Möbius sequence in a girl and arthrogryposis in her half-brother: distinct phenotypes caused by prenatal injuries.

Möbius sequence is a congenital facial and abducens nerve palsy, frequently associated to abnormalities of extremities. Arthrogryposis multi … used crack (free-based cocaine) in the first trimester, respectively. The girl also has equinovarus talipes and autistic behavior. The boy has arthrogryposis with flexion contractures of the feet and knees. Clubfoot in children.

Clubfoot, or talipes equinovarus, is a deformity consisting of equinus, varus, and adductus foot deformity. The true etiology of congenital clubfoot is unknown; several theories have been proposed. The pathology of the individual bones contributes to the clubfoot deformity and soft tissue contractures around the ankle and talocalcaneonavicular joint maintains the deformity and involve muscles, tendons, tendon sheaths, ligaments and joint capsules. Various treatment regimens have been proposed, including the use of corrective splinting, taping, and casting. Surgery in clubfoot is indicated for …

[Clinical, radiological and arthroscopical aspects in nail patella syndrome. Literature review based on an affected family].

Nail patella syndrome (NPS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder affecting the nails, skeletal system, kidneys, and eyes. Skeletal features include absent or hypoplastic patellae, patella dislocations, elbow abnormalities, talipes and iliac horns on plain films. The existing literature focuses on clinical and radiographic findings in patients with NPS. We also report the case of a 40-year-old male patient and his family affected by NPS and includes clinical, radiographic as well as arthroscopic findings. Arthroscopic findings in this case are characterized by multiple synovial plicae i…

Invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures 2005.

Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling have been the two most common prenatal diagnostic procedures for decades. There are wide variati … d risks of limb reduction defects following CVS at 10 weeks or greater, but there is an increase in Talipes from "Early Amniocentesis." In the first trimester CVS is the safer procedure.

Camptomelic dysplasia with sex reversal.

Camptomelic dysplasia is a disorder of the newborn characterized by congenital bowing and angulation of long bones together with other skeletal and extraskeletal defects. The affected newborn had dysmorphic features with bowing of the legs and bilateral talipes equinovarus. Radiology showed marked anterior bowing of both tibia with disproportionately short fibula, anterolateral bowing of the femurs and wide pelvic outlet with small iliac wings. She had sex reversal with normal female genitalia and 46, XY karyotype. Camptomelic dysplasia is generally considered to be a lethal skeletal dysplasia…

Talectomy in patients with recurrent deformity in club foot. A long-term follow-up study.

We reviewed 24 feet in 15 patients who had undergone talectomy for recurrent equinovarus deformity; 21 were associated with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, two with myelomeningocele and one with idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus. The mean follow-up was 20 years. Good results were achieved in eight feet (33%) in which further surgery was not needed and walking was painless; a fair result was obtained in ten feet (42%) in which further surgery for recurrence of a hindfoot deformity had been necessary but walking was painless; the remaining six feet (25%) were poor, with pain on walki…

Development of the functional orthosis.

In conclusion, a functional orthosis may be used to effectively treat most, but not all, abnormalities of the lower extremity that cause abnormal function of the foot. Abnormalities that are resistant to treatment with functional orthoses are compensated talipes equinus, excessive verticality of the oblique axis of the midtarsal joint, forefoot adductus that exceeds 15 degrees of adductus, Charcot's disease, congenital shortage of the iliopsoas muscle, and certain neurologic diseases that exhibit transient muscle spasm or paralysis, resulting in abnormal forces acting upon the foot that vary w…

Congenital malformations associated with anencephaly in liveborn and stillborn infants.

Records from the population-based British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry were examined, and a total of 456 infants with anencephaly (181 liveborns, 275 stillborns) were identified. Registry records list up to four congenital malformations per individual, and the records of the study cohort were reviewed for the presence of additional malformations. A total of 12.7% of infants (14.4% liveborns, 11.6% stillborns) had congenital malformations in addition to anencephaly. The frequencies of specific congenital malformations (e.g., talipes, cleft lip and/or palate, omphalocele) in infants wit…

Forefoot Adduction, Hindfoot Varus or Pes Cavus: Risk Factors for Fifth Metatarsal Fractures and Jones Fractures? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The origin of fractures of the fifth metatarsus and Jones fracture is not clear. The goal of this study was to investigate the evidence of anatomical deformities such as metatarsus adductus, hindfoot varus, or pes cavus as risk factors for this pathology. A literature search of records related to the review question was performed screening PubMed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane library databases (last update: May 2020) according to PRISMA guidelines. A meta-analysis was performed using the mean difference of the assessed angles (in patients with the fractures vs controls) as outcome measure to su

Supramalleolar osteotomy combined with lateral ligament reconstruction and talofibular immobilization for varus ankle osteoarthritis with excessive talar tilt angle.

BACKGROUND: Although supramalleolar osteotomy is the main joint-preserving method for the treatment of varus ankle osteoarthritis, it tends to be ineffective when ankle osteoarthritis presents in combination with an excessive talar tilt angle. The purpose of this study was to present a new surgical technique, supramalleolar osteotomy combined with lateral ligament reconstruction and talofibular immobilization, for the treatment of varus ankle osteoarthritis with an excessive talus tilt angle and to evaluate the clinical and radiological results. METHODS: From January 2013 to October 2016, a t

Segmental foot and ankle kinematic differences between rectus, planus, and cavus foot types.

The presence of multiple foot types has been used to explain the variability of foot structure observed among healthy adults. These foot types were determined by specific static morphologic features and included rectus (well aligned hindfoot/forefoot), planus (low arched), and cavus (high arched) foot types. Unique biomechanical characteristics of these foot types have been identified but reported differences in segmental foot kinematics among them has been inconsistent due to differences in neutral referencing and evaluation of only select discrete variables. This study used the radiographica

[Deletion 11q23 --> qter (Jacobsen Syndrome) associated with duodenal atresia and annular pancreas].

Jacobsen syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder due to terminal 11q deletion. Prominent features are growth and psychomotor retardation, trigonocephaly and a characteristic facial dysmorphism, but many different abnormalities have been reported. We present the case of a preterm male. Prenatal ultrasonography was suspicious for duodenal atresia. At birth, the boy presented the craniofacial features typical of Jacobsen syndrome, together with diffusely spread petechiae and talipes equinovarus. Hemogram revealed pancytopenia. Ultrasound examination showed left renal agenesis and confirmed the du…
