint detection. We propose a strain sensor capable of multipoint detection with a single electrode, based on the ultrasound pulse-echo method. It consists of several transmitters of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and a single polyviny

Clinical assessment of acute lateral ankle sprain injuries (ROAST): 2019 consensus statement and recommendations of the International Ankle Consortium.

Lateral ankle sprain injury is the most common musculoskeletal injury incurred by individuals who participate in sports and recreational physical activities. Following initial injury, a high proportion of individuals develop long-term injury-associated symptoms and chronic ankle instability. The development of chronic ankle instability is consequent on the interaction of mechanical and sensorimotor insufficiencies/impairments that manifest following acute lateral ankle sprain injury. To reduce the propensity for developing chronic ankle instability, clinical assessments should evaluate whether
