Strategies to Achieve Nontattooed Flap Transfer Where Decorative Tattoos Are Found at Workhorse Donor Sites.

BACKGROUND: Tattooing in the general population has become increasingly popular in recent years. Tattoo ink may contain carcinogenic chemicals, and long-term health risks remain a concern. When any proposed surgical intervention violates a tattooed area, such as where a tattoo is located in a planned donor site of a workhorse flap, the physical, cosmetic, and psychological effects of both recipient and donor sites on a patient must always be considered. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to develop alternative options for microsurgeons when faced with planned donor sites for workhors…

Skin biopsy PCR enables rapid diagnosis of tattoo-associated staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but potentially fatal toxin-mediated disease. Early diagnosis is challenging because blood cultures are frequently negative and clinical manifestations may initially be nonspecific. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old man presented with fever, diarrhoea, hypotension, and purpuric lesions localized to a calf tattoo performed three days earlier. Laboratory investigations revealed systemic inflammation, acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia, and hepatic dysfunction. Despite negative blood cultures and cerebrospinal fluid analyses, the

Does tattoo exposure increase the risk of cutaneous melanoma? A population-based case-control study.

The incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM) has risen sharply over the past 30 years, coinciding with the rapidly growing tattoo trend. In Sweden, 20% of the population is tattooed. Repeated reports of the presence of carcinogenic chemicals, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic amines and heavy metals in tattoo ink justifies the investigation of CM risk in relation to tattooing. We aimed to investigate the potential association between tattoo exposure and CM. We identified 2880 individuals who were diagnosed with CM at age 20-60 years, in the Swedish National Cancer Register. For each case…

Tarnish tattoos: localized cutaneous argyria from sterling silver in fresh piercings. A case series.

Tarnish tattoo is a form of localized cutaneous argyria resulting from the deposition of silver into the skin following exposure to silver jewellery in fresh piercings. This report presents the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of four female patients with tarnish tattoos on the nose and ear from wearing silver jewellery. All four patients wore silver studs or rings immediately following the piercing. Two of the four patients underwent treatment with nanosecond Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser and Q-switched alexandrite 755-nm lasers, with minimal improvement. Tarnish tattoos are

Aborted sudden cardiac death in patient with concealed Brugada syndrome early after skin tattoo.

We report a case of 40‑year-old healthy patient presented with aborted sudden cardiac death. Echocardiography and coronarography were normal. ECG showed minimal non-specific changes in right precordial leads. A concealed Brugada syndrome was considered. We performed a provocative ajmaline test with Brugada‑specific lead placement in 2nd, 3rd and 4th intercostal spaces at both parasternal sides. The test has confirmed the supposed diagnose. Detailed history taking revealed that the patient underwent a calf tattoo procedure on the same day. In this case report, we describe a new mechanism in Bru

Tattoo-Associated Sarcoidosis With Severe Uveitis Successfully Treated With Mycophenolate Mofetil: A Report of Two Cases.

Tattooing is an increasing trend among Western countries, with about 18% of the population undergoing the procedure once in their lifetime. The process looks simple; introduce exogenous pigment into the dermis layer of the skin, altering the skin color permanently. However, this simple procedure leads to several health issues and medical complications, both acute and chronic, and some are difficult to cure. Sarcoidosis is high on the list of severity involving almost all body organs. Multiple organ involvement makes this condition more difficult to treat. Lungs and lymphatics are the leading s…

A novel dual-wavelength, Nd:YAG, picosecond-domain laser safely and effectively removes multicolor tattoos.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although nanosecond-domain lasers have been the mainstay of laser tattoo removal for decades, recent disruptive innovations in laser design have introduced a new class of commercial Q-switched lasers that generate picosecond-domain pulses. STUDY: A picosecond-domain, Nd:YAG laser with a KTP frequency-doubling crystal was used to treat 31 decorative tattoos in 21 subjects. Safety and effectiveness were determined by blinded evaluation of digital images in this prospective clinical study. RESULTS: The average clearance overall as evaluated by blinded observers evalua

Q-switched ruby laser treatment of tattoos and benign pigmented skin lesions: a critical review.

The Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, 25-40 nsec) is an effective and safe therapeutic device for the treatment of tattoos and well-defined, benign, pigmented epidermal and dermal lesions. Because of its selective mode of action, dermal pigments of natural and artificial origin are destroyed photothermically and removed without scar. This method is exceptionally suited for the elimination of lay and professional tattoos, traumatic tattoos, and permanent makeup. Other frequent indications include benign pigmented lesions such as lentigines, freckles, café-au-lait spots, seborrheic keratosis, and B

Combined interface tattooing and fibrin glue-assisted sutureless corneal resurfacing with donor lenticule obtained from small-incision lenticule extraction for limbal dermoid.

We describe a technique of small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE)-assisted sutureless corneal resurfacing with interface tattooing for superficial limbal dermoids. After excision at a plane minimally below surrounding normal cornea and sclera, a corneal tattoo powder is carefully applied within an inked circular outline of the intended corneal margin. Circularity and cosmesis are assessed in natural light with the microscope light off. Fibrin glue-assisted corneal resurfacing is performed with the lenticule. The conjunctiva is closed with glue. The technique was performed in 3 patients, w…

The onset of sarcoidosis in relation to tattoos: Focus on the treatment landscape. A critical literature review and case report.

Sarcoidosis is a complex multisystem granulomatous disease characterized by the formation of non-caseating granulomas in affected tissues, primarily involving the lungs and the lymphatic system. While its precise etiology remains elusive, a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and immune dysregulation is believed to contribute to disease development. In recent years, an intriguing association has emerged between cutaneous sarcoidosis and tattooing. Several case reports and observational studies have documented instances where sarcoid granulomas develop within tattooed …

A Strategy for Integrating Aesthetic Tattoos for Scar Camouflage Into a Burn and Trauma Scar Service: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic tattooing is widely used for decorative purposes, and medical tattooing is established in reconstructive practice. However, decorative tattooing remains an underrecognized option for scar camouflage in burn and trauma patients, with limited clinical guidance regarding patient selection and integration into scar services. METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of patients treated at a tertiary burns center between 2021 and 2024 who underwent aesthetic tattooing for scar camouflage. Clinical records were reviewed for scar characteristics, prior scar treatments, c…

Dosimetric evaluation of surface-guided tattoo-free approach for right sided whole-breast irradiation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In preparation for adjuvant breast radiation therapy (RT), permanent skin tattoo marks are often placed on the patient's skin to assist patient positioning on the treatment couch. However, those marks are often undesirable, in particular, for breast cancer patients due to various cosmetic and psychological concerns and other drawbacks. With surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) being readily available, it becomes possible to adopt a "tattoo-free" approach for patient setup. This study evaluates the efficacy and dosimetric implications of a tattoo-free setup technique.

Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Skin Infections Associated With One Tattoo Studio-Oregon, January-April 2023.

Surgical, cosmetic, and tattooing procedures can lead to nontuberculous mycobacterium skin and soft tissue infections. Eight Oregonians developed Mycobacterium immunogenum infections after receiving tattoos from the same artist. Tattoo ink was likely contaminated by self-prepared diluent. Nontuberculous mycobacteria reportability and surveillance are essential to identify outbreaks amenable to public health intervention.

Elastofibromatous changes in giant cell fibroma and amalgam tattoo: Unusual findings in common oral lesions.

Several cases of elastofibromatous lesion affecting the oral mucosa have been reported. Clinically, these lesions may appear as small exophytic lesions or less often as white lesions. Therefore, fibrous hyperplasia and leukoplakia are not uncommonly considered in clinical differential diagnosis. Microscopically, elastic and fibrous connective tissue deposition is seen. Rarely, elastofibromatous changes can be detected when assessing intraoral lesions, including cysts, salivary gland neoplasms, and epithelial dysplasia. Here we report two oral lesions showing elastofibromatous changes, expandin
