INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis and treatment of posterior plagiocephaly is one of the most controversial aspects of craniofacial surgery.
PATI … f this increase with the recommendation to avoid the prone sleeping position, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, suggests a possible causal relationship. If the association is causal, education regarding the need of head position rotation coupled with that for sudden infant death syndrome should obviate positional occipital plagiocephaly.
CONCLUSION …

OBJECTIVE: To analyze risk factors in infants who die suddenly and unexpectedly in bassinets.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of all deaths of infants involving bassinets reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) between 1990 and 2004.
RESULTS: For the 53 deaths analyzed, the mean age at death was 84 days. The cause of death was recorded as anoxia, asphyxiation, or suffocation in 85% and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in 9.4%. In terms of position, 37% were placed prone for sleep, and 50% were prone when found dead. Additional items in the bassinet, including soft b…

We report a case of botulism in a 11 month-old infant. Hypotonia complicated by progressive bulbar paralysis revealed the disease. Botulism B toxin was present in serum on the 8th day of the disease. On the occasion of this case report the clinical, diagnostic, epidemiological and pathophysiologic aspects of infant botulism are reviewed. The relationship between sudden infant death and botulism is discussed.

Congenital long-QT syndrome with 2:1 atrioventricular block presenting in the perinatal period is rare, has a poor prognosis, and leads to high risk for lethal ventricular arrhythmic events. An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator seems to be the most effective treatment in the prevention of arrhythmic sudden cardiac death in patients with long-QT syndrome. Technical limitations and risks associated with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators in asymptomatic infants is considered too great to justify use for primary prophylaxis against sudden cardiac death. In this case report we describe t

Obstetricians may be a pregnant woman's primary professional source of information about her infant prior to the birth, but infant safe sleep knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of this population are unknown. This study explores obstetric physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and infant safe sleep and identifies barriers as well as enabling and/or reinforcing factors associated with providing infant safe sleep education in the prenatal environment. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with obstetric physicians who provide prenatal healthcare …

Clinical and neuropathologic studies were performed in 5 infants who had brainstem or cerebellar infarction and respiratory control abnormalities during early infancy. The anatomic distribution of brainstem infarction was closely related to the failure of neural respiratory control as was unilateral cerebral hemorrhagic infarction to sudden death. Brainstem and cerebellar lesions may be important in the pathogenetic mechanism of sleep apnea and sudden infant death syndrome due to brainstem tegmental gliosis and cerebellar respiratory control disturbance.

One continuing concern in the sociological and psychological literature has been with the mental health consequences of stressful life events. Occasionally such stressful events have been linked to other outcomes such as a deterioration in the extent or quality of the relationship between a cohabiting (usually married) couple. This paper takes data from a longitudinal study of parents of an infant who has died (due to a Stillbirth, Neonatal Death or Sudden Infant Death), to determine whether the relationship between the parents is adversely affected. The follow-up data is available 2 months an…

The principle causes of infant death are natural causes [including the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)]. Natural deaths in infants are principally due to infections, cardiovascular anomalies and other metabolic or genetic disorders. Gastrointestinal pathology including anomalies may also cause death in this age group. This case describes a 6 month old boy who had undergone repair of a diaphragmatic hernia when aged 2 days, but who subsequently died as a result of a mesenteric abnormality with torsion of the gut and a large fibrous walled bowel containing hernial sac in the left pleural cav…

We report the case of an infant with an episode of loss of consciousness, in whom ventricular fibrillation was diagnosed. He was successfully defibrillated and long QT syndrome was diagnosed as his baseline disease. This case constitutes a documented example of this entity as a cause of the sudden infant death syndrome.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) has recorded a significant increase of accidental asphyxia deaths in infancy associated with … sphyxia due to overlay while cosleeping could not be ruled out. Only 21 cases were determined to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is consistent with the continuous decline of SIDS death in Maryland since 1994. The age of asphyxiated cosleeping infants ranged from 15 days to 9 months. Nine out of the 10 asphyxia deaths were black infants. The most common …

A 12-mm spherical thyroglossal duct cyst at the base of the tongue caused the death of a four-week-old infant by obstructing the glottis. Previous case reports of this rare entity indicate that the supine position aggravates airway obstruction. Proof of a cause and effect relationship between such a cyst and death is difficult in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) age group because of nonspecific findings associated with asphyxia and SIDS. Autopsy should include a thorough examination of the oral cavity to detect such lesions.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a malformation syndrome characterized by cardiovascular disease (supravalvular aortic stenosis, peripheral pulmonary stenosis), facial dysmorphism and growth/developmental delay, and now is known to be caused by deletion of elastin gene and other contiguous genes at chromosome 7. Sudden death has been reported in more than 25 patients with WS so far. Bird, et al (1996) reported 10 sudden death cases, 6 of which were associated with cardiac catheterization. Wessel, et al (2004) estimated the incidence of sudden death to be around 1/1000 patient years. Clinical and path

The forensic investigation of infant deaths poses complex challenges, particularly in differentiating between natural, accidental, and intentional causes. Traditional autopsy methods often lack definitive markers for asphyxia or inflicted trauma, resulting in diagnostic ambiguity-especially in cases of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), neonaticide, and infanticide. Overlapping post-mortem findings and inconsistent classification protocols across jurisdictions further hinder accurate determinations. However, recent advancements in forensic pathology-including post-mortem imaging, molecular

BACKGROUND: Infants with single-ventricle congenital heart defects are at risk of sudden unexpected death. In an effort to decrease the risk of sudden death, some centers have advocated that routine immunizations be deferred in this population. However, it is not known if an association exists between immunizations and adverse events.
METHODS: The present study examined the relationship of routine immunizations with adverse events, which were defined as sudden death or hospital readmission. The diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine was considered in the analysis. The patient p

Sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) covers both explained and unexplained deaths. Unexplained cases or SIDS are likely to have multiple neural mechanisms contributing to the final event. The evidence ranges from subtle physiological signs related to autonomic control, to findings at autopsy of altered neurotransmitter systems, including the serotonergic system, a network that has an extensive homeostatic role in cardio-respiratory and thermoregulatory control. Processes may be altered by the vulnerability of the infant due to age, poor motor ability, or a genetic predisposition. The fata

BACKGROUND: We survey the postmortem findings of cardiovascular malformations in infants under the age of 1 year who died suddenly and unexpectedly, in a way that mimicked sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and evaluate the importance of the malformation for the fatal outcome.
METHODS: Four hundred fifty-seven infants under the age of 1 year, who died between 1982 and 2001, were investigated at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden.
RESULTS: Cardiovascular malformations were found in 18 infants (3.9%). Only 6 of 18 malformations, mostly severe, were clinically diagnosed …
