[Ogilvie syndrome].

Ogilvie's syndrome is a rare condition with progressive dilatation of the proximal colon without mechanical obstruction. Untreated it can lead to coecal perforation, peritonitis and death. It develops in patients with medical or surgical complications, but can be idiopathic. Caesarean section is the most common preceding surgical procedure. An imbalance between the parasympathetic and the sympathetic innervation of the intestine is thought to be the cause. Trauma to the retroperitoneum, infections, bleeding and electrolyte disturbances, hormonal changes and medicamina are predisposing factors.

[Morphological investigation of external sphincter muscle of the male posterior urethra].

For investigation of function of the male posterior urethra, morphological study was performed in terms of the muscle architecture including sphincter muscle of the posterior urethra. The muscle localization was demonstrated by microdissection in eight male cadavers. Histological examination was also employed with HE staining and immunohistochemical method to detect the nature of these muscles. At the dorsal side, the muscle fibers of the deep trigone were located from the inter-ureteral ridge beyond the bladder neck to the vermontanum surrounding the posterior urethra. They were regarded as t

Pathophysiology involved in autonomic dysreflexia.

Autonomic dysreflexia has potentially life-threatening consequences in quadriplegics and high paraplegics. Seizures, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and fatal stroke may result. This article explains the pathophysiology of autonomic dysreflexia. Appropriate nursing interventions to prevent serious complications are described.

The spoon test: a simple bedside test for assessing sudomotor autonomic failure.

The efficacy of a new dual simple bedside test--the spoon test--in demonstrating sudomotor skin derangements was assessed. The results were compared with those defined by the quinizarine sweat test. The advantages and disadvantages of these two above and other known similar tests are discussed.

[Interaction between the renin system and parasympathetic nervous system in heart failure].

UNLABELLED: The increase of sympathetic activity in heart failure is accompanied by a reduced parasympathetic tone. The renin-angiotensin system has not only multiple interactions with the sympathetic nervous system, but may also influence vagal tone directly by angiotensin II. Animal studies show a reduction of parasympathetic tone by a direct action of angiotensin II in the area postrema where the blood brain barrier is absent. It is possible that, in addition to the sympathetic and renin-angiotensin system, the parasympathetic nervous system may also influence prognosis in heart failure. Th…

Autonomic control of blood pressure in women: The roles of hypertension and aging.

Hypertension remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide, with implications in women's health across the lifespan. Of note, autonomic nervous system imbalances have been linked to the development of hypertension and are present with natural aging and various conditions unique to women (e.g., menopause, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome). As such, this article reviews the critical changes in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems that occur in women and may contribute to the development of hypertension. Special focus is p…

Shoulder-hand syndrome after stroke. A complex regional pain syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) types I and II are neuropathic pain disorders that develop as an exaggerated response to a traumatic l … that a sub-group of CRPS patients exists in whom a predominant factor is the hyper-activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and that it responds positively to sympathetic block. Diagnosis is clinical and there are no specific tests, nor pathognomic symptoms to identify this disease with certainty. Diagnosis of CRPS after stroke appears more complex than in other patholo …

Autonomic cardiovascular control during exercise.

The cardiovascular response to exercise is largely determined by neurocirculatory control mechanisms that help to raise blood pressure and modulate vascular resistance which, in concert with regional vasodilatory mechanisms, promote blood flow to active muscle and organs. These neurocirculatory control mechanisms include a feedforward mechanism, known as central command, and three feedback mechanisms, namely, 1) the baroreflex, 2) the exercise pressor reflex, and 3) the arterial chemoreflex. The hemodynamic consequences of these control mechanisms result from their influence on the autonomic n

Modulation of renal sympathetic innervation: recent insights beyond blood pressure control.

Renal afferent and efferent sympathetic nerves are involved in the regulation of blood pressure and have a pathophysiological role in hypertension. Additionally, several conditions that frequently coexist with hypertension, such as heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, renal dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome, demonstrate enhanced sympathetic activity. Renal denervation (RDN) is an approach to reduce renal and whole body sympathetic activation. Experimental models indicate that RDN has the potential to lower blood pressure and prevent cardio-renal remodeling in chronic

Nerve-sparing schwannoma removal from two infrequent origins.

Schwannomas of nerve sheath origin (Schwann cell) are the most common neurogenic thoracic tumors and they usually originate from an intercostal nerve, especially in the paravertebral region. Tumors that originate from other nerves such as the phrenic nerve, vagus, or sympathetic nerves are uncommon. We report two cases of schwannomas in rare locations. A 62-year-old woman had a giant schwannoma arising from the right phrenic nerve, and a 57-year-old woman had one from the left sympathetic nerve. Both tumors were completely removed with preservation of the nerves.

Complex regional pain syndrome is a disease of the central nervous system.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is clinically characterized by pain, abnormal regulation of blood flow and sweating, edema of skin and subcutaneous tissues, trophic changes of skin, appendages of skin and subcutaneous tissues, and active and passive movement disorders. It is classified into type I (previously reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and type II (previously causalgia). Based on multiple evidence from clinical observations, experimentation on humans, and experimentation on animals, the hypothesis has been put forward that CRPS is primarily a disease of the central nervous system. CRP

[Characteristics of the functional state of different sections of the autonomic nervous system and their role in the pathogenesis of oligomenorrhea].

Analysis of the clinical picture of oligomenorrhea and of the results of studies of the function of various sections of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in 58 patients of a reproductive age has revealed differences in these functions, related to the time of menstrual disorders onset. Oligomenorrhea patients with menarche complained of cardiovascular, respiratory, and emotional-motivational disorders, examinations have revealed in them dysfunctional disorders and reduced reserve potentials of both ANS sections. In oligomenorrhea patients in whom the condition developed at the age of 18-25 aft
