Plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was measured by radioimmunoassay in 45 dogs with acute gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Significant increases (P less than 0.05) were found in dogs with acute GDV and in the fasted state after surgical treatment and recovery. The data suggested that dogs that have had GDV may have preexisting high plasma gastrin immunoreactivity. In dogs with acute GDV, plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was not found to be helpful in formulating prognosis. Circumcostal gastropexy did not affect plasma gastrin immunoreactivity.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital hiatal hernia is a rare pathology, presenting at 28 months of age on average. Paraesophageal/mixed hernias cause recurrent respiratory infections, vomiting, anemia, and growth failure.
CLINICAL CASE: Four-month-old infant, with irritability since birth and partial feeding intolerance in the last 24 hours. A partial intrathoracic stomach was evidenced in the esophago-gastro-duodenal contrast study. A thoraco-abdominal CT scan was carried out, with giant mixed hiatal hernia, right posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia, and congenital short esophagus being considered as po

A 42-year-old Caucasian woman presented to the emergency department with severe upper abdominal pain and vomiting. Clinically, she was septic, and abdominal examination suggested peritonitis. Following immediate resuscitation, the patient was stabilised and underwent urgent contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen and pelvis. This revealed a mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus with traction on the mesentery and a small volume of free fluid. She underwent laparotomy revealing gangrenous gastric fundus perforation complicated by persistent intraoperative hypotension. This mandated a damage-control approa

Ultrasonography was used to compare adhesions induced by two different methods of gastropexy in 16 dogs. An incisional gastropexy technique was used in eight dogs (group 1) and a 'modified' gastropexy technique in the remaining eight (group 2). The length and thickness of the gastropexy and the peristaltic activity of the stomach were measured ultrasonographically and compared between groups. Measurements for the two groups were taken in the early postoperative interval (two to four days), intermediate postoperative interval (eight to 20 days) and late postoperative interval (57 to 79 days). Bochdalek hernia (BH) is a rare paediatric condition, but late diagnoses occur in adults. It occurs following incomplete posterolateral development of the diaphragm. Adult BH is asymptomatic in most cases, but it has the potential of being life-threatening. This case report is of a 35-year-old female patient who presented to us with a history of childhood abdominal discomfort leading to frequent hospitalisation. Presently, she came with complaints of increasing abdominal pain, postprandial vomiting, and a 31% weight loss over 3 months before the current admission to our facility. A preoperativ

INTRODUCTION: This case report presents a rare occurrence of Type III Congenital Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia (CPEHH) with Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (IHPS) in a 28-day-old neonate. However, this unusual combination poses significant diagnostic and surgical challenges.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 28-day-old male presented with respiratory distress and persistent vomiting. Imaging revealed CPEHH in the stomach and gastroesophageal junction in the thoracic cavity. IHPS was also identified during surgery. The patient underwent successful reduction of the hernia, pyloromyotomy, or Dor fu

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: A 5-year-old intact female domestic shorthair and a 4-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair were presented for dyspnoea and unproductive vomiting. Thoracic radiographs were suggestive of either diaphragmatic hernia or hiatal hernia. Surgical treatment consisting of reduction and repositioning of the stomach and incisional gastropexy was performed (bilateral in the first case, one-sided in the second case). The second cat died a few hours postoperatively, whereas the other cat was still alive 7 months postoperatively.
RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case series d

Feeding tubes are commonly used in neonatal intensive care units, and their abnormal position seen on radiographs may indicate underlying serious problems. We recently cared for two infants who presented with clinical deterioration. An abnormally placed feeding tube seen on the chest radiograph revealed underlying serious conditions. The first case was an infant 29 weeks of age who presented with right-sided pneumothorax after birth. By history and a right-side-displaced orogastric (OG) tube, iatrogenic esophageal perforation was diagnosed. The second case was a 16-day-old infant who presented

Congenital para-oesophageal hiatal hernia (PEHH) is a rare problem in infancy, however, it constitutes a clinical entity that mandates surgical repair once the diagnosis is made. In the paediatric age group, acquired PEHH has been described as a major complication in a number of patients who were treated surgically for gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER) by Nissen fundoplication. PEHH is a frequently encountered condition in elderly patients; it accounts for 5% of diaphragmatic hiatal hernias. In both paediatric and adult patients PEHH, whether congenital or acquired in origin, is usually associat

Between January 1970 and December 1984, 65 patients with a congenital anterior abdominal wall defect were admitted to the Pediatric Surgical Center of the St. Radbound Hospital, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. There were 39 cases of omphalocele. Ten had giant omphalocele, defined as omphalocele that could not be closed primarily. In these cases, a conservative method of treatment was used. The results are reported of these 10 cases of giant omphalocele with special emphasis on mortality, complications, and length of hospital stay. Mean hospital stay was 95 days. Local infection did not present seri

The Type IV paraesophageal hernia is the rarest and most treacherous hiatal hernia: herniated viscera compressing the chest cavity can imitate cardiopulmonary symptoms convincingly enough to derail the diagnostic workup. We describe a 57-year-old man in whom a Type IV hiatal hernia, which found incidentally 25 years earlier, had enlarged into a giant 15 × 12 cm defect with a 180-degree organoaxial gastric volvulus. He presented not with reflux but with orthopnoea, nocturnal cough, postprandial palpitations, and muffled heart sounds; only after a normal cardiac workup did computed tomography re

BACKGROUND: Malrotation of the bowel refers to any variation in the rotation and fixation of the gastrointestinal tract during the first trimester and is most commonly detected postnatally. Nonrotation of the bowel and incomplete rotation of the bowel are subtypes of malrotation.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the nonrotation subtype of malrotation of the bowel can be detected on prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases from 2012 to 2018 with nonrotation of the bowel without obstruction confirmed by imaging, surgery and/or autopsy were compared to prenatal imaging.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review the presentations of gastrointestinal duplication (GID) and to assess the influence of prenatal diagnosis on treatment.
METHODS: Retrospective review of all GID at 2 pediatric hospitals from 1980-2002 was conducted.
RESULTS: Seventy-three patients (M43:F30) were identified: 21 neonates, 28 infants (1 to 24 months), 15 children (1 to 10 years), 9 adolescents (>/=11 years). GID location by frequency was ileum (31.5%), ileocaecal valve (30.2%), duodenum (9.6%), stomach (8.2%), jejunum (8.2%), colon (6.8%), and rectum (5.5%). In neonates an

The clinical features and management of food engorgement (FE) in dogs have not been previously described. This retrospective observational study describes characteristics and outcome of 35 dogs with FE, and compares features on presentation to 36 dogs with gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV). Cases were retrospectively reviewed for history, clinical findings and outcome. Gastric distension was measured by caudal gastric margin (CGM), level with lumbar vertebrae, on a lateral abdominal radiograph. Frequent characteristics of dogs with FE included tachycardia, tachypnoea, hyperproteinaemia, incr

Inflammatory bowel disease, vascular disease, volvulus, adhesions, or abdominal trauma may necessitate extensive small-bowel resection resulting in an ultra-short distal duodenal or jejunal stump. If this distal duodenal or short jejunal stump is too short for stoma creation and bowel continuity restoration is hazardous or not possible at all, a distal duodenogastrostomy or proximal jejunogastrostomy in combination with drainage of the stomach is an option to prevent stump leakage. Although successful, this distal duodenogastrostomy has been described only in very few patients and in older rec
