BACKGROUND: In Denmark, the incidence of all types of skin cancer, including malignant melanoma, has been increasing since the 1960s. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main preventable cause of skin cancer. We describe current sunbed use in the Danish population.
METHODS: A population-based sample of 3437 persons aged 15-59 years completed a questionnaire that included items on artificial and natural exposure to UV. We examined relations between sunbed use, outdoor tanning, knowledge about associated health risks and demographic factors with logistic regression analysis.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive form of brain cancer with the very poor survival and high recurrence rate. Pseudoporphyria is a photosensitive bullous disease, which resembles porphyria cutanea tarda. Normal porphyrin levels in urine, stool and blood define pseudoporphyria. Pseudoporphyria is associated with chronic renal failure, haemodialysis, a variety of drugs (e.g. naproxen, nabumetone, furosemide, ciprofloxacin, voriconazole, acitretin), tanning beds and UVA exposure. Treatment consists of UV protection and cessation of suspected agents. Patients in haemodialysis can benefit from treatment with N-acetylcysteine or glutathione.

A severe case of solar urticaria induced by UVA with positive results of passive transfer test (3 recipients) and reverse passive transfer test (2 recipients) is reported. Desensitization treatment by irradiation of particular parts of the body with UVA and UVB (to accelerate tanning) was fully effective.
