OBJECTIVES: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common painful disorder affecting oral health, mucosa and overall quality of life. The etiopathogenesis of RAS remains unclear. RAS shows a large genetic diversity among the patients. In present study, we investigated whether CD40 gene rs4810485 and rs1883832 are associated with RAS and its clinical findings in Turkish patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA obtained from 387 individuals (160 patients with RAS and 227 healthy controls) were used in the study. CD40 gene rs4810485 and rs1883832 mutations were determined by using polymera…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common disorder of the oral mucosa. The symptoms can range from a minor nuisance to severe forms that can be extremely debilitating. Two cases of chronic aphthous stomatitis are described. The patients sought help to ameliorate vasomotor symptoms. A diagnosis of sympathetic nervous system hypofunction was established. Treatment was aimed at restoring normal sympathetic function by the administration of dextroamphetamine sulfate. Since the patients have been on the amphetamine salts, neither their vasomotor symptoms nor their aphthous lesions have returned. Hy…

BACKGROUND: Behçet's syndrome (BS) is a multisystem immune-related disease of unknown etiology. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by the presence of idiopathic oral ulceration without extraoral manifestation. The interplay between the oral microbial communities and the immune response could play an important role in the etiology and pathogenesis of both BS and RAS.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the salivary and oral mucosal microbial communities in BS and RAS.
METHODS: Purified microbial DNA isolated from saliva samples (54 BS, 25 healthy controls [HC], and 8 RAS) were examine…

A case report is presented in which a respiratory tract infection with M. pneumoniae appears to have provoked a generalised mucocutaneous disease, described as Stevens Johnson syndrome. The patient possessed complement-fixing antibodies to M. pneumoniae to a titre of 1/2048 compared with the general population titre of 1/32. The oral mucosal lesions are described in particular and a likely pathogenesis of erythema multiforme is discussed.

Intracerebral infection of weanling Swiss mice with a temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), ts pi364, resulted in a unique neuropathological syndrome not previously described with other VSV mutants. Mice infected with wild-type VSV died from an acute encephalitis characterized by neuronal necrosis and efficient virus replication in both brain and spinal cord. In contrast, with VSV ts pi364, the most prominent histopathological feature was destruction of the ependyma of the lateral ventricles. Virus antigen was also limited to the leptomeninges and the lateral v…

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral mucosal condition characterized by painful, recurrent ulcers that affect quality of life. Topical corticosteroids such as triamcinolone acetonide are the standard treatment due to their anti-inflammatory effects, but concerns about side effects and patient preference have prompted interest in alternative therapies. Aloe vera, known for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, has emerged as a potential natural option. However, comparative evidence with standard treatments remains limited, necessitating further evaluati…

Complete dentures (CD) are prone to biofilm formation, particularly by Candida species, which may lead to denture stomatitis (DS). As edentulism remains highly prevalent among the global ageing population, denture-related infections represent a significant public health concern. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the clinical severity of DS with the prevalence, microbial load, and antifungal susceptibility profile of Candida spp., providing new insights into the pathogenesis and therapeutic management of this condition. Biofilm from the CD and palate was seeded for prevalence and mi…

Bacterial infectious stomatitis (BIS), characterized by severe infections overlaying ulcers, poses complex therapeutic challenges and often results in prolonged healing, leading to significant patient discomfort. To address this clinical challenge, a biomimetic microneedle (MN) suction cup is designed inspired by the tarsal claw of Drosophila. The suction cup component is crafted from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel, while the MN section, embedded within the suction cup, comprises a thermoresponsive and antibacterial composite hydrogel infused with the drug S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). This i…

Lymphoplasmacytic oral mucosal inflammation (stomatitis) in canine patients is common and non-specific. Contact lesions (CL) secondary to periodontal disease are particularly common. Dogs with CL may or may not have canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CCUS), yet clinicians are often faced with making treatment decisions without a clear diagnosis. Some may expect canine patients to be treated similarly to feline chronic gingivostomatitis patients, for whom partial- to full-mouth extractions remain the primary intervention. Because this assumption may lead to inappropriate care, clear recommen…

We herein report a rare case of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome that occurred in an 18-year-old man. He visited our hospital with recurrent episodes of a fever, pharyngitis and adenitis without suggestive findings of infection. These episodes resolved within 5 days and recurred quite regularly, with an interval of about 30 days. As the febrile episodes significantly impaired his quality of life, he was treated with colchicine (0.5 mg) as prophylaxis. This completely prevented the episodes during six months of follow-up. Colchicine may the…
