Implementation and evaluation of a technical support center for the Research to Enhance the Adaptation and Implementation of Health Systems Guidelines in LMICs [RAISE] initiative.

BACKGROUND: Capacity-strengthening initiatives for health policy and systems research (HPSR) in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) are often designed with little consideration of LMIC stakeholder needs. We formed a Technical Support Centre to support research teams through the WHO Alliance for HPSR's Research to Enhance the Adaptation and Implementation of Health Systems Guidelines (RAISE) initiative. We describe the implementation and evaluation of the support program. METHODS: The support program was rooted in an integrated knowledge translation approach, whereby RAISE teams informed

Meta-core outcome set for randomized trials and clinical practice for curative surgical oncology: patient and healthcare consensus statement.

BACKGROUND: The development and use of core outcome sets (COSs) have the potential to inform best practice in healthcare treatment options by facilitating data synthesis across studies. In surgical oncology, eight cancer-specific COSs exist, and these overlap in content. The development of a meta-COS that includes the core outcomes from existing cancer data sets would be applicable, as a minimum, across all cancer types in surgical oncology for use in effectiveness trials and clinical practice. METHODS: The process of developing a meta-COS included identification of the existing COS and their

Experiences With Kidney Transplant Among Undocumented Immigrants in Illinois: A Qualitative Study.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Noncitizen, undocumented patients with kidney failure have few treatment options in many states, although Illinois allows for patients to receive a transplant regardless of citizenship status. Little information exists about the experiences of noncitizen patients pursuing kidney transplantation. We sought to understand how access to kidney transplantation affects patients, their family, health care providers, and the health care system. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative study with virtually conducted semistructured interviews. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Participants were transp

Exploring a community's understanding of HIV vaccine‑induced seropositivity in a South African research setting.

BACKGROUND: The high HIV prevalence and incidence in South Africa makes it suitable for recruitment of participants for large-scale HIV preventive vaccine trials. However, fear of vaccine-induced seropositivity (VISP) may be a barrier for community acceptability of the trial, for volunteers to participate in HIV preventive vaccine trials and for uptake of an efficacious vaccine. Prior to 2015, when the first phase 1 safety HIV vaccine trial was undertaken at Setshaba Research Centre, Soshanguve, the local community stakeholders and healthcare workers were naive about HIV vaccine research and H

Prioritization of research engaged with rare disease stakeholders: a systematic review and thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although rare diseases (RD) are increasingly becoming a priority for healthcare activities and services around the world, developing research policy for investigating RD in public settings proves challenging due to the limited nature of existing evidence. Rare conditions require the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders in order to promote general awareness and garner political support. Consequently, it is critically important to identify trends in the various types of research focusing on rare disease stakeholders, including the specific topics or issues to be included in su

LGBT communities and substance use in Queensland, Australia: Perceptions of young people and community stakeholders.

Sexual minority young people use licit and illicit substances at disproportionate levels. However, little is known about the perceptions of substance use among members of LGBT communities. This paper reports the results of a content analysis of 45 semi-structured interviews about substance use in LGBT communities with sexual minority young people (n = 31) and community stakeholders (n = 14). Results indicated both sexual minority youth and community stakeholders perceived the use and acceptance of substances to be higher in LGBT communities compared to the general population. Participants iden

Deep brain stimulation clinical trials: a framework to accelerate recruitment, retention, and technology translation.

Clinical trials involving deep brain stimulation (DBS) are challenging to implement due to invasiveness and complexity of the therapy, substantial barriers to participant recruitment and retention, and difficulties translating emerging technologies into routine clinical practice. The 2023 Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Workshop on Patient Recruitment in DBS Clinical Trials convened experts in clinical care, research, engineering, neuroethics, and device regulation to discuss barriers and facilitators related to recruitment, retention, and clinical transl

Exploring stakeholder support for student-run free clinics to address gaps in non-communicable disease care in Ghana: An exploratory sequential mixed-methods study.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension and diabetes, are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Ghana, where underserved communities face persistent barriers to screening, early management, and self-care education. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) may help address these gaps, but their feasibility in sub-Saharan Africa remains underexplored. We used an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to examine stakeholder perspectives on and support for SRFCs as a model for expanding NCD care in Ghana. Qualitative data were collected through six focus group discussions with

Barriers to prevention in oral health care for english NHS dental patients: a qualitative study of views from key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in the control of oral diseases since the discovery of fluoride in the 1940s, dental caries and periodontal diseases continue to affect a significant proportion of the population, particularly socially disadvantaged and lower socioeconomic groups. The National Health Service in England provides preventive advice and treatments as part of an oral health assessment, and evidence-based guidance recommends the use of fissure sealants and topical fluorides in addition to dietary and oral hygiene advice. Although oral health promotion and education have becom

Understanding Key Stakeholders' Perspectives Towards Artificial Intelligence in Home Care Work.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are increasingly relying on home health aides and attendants (HHAs) to support their care needs and enable them to age in place. In response to workforce shortages and rising care demands, AI systems are often touted as potential solutions. However, little is known about how stakeholders responsible for implementing these systems perceive AI's potential benefits and risks. OBJECTIVE: To examine the perspectives of HHAs and other key stakeholders on deployment of AI technologies in home care work. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: A qualitative study was conducted with English

Business and Service Provider Attitudes Towards Police Involvement in Overdose Response: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Rhode Island Overdose Hotspots.

Police presence at overdose scenes can deter life-saving help-seeking behaviors due to fear of legal consequences, leading some jurisdictions to consider police non-attendance policies. However, business stakeholders' attitudes toward the role of law enforcement in overdose response remain understudied. We surveyed 100 business employees and service providers in areas of high overdose concentration in Rhode Island from November 2022 to April 2024. Participants completed structured questionnaires assessing attitudes toward police effectiveness in overdose prevention, service linkage, and public

From inequity to action: Co-producing equitable access to specialist epilepsy care for adults - findings and approach from the PROPEL project (UK).

BACKGROUND: Ensuring equitable access to specialist epilepsy care is a challenge globally. How inequities arise in high-income settings - and how they might be reduced without major new resources - remains poorly understood. PROPEL examined how inequities in ongoing adult epilepsy care emerged within an exemplar English epilepsy service and co-produced feasible service improvements. In doing so, PROPEL also provides a transferable framework for epilepsy service redesign. METHODS: An 18-month, multi-stage mixed-methods study. Six knowledge-exchange focus groups involving clinicians, administra

Multi-country collaborative citizen science projects to co-design cardiovascular disease prevention strategies and advocacy: findings from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were responsible for 20.5 million annual deaths globally in 2021, with a disproportionally high burden in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is growing evidence of the use of citizen science and co-design approaches in developing interventions in different fields, but less so in the context of CVD prevention interventions in SSA. This paper reports on the collaborative multi-country project that employed citizen science and a co-design approach to (i) explore CVD risk perceptions, (ii) develop tailored prevention strategies, and (iii) support advocacy in

"No carrot, no stick": Exploring premise identification programs across Canada.

Premises Identification (PID) programs in Canada assign unique identification numbers to locations where animals, such as livestock and poultry, are kept. These programs are provincial and territorial, with a purpose of supporting various animal disease outbreaks, natural disaster emergencies, and animal traceability. While most PID programs have been operating since early 2000s, there has been no study reporting on PID programs in Canada. This qualitative study explored PID programs across Canada through the perspectives of government-employed stakeholders to (1) describe PID programs in part

Coordinating physiotherapy care for persons with haemophilia.

INTRODUCTION: Physiotherapy is highly recommended for persons with haemophilia (PWH), to regain functioning after bleeding and to maintain functioning when dealing with haemophilic arthropathy. However, many PWH live too far from their Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre (HCCC) to receive regular treatment at their HCCC. Physiotherapists in primary care may have limited experience with a rare disease like haemophilia. AIM: To explore experiences of stakeholders with primary care physiotherapy for PWH and develop recommendations to optimize physiotherapy care coordination. METHODS: A RAND a
