A 38-year-old-female presented to our unit for investigation of an incidental diagnosis of right ventricular dilatation. Transthoracic colou … angiography confirmed drainage of an anomalous pulmonary vein to the IVC-atrial junction. Scimitar syndrome is a rare vascular anomaly that can manifest in childhood with signs of right heart failure and/or recurrent pneumonia. When asymptomatic, this anomaly can be accidentally discovered in adulthood and should be suspected in cases of left-to-right shu …

Achondroplasia is the most common type of short-limbed dwarfism in children resulting from fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) mutations. Activating mutations of FGFR3 also result in other forms of skeletal dysplasia and craniosynostosis. Acanthosis nigricans is associated with these skeletal dysplasias and we recently encountered a skeletal dysplasia along with acanthosis nigricans in a young boy. We report the case due its unusual nature affecting one of twin brothers.

Kounis syndrome was described in 1991 by Kounis and Zavras as the coincidental occurrence of acute coronary syndromes with allergic reactions (anaphylactic or anaphylactoid). Today, allergic angina and allergic myocardial infarction are referred to as Kounis syndrome, and the latter has been reported in association with a variety of drugs, insect stings, food, environmental exposures and medical conditions, among other factors. The incidence is not known, as most of the available information comes from case reports or small case series. In this article, the clinical aspects, diagnosis, pathoge…

Asherman's syndrome is being diagnosed with increasing frequency. Although it usually occurs following curettage of the pregnant or recently pregnant uterus, any uterine surgery can lead to intrauterine adhesions (IUA). Most women with IUA have amenorrhea or hypomenorrhea, but up to a fourth have painless menses of normal flow and duration. Those who have amenorrhea may also have cyclic pelvic pain caused by outflow obstruction. The accompanying retrograde menstruation may lead to endometriosis. In addition to abnormal menses, infertility and recurrent spontaneous abortion are common complaint…

Autoantibodies to eight of the aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases-the most well-recognized of which is anti-histidyl (Jo-1)-have all been implicated in the pathogenesis of antisynthetase syndrome (AS). AS is characterized by varying degrees of interstitial lung disease, myositis, arthropathy, fever, Raynaud's phenomenon, and mechanic's hands, and the morbidity and mortality of the disease are usually linked to the pulmonary findings. The value of a lung biopsy in AS cannot be overemphasized, as it serves to describe the underlying etiology of the interstitial lung disease, guide therapy, and e…

UNLABELLED: Gilbert syndrome is a common autosomal dominant hereditary condition with incomplete penetrance and characterized by intermittent unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in the absence of hepatocellular disease or hemolysis. In patients with Gilbert syndrome, uridine diphosphate-glucuronyl transferase activity is reduced to 30% of the normal, resulting in indirect hyperbilirubinemia. In its typical form, hyperbilirubinemia is first noticed as intermittent mild jaundice in adolescence. However, Gilbert syndrome in combination with other prevailing conditions such as breast feeding, G-6-PD d…

Mucocutaneous papillomas can be manifestations of an autosomal dominant condition known as Cowden syndrome (CS). We report the case of a 22-year-old man with oral and cutaneous papules and a past history of thyroid malignancy. It is important to recognize oral manifestations of CS; they can lead to early diagnosis of the condition.

Cowden syndrome or multiple hamartoma syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition with variable expressions that result mainly from mutation in the PTEN gene on arm 10q. It is characterized by multiple hamartomatous neoplasms of the skin, oral mucosa, gastrointestinal tract, bones, CNS, eyes, and genitourinary tract. Mucocutaneous features include trichilemmomas, oral mucosal papillomatosis, acral keratosis, and palmoplantar keratosis. Here we present a case of Cowden syndrome in a 14-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of multiple oral papillomatous lesions.

The assessment of chest pain is a routine in emergency health services. Although this is a common complaint with a broad differential diagnosis. the major concern is the possibility of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Electrocardiography and cardiac enzyme levels are important tools in the investigation of these patients; however. negative results may actually be overlooking the identification of some conditions. We report the case of a female patient with angina. whose baseline tests in the emergency room were negative for changes suggestive of ischemic heart disease. The Wellens syndrome. a re…

Kindler syndrome (MIM173650) is an autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by poikiloderma, trauma-induced skin blistering, mucosal inflammation, and photosensitivity. Loss-of-function mutations in the FERMT1 gene are the cause of Kindler syndrome. Kindler syndrome is categorized as a subtype of epidermolysis bullosa (EB). During infancy and childhood, there is clinical overlap between Kindler syndrome and dystrophic EB. Unlike other forms of EB, Kindler syndrome is characterized by impaired actin cytoskeleton-extracellular matrix interactions and a variable plane of blister formation…
