Severity of childhood maltreatment predicts reaction times and heart rate variability during an emotional working memory task in borderline personality disorder.

UNLABELLED: Background: Difficulties in emotion regulation are a core symptom of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and often interfere with cognitive functions, such as working memory (WM). Traumatic childhood experiences, including severe maltreatment, can contribute to emotion dysregulation, possibly mediated by changes in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV). However, it is not yet entirely understood if HF-HRV alterations underlie impaired WM during emotional distraction in BPD and if this is related to traumatic childhood experiences and to comorbid post-traumatic stress dis

Dystonic neck muscles show a shift in relative autospectral power during isometric contractions.

OBJECTIVE: To identify effects of a deviant motor drive in the autospectral power of dystonic muscles during voluntary contraction in cervical dystonia patients. METHODS: Submaximal (20%) isometric head-neck tasks were performed with the head fixed, measuring surface EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis in CD patients and controls. Autospectral power of muscle activity, and head forces was analyzed using cumulative distribution functions (CDF). A downward shift between the theta/low alpha-band (3-10Hz) and the high alpha/beta-band (10-30Hz) was detected us

Sensitivity to the effects of sedative-hypnotics on motor performance: influence of task difficulty and chronic phenobarbital administration.

The present investigation examined sensitivity to the effects of various sedative-hypnotics on motor performance in rats treated chronically with phenobarbital. Eight rats were trained to walk on a rotorod treadmill at low (8 r.p.m.) and high (24 r.p.m.) rotational speeds. Prior to the chronic regimen, phenobarbital, pentobarbital, amobarbital, diazepam and clonazepam produced dose-dependent impairments in motor performance at both speeds. During chronic treatment with phenobarbital (100 mg/kg/day), tolerance was conferred to the effects of all the drugs examined, as evidenced by rightward shi

Internal cognitive control in clinical depression: general but no emotion-specific impairments.

Prior research has suggested that depression is characterized by impaired cognitive control. The present study sought to investigate internal cognitive control impairments related to emotional information and task settings in clinical depression (MDD, major depressive disorder). Internal cognitive control was operationalized as switching between internally held mental representations that required continuous updating in working memory and measured with the Internal Shift Task (IST). The results showed that MDD individuals were characterized by a general switching impairment. This switching imp

What bilateral damage of the superior parietal lobes tells us about visual attention disorders in developmental dyslexia.

Neuroimaging studies have identified the superior parietal lobules bilaterally as the neural substrates of reduced visual attention (VA) span in developmental dyslexia. It remains however unclear whether the VA span deficit and the deficits in temporal and spatial attention shifting also reported in dyslexic children reflect a unitary spatio-temporal deficit of attention - probably linked to general posterior parietal dysfunction- or the dysfunction of distinct attentional systems that relate to different neural substrates. We explored this issue by testing an adult patient, IG, with a specifi

Set shifting deficits in melancholic vs. non-melancholic depression: preliminary findings.

Twenty-two patients with major depressive disorder, 11 of them with melancholic features, and 11 controls were investigated with CANTAB subtests focusing in visual memory/learning and executive functions. Melancholic patients performed worse than the other groups in all tasks and manifested a significant impairment in set shifting. The results are discussed in association with prefrontal dysfunction.

Sleep deprivation reduces the rate of rapid picture processing.

Object recognition becomes impaired at faster presentation rates and here we show the neuroanatomical foci of where this might be exacerbated by sleep deprivation (SD). Twenty healthy human participants were asked to detect a target house in serially presented house pictures that appeared at 1-15images/s. Temporal response profiles relating fMRI signal magnitude to presentation frequency were derived from task-responsive regions. Following SD, the inverted U-shaped response profile within parahippocampal place area was lower and peaked at a slower presentation rate than when participants slept

From Smoking-Permitted to Smokefree Prisons: A 3-Year Evaluation of the Changes in Occupational Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke Across a National Prison System.

OBJECTIVES: Prisons in Scotland were one of the few workplaces exempt from the 2006 comprehensive smoking ban in indoor public places, excluding the prison workforce from the health benefits of smokefree workplaces. The November 2018 introduction of comprehensive restrictions on smoking in Scottish prisons aimed to protect prison staff and people in custody from the harmful impacts of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure. This study presents SHS exposure data gathered after smokefree policy implementation and compares these with data gathered during and before policy development. METHODS: Dylos D

Delaying feedback compensates for impaired reinforcement learning in developmental dyslexia.

A theoretical framework suggests that developmental dyslexia is characterized by abnormalities in brain structures underlying the procedural learning and memory systems while the declarative learning and memory systems are presumed to remain intact or even enhanced (Procedural Deficit Hypothesis). This notion has been supported by a substantial body of research, which focused on each system independently. However, less attention has been paid to interactions between these memory systems which may provide insights as to learning situations and conditions in which learning in dyslexia can be imp

Force illusions and drifts observed during muscle vibration.

We explored predictions of a scheme that views position and force perception as a result of measuring proprioceptive signals within a reference frame set by ongoing efferent process. In particular, this hypothesis predicts force illusions caused by muscle vibration and mediated via changes in both afferent and efferent components of kinesthesia. Healthy subjects performed accurate steady force production tasks by pressing with the four fingers of one hand (the task hand) on individual force sensors with and without visual feedback. At various times during the trials, subjects matched the perce

Social brain networks: Resting-state and task-based connectivity in youth with and without epilepsy.

Individuals with epilepsy often experience social difficulties and deficits in social cognition. It remains unknown how disruptions to neural networks underlying such skills may contribute to this clinical phenotype. The current study compared the organization of relevant brain circuits-the "mentalizing network" and a salience-related network centered on the amygdala-in youth with and without epilepsy. Functional connectivity between the nodes of these networks was assessed, both at rest and during engagement in a social cognitive task (facial emotion recognition), using functional magnetic re

Mechanisms of cross-modal plasticity in early-blind subjects.

A variety of studies have demonstrated enhanced blood oxygenation level dependent responses to auditory and tactile stimuli within occipital cortex as a result of early blindness. However, little is known about the organizational principles that drive this cross-modal plasticity. We compared BOLD responses to a wide variety of auditory and tactile tasks (vs. rest) in early-blind and sighted subjects. As expected, cross-modal responses were larger in blind than in sighted subjects in occipital cortex for all tasks (cross-modal plasticity). Within both blind and sighted subject groups, we found

Impaired pre-saccadic shifts of attention in neglect patients.

Every saccade is generally preceded by a mandatory shift of attention to the saccade endpoint, allowing us to process visual information more effectively. Whether this 'pre-saccadic shift of attention' is still intact in hemispatial neglect is unknown. Whereas neglect patients exhibit lateralized impairments of attention and often show impaired saccadic behaviour, it is not yet clear how the pre-saccadic shift of attention is affected during accurately executed eye movements. In this study, we used a gaze contingent visual discrimination task, in which neglect patients had to discriminate a pr

Covert unimanual response preparation triggers attention shifts to effectors rather than goal locations.

The premotor theory of attention postulates that during response preparation, attention shifts are elicited towards the goal of a prepared movement. Support for this claim comes from research demonstrating enhanced performance at the location of upcoming saccades. To investigate whether attention shifts occur towards effectors or goal locations during the covert preparation of unimanual movements, we recorded event related brain potentials (ERPs) to task-irrelevant tactile probes that were presented while participants prepared to move one hand towards the index finger of the other hand, as dir

Processing of intentional and automatic number magnitudes in children born prematurely: evidence from fMRI.

This study examined the neural correlates of intentional and automatic number processing (indexed by number comparison and physical Stroop task, respectively) in 6- and 7-year-old children born prematurely. Behavioral results revealed significant numerical distance and size congruity effects. Imaging results disclosed (1) largely overlapping fronto-parietal activation for intentional and automatic number processing, (2) a frontal to parietal shift of activation upon considering the risk factors gestational age and birth weight, and (3) a task-specific link between math proficiency and function

Inverse Dynamics Meets Markerless Motion Capture during Standing: Concurrent Validation of Center of Mass and Center of Pressure Estimations.

INTRODUCTION: Observational balance assessment is frequently used clinically but remains subjective and limited in accuracy. Although laboratory-based methods provide precise biomechanical measurements, their need for specialized equipment and expertise limits clinical use. This study presents a multi-view, open-source markerless motion capture system (MMCS) using OpenPose to identify body landmarks, enabling objective balance assessment via center-of-mass (COM) and inverse-dynamics-based center-of-pressure (COP) estimation. METHODS: The proposed MMCS was experimentally validated. Twelve non-

Bridging the Pathology Domain Gap: Efficiently Adapting CLIP for Pathology Image Analysis with Limited Labeled Data.

Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) has shown its proficiency in acquiring distinctive visual representations and exhibiting strong generalization across diverse vision tasks. However, its effectiveness in pathology image analysis, particularly with limited labeled data, remains an ongoing area of investigation due to challenges associated with significant domain shifts and catastrophic forgetting. Thus, it is imperative to devise efficient adaptation strategies in this domain to enable scalable analysis. In this study, we introduce Path-CLIP, a framework tailored for a swift adapta

Attentional processes, not implicit mentalizing, mediate performance in a perspective-taking task: Evidence from stimulation of the temporoparietal junction.

Mentalizing is a fundamental process underpinning human social interaction. Claims of the existence of 'implicit mentalizing' represent a fundamental shift in our understanding of this important skill, suggesting that preverbal infants and even animals may be capable of mentalizing. One of the most influential tasks supporting such claims in adults is the dot perspective-taking task, but demonstrations of similar performance on this task for mentalistic and non-mentalistic stimuli have led to the suggestion that this task in fact measures domain-general processes, rather than implicit mentaliz

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on non-veridical decision making.

We test the emerging hypothesis that prefrontal cortical mechanisms involved in non-veridical decision making do not overlap with those of veridical decision making. Healthy female subjects performed an experimental task assessing free choice, agent-centered decision making (The Cognitive Bias Task) and a veridical control task related to visuospatial working memory (the Moving Spot Task). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using 1 Hz and 10 Hz (intermittent) rTMS and sham protocols. Both 1 Hz and 10 Hz stimulation o

The effects of task duration on psychophysically-determined maximum acceptable weights and forces.

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate maximum acceptable weights and forces when performing manual handling tasks continuously for four hours at frequencies of 4.3 min-1 or slower. Twelve female and ten male second shift industrial workers performed 18 varieties of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying. A psychophysical methodology was employed, whereby the subjects were asked to select a workload they could sustain for 8 h 'without straining themselves or without becoming unusually tired, weakened, overheated or out of breath'. Measurements of heart rate, oxygen consum
